A strategy to combat bullying in primary schools in the Osizweni Circuit

    No full text
English: The aim of this study is to formulate a strategy to combat bullying in primary schools in the Osizweni Circuit in the Amajuba District. This study was initiatedby the increase in cases of bullying in South African primary schools. Bullying can be described as unfair or adverse conduct by an aggressor towards a victim, which includes harmful actions, such as name-calling, inflicting pain, pulling faces and making threats. Primary schoolsareregarded as institutionsthat provide academic education to children from Grade R to 7. The appropriate theoretical framework to couch this study is Ubuntu because it emphasises the emancipation and empowerment of the oppressed, and maintaining and strengthening the community. The study uses participatory action research as a qualitative enquiry methodology. The following people constitute the team of participants for co-research: one circuit manager, one Special Needs Education Services senior education specialist, one principal, two teachers, two parents, two learners who are victims of bullying, two learners engaged in bullying and other stakeholders. The other stakeholders included a representative of the South African Police Services (SAPS), a local councillor and a social development representative. The datacollected were audio-taped with the consent of the co-researchers, and transcribed and analysed to give meaning and structure to the data. The data were analysed using critical discourse analysis at the textual, discursive and social structure levels. The findings of the study determined whether the intervention was successful or not. This study will help to combat bullying in South African primary schools.

Physical demands of elite lead rugby union referees

    No full text
The aim of this study was threefold: to determine the physical demands on elite lead rugby union referees, to determine whether physical demands and performance of referees changed during the course of a match (first half versus second half), and to determine whether physical demands and performance were consistent across the sample of referees. Physical profile data, heart rate (HR) recordings and global positioning system (GPS) (GPSports: SPI HPU) data were collected from 17 lead elite referees during 205 national and international matches. The mean duration of a match was 97.6 min and the mean distance covered by the referees was 6,826m, the mean values for the two match halves being virtually identical, 3402.9m for the first half and 3395.3m for the second half respectively. In contrast, referees produce about 5% more metabolic power during the first half of a match (mean 6.21W/Kg) compare to the second half. On average referees spent 52.4% of the time standing still or walking, 20.3% jogging (2.3m.s-1 – 4.1m.s-1) and 27.3% in the “work zone”(4.1m.s-1 – 9.6m.s-1) with again virtually identical mean values for the two match halves. During a match referees spent 46.8% below 80% HRmax and 53.2% above HRmax, while spending 8% less time above 80% HRmax in the second half. The mean number of high-speed accelerations, high-speed decelerations and sprints/surges were approximately 20% lower during the second half (5.5, 9.2 & 2) than during the first match half (7, 11.1 & 2.4), although the decreases in absolute counts are small. These differences between the first and second halves of the match suggest that there is either no, or at most a slight tiring effect during the course of the match. Furthermore, referees generally performed consistently with regard to the physical performance measures studied. In conclusion, our data suggest that the elite panel referees have met the physical performance standards required for refereeing at this leve

The experiences of compassion fatigue and resilience among nurses in private medical facilities

    No full text
English: Individuals choose nursing as their occupation due to their desire to care for others who are in pain or are experiencing suffering. Although they experience a high level of satisfaction from their occupation, not all nurses are equipped to deal with the effects of being exposed to secondary trauma. Those working in trauma units are exposed to trauma on a daily basis and are therefore at risk of developing compassion fatigue (CF). The consequences of CF are noticeable in the personal and interpersonal lives of individuals, as well as in their occupation. Resilience, however, can mitigate the negative effects of CF. Therefore, it is important for nurses to enhance their level of resiliency. The aim of this study was to explore and describe South African nursing professionals’ experiences of compassion fatigue and resilience. A qualitative multiple case study approach was used to elicit rich descriptions from research participants in connection with their experiences of CF and resilience. Six participants were chosen for the study. These participants were recruited by means of purposeful sampling. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data for this study. Transcriptions of the interviews were done verbatim and thematic analysis was conducted in order to analyse the data. Four main themes emanated from the data analysis: firstly, the different types of fatigue and their impact on nurses emerged as a theme. The second theme consists of the coping strategies that aid nurses in overcoming CF and developing resilience. Thirdly, the intrapersonal characteristics needed to cope emerged as an important part of nursing. Finally, the ways in which nurses care for and support their patients emerged as a theme within this study. The findings reveal that trauma nurses experience various types of fatigue due to the amount of compassion they display. Therefore, making use of coping strategies that aid them in developing resilience, reduces the negative effects of CF. The insights gained throughout this study may contribute towards developing a greater understanding of resilience and how it can be used to mitigate the negative effects of CF.Afrikaans: Mense kies verpleging as beroep omdat hulle ander wat pyn ly of leed verduur, wil versorg.

