Biomineralization Behavior of a Vinylphosphonic acid-based Copolymer Added with Polymerization Accelerator in Simulated Body Fluid
Apatite-polymer composites have been evaluated in terms of its potential application as bone substitutes. Biomimetic processes using simulated body fluid (SBF) are well-known methods for preparation of such composites. They are reliant on specific functional groups to induce the heterogeneous apatite nucleation and phosphate groups possess good apatite-forming ability in SBF. Improving the degree of polymerization is important for obtaining phosphate-containing polymers, because the release of significant quantities of monomer or low molecular weight polymers can lead to suppression of the apatite formation. To date, there have been very few studies pertaining to the effect of adding a polymerization accelerator to the polymerization reaction involved in the formation of these composite materials under physiological conditions. In this study, we have prepared a copolymer from triethylene glycol dimethacrylate and vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) in the presence of different amounts of sodium p-toluenesulfinate (p-TSS) as a polymerization accelerator. The effects of p-TSS on the chemical durability and apatite formation of the copolymers were investigated in SBF. The addition of 0.1–1.0 wt% of p-TSS was effective for suppressing the dissolution of the copolymers in SBF, whereas larger amount had a detrimental effect. A calcium polyvinylphosphate instead of the apatite was precipitated in SBF
Evaluation of trapped magnetic field properties in superconducting MgB2 bulk magnets by finite element method
Proceedings of the 27th International Symposium on Superconductivity (ISS 2014) November 25-27, 2014, Tokyo, JapanThe trapped magnetic field properties in superconducting MgB2 bulk magnets with various kinds of shape such as a disk, a ring and a pair of disks were calculated by the finite element method (FEM). For simplicity, field cool magnetization was replaced by a simple magnetization process at constant temperature to obtain equivalent distribution of magnetic field, and the thermal equation in FEM was omitted. It was confirmed that the result of FEM agreed well with the result by analytical method in infinite long cylinder. We compared the trapped magnetic field property between FEM result and experimental result in reference in order to research the simple evaluation method of the trapped magnetic field of MgB2 bulk magnet. It was found that the result of FEM agreed with the experimental result and it can explain the distribution of trapped magnetic field of superconducting MgB2 bulk magnet. From these results, it was found that it was possible to be calculated in various kinds of shape with using simple evaluation by FEM. Therefore, the optimization of the maximum trapped magnetic field in superconducting MgB2 bulk magnet can be discussed

In vitro apatite formation and drug loading/release of porous TiO2 microspheres prepared by sol-gel processing with different SiO2 nanoparticle contents
Bioactive titania (TiO2) microparticles can be used as drug-releasing cement fillers for the chemotherapeutic treatment of metastatic bone tumors. Porous anatase-type TiO2 microspheres around 15 μm in diameter were obtained through a sol–gel process involving a water-in-oil emulsion with 30:70 SiO2/H2O weight ratio and subsequent NaOH solution treatment. The water phase consisted of methanol, titanium tetraisopropoxide, diethanolamine, SiO2 nanoparticles, and H2O, while the oil phase consisted of kerosene, Span 80, and Span 60. The resulting microspheres had a high specific surface area of 111.7 m2·g− 1. Apatite with a network-like surface structure formed on the surface of the microspheres within 8 days in simulated body fluid. The good apatite-forming ability of the microspheres is attributed to their porous structure and the negative zeta potential of TiO2. The release of rhodamine B, a model for a hydrophilic drug, was rapid for the first 6 h of soaking, but diffusion-controlled thereafter. The burst release in the first 6 h is problematic for clinical applications; nonetheless, the present results highlight the potential of porous TiO2 microspheres as drug-releasing cement fillers able to form apatite
