Approximate Dual Controller by Information Matrix Maximization for Self-Sensing Electromagnetic Suspension System
The 10th International Symposium on Linear Drives for Industry Applications (LDIA 2015), Aachen, Germany, on July 27-29 2015This paper presents a design methodology to apply the approximate dual controller using the information matrix maximization for self-sensing electromagnetic suspension systems, in which the gap estimate is given based on the speed electromotive force. The system is an unstable non-minimum phase system, and we employ the dual control system. Simulations are presented to show that the dual control system follows with the reference while the electromagnet is excited to establish its quality identification for self-sensing electromagnetic levitation system

Concluding remarks and suggestions for future researchActivated sludge system is widely used in treating wastewater. However, this system creates a lot of waste activated sludge (WAS). The abundance of WAS creates serious problem to municipalities and industries in term of treatment cost and waste management. Hence, the purpose of my Ph. D. study is to seek an appropriate means for WAS management. Here, four approaches for utilizing WAS effectively are investigated; 1) WAS reduction at low temperature by using low temperature tolerant bacteria, 2) biohydrogen production from WAS and oil palm frond (OPF) juice by engineered Escherichia coli strain, 3) CO2 sequestration using microbes present in WAS, and 4) methane energy production from seawater by microbes in WAS. As a result, 1) WAS reduction at a low temperature was improved by Pseudomonas sp. VNT and Aeromonas sp. VNT which were isolated from WAS itself under a low temperature, 2) WAS was found as an effective substrate as well as an additional nutrient source when added to oil palm frond (OPF) juice for elevated biohydrogen production by an engineered Escherichia coli strain, 3) enrichment of WAS, by which active methanogen was dominated, showed great potential to sequester atmospheric CO2 for methane production, and 4) active methanogens in WAS shows the potential to use carbonate sources in seawater as well as to tolerate high salinity of seawater during methane production.
Taken together, the findings in this study are indeed important as a means for effectively utilizing WAS which burdens the environment and to solve the high treatment cost of WAS. Throughout this study, the volume of WAS can be controlled by a practical way using bioremediation and bioenergy production

Detecting a Taxi from a Video for Visually Handicapped People
The 34th Chinese Control Conference and SICE Annual Conference 2015, July 28-30, 2015, Hangzhou, ChinaThis paper proposes a method of detecting a specific moving object, a taxi in particular, on a road from a video provided from a camera attached to a user. In order to raise the quality of life of visually handicapped people, a computer vision system which works in place of their eyes and a brain may be useful. As one of such systems, this study focuses its attention on finding a taxi on a road which is a convenient vehicle to such people as a means of transfer outdoors. The novel idea of this study is that a camera and a PC system for finding a taxi is carried by a user, a visually handicapped person, for example. The proposed method employs the HOG features to represent a vehicle, and finds a taxi by Real AdaBoost and color information with the detected vehicle. The performance of the proposed method is shown experimentally

In this study, in order to analyze duties of the
nurses, we performed experiments to collect the duties
activity data of the nurses for a long term. We
set 38 nurses as subjects and asked them to carry out
duties while attaching a wearable small sensor device,
and collected the acceleration data, meeting information
between nurses and the nurse duties information.
In addition, we collected the location information of the nurses by using infrared information and communication equipment at the same time. From various data collected, we analyzed intensity and positional information of duties activity of the nurse, meeting information and the duties information between nurses and considered the influence that each factor affected to the nurse. As the result, we found that intensity of the activity increases in such nurses as who has many times of meeting with other nurses, visits the patient room many times, or who works on jobs concerning with the assistance of the patients such as rehabilitation assistance duties or the activity assistance dutie
Human action representation and recognition: An approach to histogram od spatiotemporal templates
The motion sequences of human actions have its own discriminating profile that can be represented as a spatiotemporal template like Motion History Image (MHI). A histogram is a popular statistic to present the underlying information in a template. In this paper a histogram oriented action recognition method is presented. In the proposed method, we use the Directional Motion History Images (DMHI), their corresponding Local Binary Pattern (LBP) images and the Motion Energy Image (MEI) as spatiotemporal template. The intensity histogram is then extracted from those images which are concatenated together to form the feature vector for action representation. A linear combination of the histograms taken from DMHIs and LBP images is used in the experiment. We evaluated the performance of the proposed method along with some variants of it using the renowned KTH action dataset and found higher accuracies. The obtained results justify the superiority of the proposed method compared to other approaches for action recognition found in literature

