Fatigue strength evaluation for bolt-nut connections having slight pitch difference considering incomplete threads of nut
Proceedings of 4th International Conference on Fracture Fatigue and Wear, FFW 2015, Ghent University, Belgium, 27-28 August 2015The high strength bolts and nuts are widely used in various fields. In this study the effect of slight
pitch difference is considered when the nut pitch is αμm larger than the bolt pitch. In the first place, the fatigue experiment is conducted with varying pitch difference. The results show that the fatigue life is
extended to about 1.5 times by introducing the suitable pitch difference under the high stress amplitude.
Next, the detail observation is performed on the fractured specimens including the fractured positions and
the crack configurations. It is found that the fractured positions and the crack distributions vary depending on the pitch difference. Finally, to clarify the improvement mechanism of the fatigue strength, the finite element method is applied to calculate the stress amplitude and mean stress at each bolt threads, and the
incomplete threads at the nut ends are also considered to obtain the accurate analytical results
Molecular dynamics study on condensation/evaporation coefficients of chain molecules at liquid-vapor interface
The structure and thermodynamic properties of the liquid–vapor interface are of fundamental interest for numerous technological implications. For simple molecules, e.g., argon and water, the molecular condensation/evaporation behavior depends strongly on their translational motion and the system temperature. Existing molecular dynamics (MD) results are consistent with the theoretical predictions based on the assumption that the liquid and vapor states in the vicinity of the liquid–vapor interface are isotropic. Additionally, similar molecular condensation/evaporation characteristics have been found for long-chain molecules, e.g., dodecane. It is unclear, however, whether the isotropic assumption is valid and whether the molecular orientation or the chain length of the molecules affects the condensation/evaporation behavior at the liquid–vapor interface. In this study, MD simulations were performed
to study the molecular condensation/evaporation behavior of the straight-chain alkanes, i.e., butane,
octane, and dodecane, at the liquid–vapor interface, and the effects of the molecular orientation
and chain length were investigated in equilibrium systems. The results showed that the condensation/evaporation behavior of chain molecules primarily depends on the molecular translational energy
and the surface temperature and is independent of the molecular chain length. Furthermore, the orientation at the liquid–vapor interface was disordered when the surface temperature was sufficiently
higher than the triple point and had no significant effect on the molecular condensation/evaporation behavior. The validity of the isotropic assumption was confirmed, and we conclude that the condensation/evaporation coefficients can be predicted by the liquid-to-vapor translational length ratio, even for chain molecules
On the Nonlinear Stabilization Problem via Quadratic Immersion Part I: Sigma/Pi-systems and biased solutions of driver-type systems.
Based on our recently issued paper on Quadratic Immersion (QI), (also said 'exact quadratization') for nonlinear control systems, the present work aims to define the main features of a possible new approach in nonlinear control, able to exploit the structural properties of a quadratized system in order to design global, statefeedback-
regulators, with an exponential, and tunable, performance, for a meaningful class of nonlinear systems. The paper is divided into two parts. In the Part I we go through the
properties of QI and explore the possibility of writing explicitly the solution for the class of the, so called, Sigma/Pi-systems. The main result consists in showing that, under certain conditions, Sigma/Pi-systems are always forward complete, and the solution can be calculated at the steady-state

A Study on the Attitude of the Small Municipalities toward the Necessity of City Master Plan - Based on a Questionnaire survey in Kyushu Region -
This paper analyzes the attitudes of the municipalities toward the city master plan. It firstly overlooks the relation between the institution of the city master plan and the population, the scale of the city planning area, etc., in Kyushu region. Then, it conducted a questionnaire survey over the municipalities without the plans, to analyze their attitudes toward the plan. The major findings are, for the small municipalities, 1) the priority and necessity of the city master plan is not high and such municipalities do not have obstacles to conduct city planning project, 2) the revision of the city planning projects and the municipal mergers may become the important opportunity of the plan institution, 3) the role of the city master plan should be reconsidered for such municipalities
Probabilistic Prediction in Multiclass Classification Derived for Flexible Text-Prompted Speaker Verification
22nd International Conference, ICONIP 2015, Istanbul, Turkey, November 9-12, 2015So far, we have presented amethod for text-promptedmultistep speaker verification using GEBI (Gibbs-distribution based extended Bayesian inference) for reducing single-step verification error, where we use thresholds for acceptance and rejection but the tuning is not so easy and affects the performance of verification. To solve the problem of thresholds, this paper presents a method of probabilistic prediction in multiclass classification for solving verification problem. We also present loss functions for evaluating the performance of probabilistic prediction. By means of numerical experiments using recorded real speech data, we examine the properties of the present method using GEBI and BI (Bayesian inverence) and show the effectiveness and the risk of probability loss in the present method
