La naturaleza desde el mundo que no importa: sentir el antropoceno desde Luso-África y Latinoamérica
Durante la Edad Media europea un arreglo particular de creencias, conocimientos, instituciones y prácticas ambientales se desarrolló dentro de la unidad biogeográfica de la Península Ibérica por una sociedad multicultural. A partir del siglo XV, este arreglo comenzó a ser “exportado” mediante la coerción a cuatro continentes y transformó tanto las relaciones ambientales de una amplia gama de comunidades humanas y redes ecológicas alrededor del mundo. A esto lo llamo el “Antropoceno Ibérico” (AI). La presente tesis sigue los efectos del AI en tres continentes, analiza sus conflictos con diversos entornos naturales y sociales y propone la importancia de considerar las particularidades de este proceso si queremos encontrar soluciones prácticas —aunque parciales— para los retos impuestos por el cambio climático a la humanidad.El marco teórico de esta tesis se sostiene en tres pilares. Primero, uso las propuestas de etnoecología desarrolladas por Narciso Barrera-Bassols y Víctor M. Toledo para definir dicho arreglo de creencias, conocimientos, instituciones y prácticas como una matriz kosmos-corpus-praxis, lo que me permite compararla con otras matrices k-c-p. Segundo, utilizo las reflexiones de Richard Schechner sobre el performance puesto que, a pesar de que no todo es un performance, todo puede ser analizado como si lo fuera y, para estudiar asuntos ambientales y relaciones sociedad-naturaleza (SN), es más útil analizar los performance de los actores que elucidar sus intenciones. Tercero, mezclo las clasificaciones complementarias sobre ideologías y movimientos ambientales hechas por Carolyn Merchant y por Joan Martínez Alier para esquematizar cada relación SN encontrada. Después del capítulo introductorio, cada uno de los cinco capítulos subsecuentes versa sobre una encrucijada particular de conocimientos, especies y entornos inertes, de modo que cada capítulo usa aproximaciones críticas adicionales.El segundo capitulo, “(Tras bambalinas): la naturaleza como ruina” analiza las consecuencias del AI en el siglo XIX a través de ocho novelas realistas españolas escritas por Emilia Pardo Bazán, Benito Pérez Galdós y Leopoldo Alas. El tercero, “La naturaleza como (bio)escenario” utiliza una aproximación decolonial de la filosofía de la ciencia para discutir la traducción de la matriz ibérica a Luso-África y mostrar la multiplicidad de definiciones de “espacio” y “entorno” en Luandino Vieira, Ondjaki, João Melo, Luís Bernardo Honwana, Paulina Chiziane, João Paulo Borges Coelho y Mia Couto. El cuarto, “La naturaleza como actuación”, dialoga con Anna L. Tsing y Amitav Ghosh para analizar el performance esperado de las estaciones del año en tres autores de la cuenca del Caribe: Sergio Ramírez, Junot Díaz y Alejandro Ricaño. El quinto, “(Los otros personajes)”, utilizando el concepto de “ambientalismo malo” de Nicole Seymour se analiza la ironía del performance ambientalista de los actores humanos —usando una novela de Daniel Rodríguez Barrón y las transcripciones del debate en la cámara de diputados de México a propósito de la prohibición de los animales en los circos— para mostrar la imposibilidad de una solución simple y unívoca. El último capítulo, “La naturaleza como Grand Finale”, utiliza estudios subalternos (principalmente Dipesh Chakrabarty), estudios de género (especialmente Emily Hind) y de teoría del trauma para discutir de qué hablamos cuando hablamos del fin del mundo en el contexto del cambio climático analizando dos autores del Cono Sur —Hernán Rivera Letelier y Carlos Ríos—, dos de Angola —Dario de Melo y Fradique— y un relato testimonial desde México escrito por Guillermo Castro Miranda. Sostengo que el fin del mundo ya ha sido una realidad constante a lo largo del mundo ibérico desde, al menos, el siglo XIX.En conclusión propongo, a partir del mundo ibérico, del mundo que no importa, que para tener un entendimiento más cabal de los procesos humanos que han disparado el cambio climático necesitamos analizar de cerca otras historias socioambientales y no sólo aspirar a que la historia pretendidamente hegemónica es nuestra historia común. Dichas otras historias ya nos dan pistas —encontradas en la literatura y otros productos culturales— acerca de qué relaciones SN han tenido consecuencias ecológicas radicalmente distintas. Y así, pueden apuntar el camino para un conjunto de sociedades más sustentables, diversas e incluyentes
Extremizers to the Strichartz Inequality in Dimension 1
We study the extremal problem for the Strichartz inequality for the Schrödinger equation onR2.We show that the solutions to the associated Euler-Lagrange equation are exponentially decayingin the Fourier space and thus can be extended to be complex analytic. Consequently we providea new proof to the characterization of the extremal functions: the only extremals are Gaussianfunctions, which was investigated previously by Foschi [1] and Hundertmark-Zharnitsky [2]
