    Carrier transport properties of nanocrystalline Er3N@C80

    Electrical transport properties of the nanocrystalline Er3N@C80 with fcc crystal structure were characterized by measuring both temperature-dependent d.c. conductance and a.c. impedance. The results showed that the Er3N@C80 sample has characteristics of n-type semiconductor and an electron affinity larger than work function of gold metal. The Er3N@C80/Au interface has an ohmic contact behavior and the contact resistance was very small as compared with bulk resistance of the Er3N@C80 sample. The charge carriers in the sample were thermally excited from various trapped levels and both acoustic phonon and ionic scatterings become a dominant process in different temperature regions, respectively. At temperatures below 250 K, the activation energy of the trapped carrier was estimated to be 35.5 meV, and the ionic scattering was a dominant mechanism. On the other hand, at temperatures above 350 K, the activation energy was reduced to 15.9 meV, and the acoustic phonon scattering was a dominant mechanism. In addition, a polarization effect from the charge carrier was observed at low frequencies below 2.0 MHz, and the relative intrinsic permittivity of the Er3N@C80 nanocrystalline lattice was estimated to be 4.6 at frequency of 5.0 MHz

    Relationship Between Output of a Fluxgate Sensor and Magnetization Process of Its Core

    Motivated by the need to miniaturize fluxgate sensors, we investigated the dependence of the sensitivity of fluxgate sensors on the saturation flux density and magnetostriction of an amorphous ribbon core. In addition, the relationship between the sensing properties and the magnetization process of its core was investigated with a Kerr microscope. We found that the sensitivity decreased with an increase in magnetostriction. Highly magnetostrictive amorphous ribbons exhibited maze domains that were difficult to move by applying a low magnetic field of a few hundred amperes per meter. This effect caused a decrease in the sensitivity of the sensors

    Colored noise-induced threshold shifts and phase diagrams in electroconvections

    We report noise-induced threshold shifts and phase diagrams in electroconvections (ECs) in a nematic liquid crystal by controlling the frequency band (i.e., cutoff frequency fc) of noise. A crucial relationship between the internal characteristic time (i.e., charge relaxation time ¸·) of the EC system and the correlation time [¸N = 1/(2³fc)] of the external colored noise is found, which determines the role of noise in the nonequilibrium EC system. Modified numerical results using the relationship are quantitatively compared with the present experimental results. From the relationship, two types of phase diagrams can be classified in white-like and colored noises

    Effects of organic polymer addition in magnetite synthesis on its crystalline structure

    Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and magnetite-based inorganic–organic hybrids are attracting attention in biomedical fields as thermoseeds for hyperthermia and a contrast medium in magnetic resonance imaging. Size control of Fe3O4 thermoseeds is important as the particle size affects the heat generation properties. Fe3O4 can be easily synthesized via aqueous processes and the presence of organic substances during synthesis can affect the size and crystalline phase of the Fe3O4 formed. In this study, various polymers with different functional groups and surface charges were added to the precursor solution of Fe3O4 to clarify the relationship between the chemical structure of the organic substances and the crystal structure of Fe3O4. At first, coexistence effects of the organic substances in the solutions were clarified. As a result, crystalline Fe3O4 was precipitated even after addition of neutral polyethylene glycol and cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride). The poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate) addition significantly decreased the particle size, while polyacrylic acid addition inhibited Fe3O4 nucleation to afford an amorphous phase. These differences were related to the ease of complex formation from iron ions and coexisting organic polymers. In order to clarify this assumption, a modified experimental procedure was applied for the polyacrylic acid. Namely, the iron oxide precipitation by the NaOH solution was followed by the polyacrylic acid addition. Notably, Fe3O4 nucleation was not inhibited. Hence, the size and crystalline phase of the iron oxide prepared by the aqueous process were drastically affected by organic polymers

    Hyperthermia has been suggested as a novel, minimally invasive cancer treatment method. After implantation of magnetic nano- or microparticles around a tumour through blood vessels, irradiation with alternating magnetic fields facilitates the efficient in situ hyperthermia even for deep-seated tumours. On the basis of this idea, if the microspheres are capable of delivering drugs, they could be promising multifunctional biomaterials effective for chemotherapy as well as hyperthermia. In the present study, magnetite microspheres were prepared by aggregation of the iron oxide colloid in water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. The release behaviour of alendronate, a typical bisphosphonate, from the microspheres was examined in vitro as a model of the bone tumour prevention and treatment system. The alendronate was successfully incorporated onto the porous magnetite microspheres in vacuum conditions. The drug-loaded microspheres maintained their original spherical shapes even after shaking in ultrapure water for 3 days, suggesting that they have sufficient mechanical integrity for clinical use. It was attributed to high aggregation capability of the magnetite nanoparticles through van der Waals and weak magnetic attractions. The microspheres showed slow release of the alendronate in vitro, resulting from tight covalent or ionic interaction between the magnetite and the alendronate. The release rate was diffusion-controlled type and well controlled by the alendronate concentration in drug incorporation to the microspheres
