No full textAlternative financial services help refugees overcome personal and economic barriers when seeking a new life in camps, self-contained communities, and urban settings. In refugee camps such as in Badbaado, Mogadishu (Somalia) and near Elliniko, Greece, RoSCAs (rotating savings and credit associations), savings groups, microfinance programs, and hawalas (for remittances) facilitate personal and entrepreneurial transactions. These alternative banking activities, along with more formal financial services, are also used in refugee communities such as Clarkston, Georgia. Mobile banking technology, including smartphone apps and FinTech, is also reducing the financial barriers of refugees
The Evaluation and Importance of Emergency Responses for Syrian Refugee Children
No full textSyria has been undergoing a most brutal humanitarian crisis since 2011. This crisis has raised serious concerns about the rights and treatment of refugees, children especially. The legitimate national security concerns of affected states have prevented many refugees from receiving adequate support. This research frames the Syrian refugee crisis as a human security issue – not a national security issue. Through this alternative lens, the research also asks what can be done further to ensure the security and well being of every refugee child in this crisis and maps a human security-based model for global responses to future crises

Not All Part-Set Cues Are Created Equally
No full textThe present study manipulated the presence/absence of part-set cues, as well as the memorability of those cues (high vs. low, based on a previous study) and the type of test (free recall vs. ordered recall). Participants either read three short paragraphs (Exp 1) or three word lists (Exp 2). Test type was manipulated between-subjects, whereas cue type (uncued, high-mem-cued, low-mem-cued) was a within-subjects factor. When the data were scored using a lenient (free recall) criterion, part-set cueing inhibition occurred only when high memorability cues were presented. In contrast, the presence of low memorability cues at test eliminated part-set cueing inhibition
Exploratory synthesis of new iron solid state materials
No full textIonic liquids, as green and reusable solvents, have been widely used in the chemistry of the pharmaceutical, energy, and surfactant industries. In this project, they are used to understand the full range of synthetic parameters that produce two different, recently discovered iron-containing compounds. Phosphorous-heavy ratios seem to favor formation of the [FeP7S17]– anion. Other ratios push the reaction in favor of the [Fe(P2S8)2]2– anion. Current work is focused on exclusive use of the ionic liquid with [BF4]– to see if it may yield additional new compounds

Internet sentiment extraction firms provide information on internet users’ dispositions towards a variety of factors. In the financial industry, investment firms are paying up to $15 000 for sentiment data per security in order to produce more profitable investment strategies. Our trading algorithm (programmed and tested on the cloud-sourced hedge fund Quantopian ) utilizes sentiment data from Twitter as a means of measuring the efficacy of an internet sentiment analysis strategy in stock trading.