Concluding remarks and suggestions for future researchThe growing interest in bioenergy and particularly in second generation bioethanol (SGB) is a great challenge as the development of lignocellulose-related technologies are not very well established in the world. Another major constraint is the relatively higher cost of SGB, both in terms of investment costs and final energy costs. This causes the commercialization of research findings on SGB faces stiff competition from fossil fuels. Hence, this study was aimed to produce SGB but using a straight forward technology of first generation bioethanol from sugarcane juice. A newly identified lignocellulosic material having such characteristics is the fresh oil palm frond (OPF). OPF is the largest biomass source in the palm oil industry contributing 61% of total biomass. Fresh OPF juice can be readily obtained by just pressing the fresh OPF petiole, similar to sugarcane juice. In the first chapter, a literature studies was carried out to understand the gap in the research for liquid non-food feedstocks as fermentation medium for bioethanol production, particularly in the treatment and storage of the feedstock.
In the second chapter, the potential of fresh OPF juice as a complete non-food medium for direct bioethanol production was evaluated. OPF juice contained sugars and other nutrients such as nitrogen, magnesium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus and sulphur, making it a potential medium for bioethanol fermentation. A promising yield of 0.38 g bioethanol per g sugars consumed was obtained after 24 hours of fermentation of fresh OPF juice without nutrient supplementation and without pH correction, which is comparable to synthetic medium as well as the bioethanol yield from sugarcane juice in the Brazilian bioethanol industry (0.40 g/g). Therefore, this study provides an opportunity for the use of fresh OPF juice as a new renewable, non-food and non-cellulosic feedstock for the bioethanol industry.
The major challenge of using liquid feedstock as a fermentation medium is rapid degradation of sugars during storage. Therefore in the third chapter, the effect of OPF juice concentration and mild temperature storage on glucose content were discussed. The OPF juice was concentrated by evaporation of 30-70% (v/v) of water and stored at different temperatures (30-60°C) for 20 days. Regardless of OPF juice concentration, glucose content was declined rapidly (C/C. = 80%) at 30 and 40°C, while it remained stable at 50 and 60°C. Despite the high concentration of OPF juice (70%) did not significantly reduced the aw (0.93), the microbial spoilage in the OPF juice was inhibited when stored at 50°C and 60°C. Consequently, considering the minimum size of storage container, 50% concentrated OPF juice and 50°C storage was the alternative treatment condition of OPF juice prior to fermentation.
In order to determine the feasibility of bioethanol production from OPF at industrial scale, the fourth chapter discuss the potential of developing a new approach of integrating a biorefinery plant for bioethanol production to an existing palm oil mill (POM). The concept proposed the production of fermentable sugars from OPF at six neighbouring POMs before being transported to the nearest biorefinery plant for bioethanol production which is located at one of the POMs. The production cost of fermentable sugars was estimated at 0.46 per litre is similar to production cost of corn bioethanol and cheaper than the current SGB cost. This finding suggests that an integrated approach is the most economically feasible option to commercialize bioethanol production in the near future, provided that the government make a move towards the commercialization by introducing a policy on SGB
Magnetic Properties of Hagi Ware
Hagi ware originally consists of a mixture of two raw materials: Daido clay and Mishima clay. During its firing process, we observed a change in the magnetic properties of the iron oxide, Fe2O3. The magnetic moment of the Daido clay (which only contains a small amount of the Fe2O3 γ-phase) attains a maximum at a firing temperature of approximately 600°C, where a minor amount of the poorly crystallized Fe2O3 temporarily changes to the ferromagnetic γ-phase. Furthermore, the magnetic moment of the Mishima clay (which contains a large amount of the Fe2O3 γ-phase) decreases as the firing temperature increases, whereas the coercive field rapidly increases at firing temperatures above 1000°C. The magnetization curve of the Mishima clay that was fired at temperatures above 1200°C is characteristic of a two-component system consisting of a minor γ-phase and a major α-phase. The above-mentioned phenomena were also confirmed by XRD analyses. A series of experiments indicated that the firing of Hagi ware can be characterized as a transformation from the γ-phase of Fe2O3 to the α-phase of Fe2O3. This transformation is considered to contribute to the change from soft magnetism to hard magnetism of Hagi ware
