The Battle of Belleau Wood: The United States Marine Corps and Mythmaking in World War I
This study examines the experiences of the United States Marine Corps during the First World War, with particular attention to how the Corps adapted to the demands of a global conflict. Drawing on government records, military correspondence, and contemporaneous accounts, the project analyzes the organizational, operational, and cultural challenges that shaped Marine Corps identity and performance. The research highlights the Corps’ role on both the Western Front and the American home front, situating Marine operations within the broader framework of U.S. military mobilization.
The paper investigates how training practices, institutional traditions, and evolving combat requirements intersected during the war years. It also explores the ways in which the Marine Corps sought to preserve its distinctive esprit de corps amid the pressures of expansion and integration into joint operations with other branches of the armed services. By focusing on the Marine Corps as both a fighting force and an institution, this study underscores the dual significance of battlefield performance and organizational adaptation.
Ultimately, the analysis contributes to scholarship on military institutions by demonstrating how the Marine Corps negotiated continuity and change during one of the most transformative periods in American military history. In doing so, it situates the Corps’ World War I experience within larger narratives of military professionalization, interservice cooperation, and the shaping of modern U.S. armed forces
Returning to the Financial Services Workforce after an Extended Child-Rearing Leave: A Descriptive Study Regarding the Influence of Mentorship on Feelings of Identity and Self-Efficacy
Objectives: To explore the experiences of women in the United States that have returned to the financial services workforce after an extended child-rearing leave and their descriptions of the transition back to the workforce, specifically regarding feelings of self-efficacy and identity and the influence of mentorship.
Study design/setting: This study utilized a qualitative descriptive research methodology to capture descriptions through semi-structured interviews and a focus group. Data were gathered by means of extensive one-on-one interviews with women throughout the country and an extensive focus group discussion. All study participants were currently working in the financial services sector after a minimum one-year absence due to child-rearing.
Principal findings: The findings imply that multiple factors influence the experiences of women transitioning back into the workforce summarized by five primary themes: 1) challenges, pressure and feelings of identity and self-efficacy, 2) merging personal and professional identities, 3) reinventing professional competencies and self-efficacy, 4) organizational intent to provide connection, goal-setting and path development through mentorship and 5) the unique value of mothers in a historically male-dominated industry and the importance of mentorship to support them.
Conclusions: The findings suggest that women returning to the financial services industry after an extended child-rearing find mentorship beneficial by: differentiating and/or merging professional and personal identities, combating imposter syndrome, balancing pressure from both home and work, highlighting value despite resume gap and minimizing self-doubt, heightening sense of belongingness in a historically male-dominated industry and developing a strategic career and development path to meet desired professional goals
Measurement of the differential tt⎯⎯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass and extraction of the top quark mass in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks
A measurement of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of Lorentz-boosted top quarks is presented. The measurement is performed in the lepton + jets channel of top quark pair production (tt⎯⎯) events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay are reconstructed using a single large-radius jet with transverse momentum greater than 400GeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138fb−1. The differential tt⎯⎯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded to the particle level and is used to extract the top quark mass. The jet mass scale is calibrated using the hadronic W boson decay within the large-radius jet. The uncertainties in the modeling of the final state radiation are reduced by studying angular correlations in the jet substructure. These developments lead to a significant increase in precision, and a top quark mass of 173.06±0.84GeV
Kansas Early Childhood Transition Task Force Tour: Preliminary Results from Community Engagement Tour
Kansas Executive Order 23-01 established the Early Childhood Transition Task Force (ECTTF) and tasked the group with holding a series of meetings across the state to generate public feedback and responses to Kansas’ current early childhood system. To better understand the current situation of early childhood efforts in the State of Kansas, the Kansas ECTTF conducted a statewide tour with virtual and in-person opportunities for participants to reflect on Kansas’ early childhood system.
The participants’ responses were prompted by questions in three different categories: Needs and Barriers, Bright Spots, and State’s Efficiency in Early Child Care and Education. Participants were also asked to rate how hopeful they are that Kansas is going in the right direction in early childhood. The average hope score was high, which conveys trust and confidence from those in attendance.