Finding a Therapist That ‘Speaks Your Language’: How Psychotherapists Discursively Construct the Problems They Treat
Nearly 1 in 5 Americans experience a diagnosable mental illness every year (SAMHSA, 2019). Although this statistic may be alarming in conjunction with the escalating need for accessible psychotherapy services (Cohn, 2015), it does not account for all of the reasons outside of clinical diagnosis that individuals may seek these services. These reasons, or “presenting problems” in the verbiage of mental and medical health professionals, can act as mediators between an individual’s current cognitive and emotional experience and their self-evaluated need for psychotherapy. The current study aimed to identify and explain the ways in which psychotherapists construct presenting problem discourse to their potential patients through the media where this discourse is most likely to be seen, the internet. An exploratory thematic analysis of 40 clinical psychotherapists’ Psychology Today profiles and websites (208 webpages in total) was conducted to uncover the five major themes for the discursive construction of presenting problems. They are: (1) lay description, (2) clinical diagnoses, (3) ailing identities, (4) the enigmatic self, and (5) cosmetic psychotherapy. These themes represent the various types of presenting problem messages that individuals considering psychotherapy observe from the clinicians they are considering choosing. The findings highlight multiple ethical considerations for presenting problem discourse, such as the use of identity labels and vague phraseology in mental health marketing. Practical implications suggest a need for psychotherapists to be better informed on presenting problem discourse strategies and should practice awareness in their message construction
The Industrialization of Milk in America During the Antebellum and Civil War Eras
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, most Americans harvested the milk they needed for food and medicine from their own or a neighbor's cow. By the end of the nineteenth century, most Americans purchased milk from peddlers or grocers, without ever seeing, much less feeding and caring for, the animals that furnished their favorite comfort food. During that same one-hundred-year period, Americans witnessed the transformation of milk from a variable and often dangerous fluid into a standardized, sanitized commodity that came packaged, and in some cases, dehydrated, in glass bottles, cans, and even boxes. This dissertation uses methodologies and models borrowed from a number of fields – among them environmental history, envirotech, social and cultural history, urban history, medical history, military history, animal studies, food history, agricultural history, and gender studies – to explain how and why these transformative processes occurred and with what consequences for consumers. It does so in three steps. First, it explains how and why Americans of the era inscribed cow’s milk with culinary, medical, and symbolic value, even as they struggled to make large quantities of the fluid and move it over any distance. Second, it describes Antebellum Americans’ (often disastrous) attempts to shrink the distance between rural cows and a growing urban milk market, culminating not only in the “swill milk” crisis of the 1840s and 1850s, but also in the commercial success of less-perishable milk products, among them Gail Borden Jr.’s canned sweetened condensed milk. Third, it draws these narrative threads together during the Civil War years, noting that Borden’s invention gave Union medical officials and civilian aid workers an unprecedented ability to move life-saving milk to hospitals, aid stations, and the very front lines of combat, reducing the time that sick and wounded soldiers had to wait for aid from days to hours to minutes. On returning to their homes, Union veterans and aid workers were more inclined to trust milk harvested on distant farms, giving a crucial boost to the Borden Company, specifically, and the growing industrial milk industry more generally
Designing Formulation Strategies for Enhanced Stability of Therapeutic Peptides in Aqueous Solutions: A Review
Over the past few decades, there has been a tremendous increase in the utilization of therapeutic peptides. Therapeutic peptides are usually administered via the parenteral route, requiring an aqueous formulation. Unfortunately, peptides are often unstable in aqueous solutions, affecting stability and bioactivity. Although a stable and dry formulation for reconstitution might be designed, from a pharmaco-economic and practical convenience point of view, a peptide formulation in an aqueous liquid form is preferred. Designing formulation strategies that optimize peptide stability may improve bioavailability and increase therapeutic efficacy. This literature review provides an overview of various degradation pathways and formulation strategies to stabilize therapeutic peptides in aqueous solutions. First, we introduce the major peptide stability issues in liquid formulations and the degradation mechanisms. Then, we present a variety of known strategies to inhibit or slow down peptide degradation. Overall, the most practical approaches to peptide stabilization are pH optimization and selecting the appropriate type of buffer. Other practical strategies to reduce peptide degradation rates in solution are the application of co-solvency, air exclusion, viscosity enhancement, PEGylation, and using polyol excipients