Based on these findings, the Task Force developed recommendations to improve Kansas’ current early childhood system and the state’s role in it
Deep Boosted Molecular Dynamics: Accelerating Molecular Simulations with Gaussian Boost Potentials Generated Using Probabilistic Bayesian Deep Neural Network

To access the final edited and published work see https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpclett.3c00926.We have developed a new deep boosted molecular dynamics (DBMD) method. Probabilistic Bayesian neural network models were implemented to construct boost potentials that exhibit Gaussian distribution with minimized anharmonicity, thereby allowing for accurate energetic reweighting and enhanced sampling of molecular simulations. DBMD was demonstrated on model systems of alanine dipeptide and the fast-folding protein and RNA structures. For alanine dipeptide, 30 ns DBMD simulations captured up to 83–125 times more backbone dihedral transitions than 1 μs conventional molecular dynamics (cMD) simulations and were able to accurately reproduce the original free energy profiles. Moreover, DBMD sampled multiple folding and unfolding events within 300 ns simulations of the chignolin model protein and identified low-energy conformational states comparable to previous simulation findings. Finally, DBMD captured a general folding pathway of three hairpin RNAs with the GCAA, GAAA, and UUCG tetraloops. Based on a deep learning neural network, DBMD provides a powerful and generally applicable approach to boosting biomolecular simulations. A Preliminary Look at the Value-Based Payment Initiative
Value-Based Payment structures were implemented for mental health agencies receiving funding from the Jackson County, MO Community Mental Health Fund. These structures focus on key performance indicators developed based on agency values related to client access and clinical outcomes of behavioral health treatment. Interpersonal Media Among Americans’ Sympathy Groups: Theory of the Niche and Satisfying Social Needs
This paper was presented at the National Communication Association conference, November 16-19, 2023 in New Orleans, LA.This manuscript extends the theory of the niche by examining the frequency of interpersonal media use among participants’ personal network, and by reporting the degree to which individuals perceive three social needs are satisfied by nine forms of communication. From April 21 to May 3 of 2021, a quota sample of American adults (N = 1,869) completed four name generation tasks to identify up to 16 alters, leading to an average of four alters per person (n = 7,471). Participants indicated the frequency with which they communicated with each alter using eight interpersonal media as well as face-to-face communication in the past year. Participants’ relationship partner type (e.g., spouse, friend) was tied to media use, which suggests particular media are favored for distinct relationship types. Analyses of the social needs (i.e., causal conversation, meaningful talk, efficient exchange) suggested a clear hierarchy among interpersonal media and minimal niche overlap. The association between need satisfaction and frequency of use, however, demonstrated that as people perceive their social needs being met they more frequently use all interpersonal media. Taken together, the results suggest that although there are differences between interpersonal media in terms of perceived need fulfilment, increased experience with using interpersonal

Use of gene sequences as type for naming prokaryotes: Recommendations of the international committee on the taxonomy of chlamydiae
The International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP) discussed and rejected in 2020 a proposal to modify the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes to allow the use of gene sequences as type for naming prokaryotes. An alternative nomenclatural code, the Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes Described from Sequence Data (SeqCode), which considers genome sequences as type material for naming species, was published in 2022. Members of the ICSP subcommittee for the taxonomy of the phylum Chlamydiae (Chlamydiota) consider that the use of gene sequences as type would benefit the taxonomy of microorganisms that are difficult to culture such as the chlamydiae and other strictly intracellular bacteria. We recommend the registration of new names of uncultured prokaryotes in the SeqCode registry
IN SITU U-PB GEOCHRONOLOGY OF PEROVSKITE AND SCHORLOMITE GARNET FROM MAGNET COVE, AR: NEW AGE CONSTRAINTS ON ALKALINE MAGMATISM AND SUITABILITY AS REFERENCE MATERIALS
This undergraduate thesis was submitted to the graduate degree program in Geology and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science.The Magnet Cove Igneous Complex (MCIC) in Arkansas consists of multiple ring dikes of silica undersaturated rocks including various syenites, ijolites, phonolites, trachytes, and carbonatite (Erickson and Blade, 1963). The emplacement of the rocks is hypothesized to be from outside-in, with the outermost syenite ring emplaced first, and the carbonatite last (Erickson and Blade, 1963). There is an abundance of titanium- and zirconium-rich minerals including perovskite, titanite, and schorlomite, kimzeyite garnet. This study used laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) after petrography characterization to date emplacement of the MCIC and test if these Ti minerals are suitable as U-Pb reference materials. Results will contribute to the discussion on the cause of Cretaceous magmatism in the midcontinent US.
One perovskite grain was analyzed with 34 spots of 35μ size. Of the garnets, multiple grains were analyzed and the number was dependent on rock type, surface area of the grain, and inclusion-rich material. Upwards of 40 spots were used on each rock type and were all 85μm. 85μm size was based on U and Pb concentrations.
The age of perovskite was initially calculated to be 85.7 ± 5.5 Ma, which is slightly younger than previous estimates of the MCIC. However, when the common Pb ratio was anchored at 0.82 ± 0.04, it is closer to other calculated ages at 100.5 ± 1.7 Ma. Garnet ages were calculated from four different rock types: fine-grained ijolite (FGI), garnet-pseudoleucite syenite (GPS), garnet ijolite (GI), and garnet-biotite ijolite (GBI). Each rock achieved a slightly different age; however, the age range sits within the bounds between 98.1 Ma and102.8 Ma, which is consistent with the estimates for the magmatism in the Arkansas Alkaline Province (AAP). FGI: 98.5 ± 0.6 Ma, GPS: 101.4 ± 0.5 or 101.1 ± 0.5 with an anchored common Pb at 0.8 ± 0.08, GI: 98.1 ± 0.6 Ma, GBI: 102.8 ± 0.6 Ma. U-Pb dating of schorlomite by LA-ICP-MS is ongoing and will test their use as potential reference materials in future studies
Broadband in Kansas: The Challenges of Digital Access and Affordability
The Institute for Policy & Social Research (IPSR) at the University of Kansas received funding from the Economic Development Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CARES Act to study broadband access in the state of Kansas. To
conduct this study, IPSR examined existing data, fielded our own survey of broadband speeds and access, conducted focus groups, and commissioned a chapter on the digital divide within the state of Kansas. The report discusses available data sources and introduces the speed test data collected by IPSR in order to map the broadband access landscape in Kansas. Along with speed tests, the Kansas broadband survey collected information regarding broadband access, adequacy, affordability and satisfaction. The survey data were enhanced by interviews and focus groups that allowed Kansans to share their struggles with internet access in their own words. The report also investigates digital equity using surveys and interviews conducted at public libraries that revealed the challenges faced by library patrons, including lack of digital access and literacy. The report that is summarized below indicates a rural-urban digital divide in terms of access, affordability, and satisfaction with broadband services. The data in this report indicate that up to 1,000,000 Kansans live in regions that lack access to highspeed broadband services, now considered to be 100 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 20 Mbps upload (100/20).