Sustainable and Cost-Effective Gel Documentation
A common laboratory method involves gel electrophoresis followed by photographic documentation of the results, a procedure which is performed worldwide by students and experienced scientists alike. Proprietary Gel Documentation Systems are convenient and useful for documentation of electrophoresis results, but the systems can be prohibitively expensive to purchase and repair, they contain features that are not necessary for everyday documentation, and some users may not find the systems intuitive to operate. We describe our gel documentation setup that meets the everyday needs for documentation in our lab. The setup is inexpensive, modular, user friendly, and increases sustainability through extending the working life of obsolete cell phones, iPads, or other electronic devices containing a camera. More importantly, the setup completely shields users from potentially damaging ultraviolet radiation
Rapid differentiation of soil and root microbiomes in response to plant composition and biodiversity in the field
Research suggests that microbiomes play a major role in structuring plant communities and influencing ecosystem processes, however, the relative roles and strength of change of microbial components have not been identified. We measured the response of fungal, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF), bacteria, and oomycete composition 4 months after planting of field plots that varied in plant composition and diversity. Plots were planted using 18 prairie plant species from three plant families (Poaceae, Fabaceae, and Asteraceae) in monoculture, 2, 3, or 6 species richness mixtures and either species within multiple families or one family. Soil cores were collected and homogenized per plot and DNA were extracted from soil and roots of each plot. We found that all microbial groups responded to the planting design, indicating rapid microbiome response to plant composition. Fungal pathogen communities were strongly affected by plant diversity. We identified OTUs from genera of putatively pathogenic fungi that increased with plant family, indicating likely pathogen specificity. Bacteria were strongly differentiated by plant family in roots but not soil. Fungal pathogen diversity increased with planted species richness, while oomycete diversity, as well as bacterial diversity in roots, decreased. AMF differentiation in roots was detected with individual plant species, but not plant family or richness. Fungal saprotroph composition differentiated between plant family composition in plots, providing evidence for decomposer home-field advantage. The observed patterns are consistent with rapid microbiome differentiation with plant composition, which could generate rapid feedbacks on plant growth in the field, thereby potentially influencing plant community structure, and influence ecosystem processes. Nanoalum formulations containing aluminum hydroxide and CpG 1018 adjuvants: The effect on stability and immunogenicity of a recombinant SARS-CoV-2 RBD antigen (Dataset)
Aluminum-salt vaccine adjuvants (alum) are commercially available as micron-sized particles with varying chemical composition and crystallinity. There are reports of enhanced adjuvanticity when the alum’s particle size is reduced to the nanometer range. Previously, we demonstrated that a recombinant receptor-binding domain (RBD)-based COVID-19 vaccine candidate (RBD-J; RBD-L452K-F490W) formulated with aluminum hydroxide (Alhydrogel®; AH) and CpG 1018™ (CpG) adjuvants induced potent neutralizing antibody responses in mice yet displayed instability during storage. In this work, we evaluated whether sonication of AH to the nanometer size range (nanoAH) could further enhance immunogenicity or improve storage stability of the above formulation. The addition of CpG to nanoAH (at mouse doses), however, caused re-agglomeration of nanoAH. AH-CpG interactions were evaluated by Langmuir binding isotherms and zeta potential measurements, and stabilized nanoAH + CpG formulations of RBD-J were then designed by (1) optimizing CpG:Aluminum dose ratios or (2) adding a small-molecule polyanion (phytic acid, PA). Compared with the micron-sized AH + CpG formulation, the two stabilized nanoAH + CpG formulations of RBD-J demonstrated no enhancement in neutralizing titers in mice, but the PA-containing nanoAH + CpG formulation showed improved RBD-J storage stability trends (at 4, 25, and 37°C). The formulation protocols presented herein can be employed to evaluate the potential benefits of the nanoAH + CpG adjuvant combination with other vaccine antigens in different animal models