An assessment framework for adult learners with learning disabilities in post-school education and training

    No full text
This study was conducted with a focus on the two broad areas of interest that I have as a practitioner in the field of adult education and training, i.e. assessment practices in PSET institutions and the effect of these assessment practices, specifically on the learning and learning achievement of adult learners with learning disabilities. It can be assumed that most adult learners with learning disabilities in PSET environments are most probably subjected to learning, teaching and assessment practices that cater for learners without significant learning disabilities. Therefore, current assessment practices in the PSET environment may not provide an equitable opportunity for adult learners with learning disabilities to demonstrate the learning outcomes achieved against the set standards. It was therefore necessary to investigate the experiences and perceptions of adult learners with learning disabilities and their lecturers/facilitators/instructors of the current assessment practices in PSET programmes, and if the practices are not appropriate, to investigate how the relevant learners’ achievement of the same learning outcomes and set standards might be assessed in alternative, inclusive and more equitable ways. The study focused on achieving the following four objectives: 1. To investigate the possible positive and negative effects of assessment practices and concessions reported in literature, on adult learners with learning disabilities’ ability to demonstrate their competence against minimum standards. 2. To investigate how adult learners with learning disabilities’ in PSET experience and perceive the assessment practices they are currently subjected to, and how these practices influence their learning and ultimate achievement. 3. To determine how the facilitators/lecturers/instructors of adult learners with learning disabilities in PSET experience and perceive the assessment practices they use to assess their learners with learning disabilities, including the effect that they believe their practices might have on these learners’ learning and ultimate achievement. 4. To compile and validate an assessment framework that will optimally cater for the needs of adult learners with learning disabilities in PSET. The literature review informed the initial empirical study as well as the assessment framework that was finally compiled, evaluated and validated by a panel of purposively selected experts. The empirical phase of the research was mixed methods in nature and used a multipronged data gathering strategy. The first phase of data collection included a survey questionnaire using open-ended questions posed to the two participant groups, i.e. currently enrolled adult learners with learning disabilities and their lecturers/facilitators/instructors. The second phase of the data gathering involved focus groups and one-on-one interviews with some of these learners, their lecturers/facilitators/instructors as well as two specialists. Finally, the integration of these collected data and the literature study findings was done by comparing and converging these data to compile a proposed assessment framework for assessing adult learners with learning disabilities in a PSET environment. The proposed framework was presented to the panel of experts for their evaluation and validation, using a survey questionnaire that allowed this participant group to rate all the features and sub-features of the proposed framework. The data gathered in this phase was then used to amend and finalise the assessment framework, which is the final outcome of this research study. As pragmatist, the value of the study lies in the practical aspect that the framework offers, i.e. the opportunity to use the assessment framework as a vantage point for the development of an inclusive assessment environment that has the ability to improve the assessment experiences of adult learners with learning disabilities by providing practitioners and policy makers with practical tools to realise their inclusion agenda

Solvent retention capacity and swelling index of glutenin as selection tools in South African bread wheat breeding

    No full text
To release wheat varieties which comply with strict end-use quality criteria and to deal with the polygenic nature of quality breeding, a breeder needs to be informed of quality potential in early generation populations. This research aimed to determine the use of two small scale rapid tests, solvent retention capacity (SRC) and swelling index of glutenin (SIG) as selection tools for bread wheat quality breeding. Seventeen hard red winter wheat cultivars grown in the dryland summer rainfall region, 22 hard red spring wheat cultivars grown in the irrigated summer rainfall region and nine hard red spring wheat cultivars grown in the winter rainfall region were evaluated with the SRC test requiring a 0.3 g flour sample and the SIG test requiring a 0.04 g flour sample. The relationships of the SRC and SIG parameters with grain, milling, rheological and baking quality-related parameters were determined. Combined ANOVA showed highly significant differences (p≤0.001) among cultivars, environments and cultivar x environment interaction for the measured quality parameters, and the SRC and SIG parameters. Variation between genotypes was large and genotypes contributed significantly to the variance in lactic acid SRC, distilled water SRC, sodium carbonate SRC, sodium bicarbonate SRC, sucrose SRC and lactic acid SIG, indicating the potential of these parameters for selecting improved bread wheat quality. SRC values were significantly (p≤0.001) correlated with bread making quality parameters. The highest correlations were between lactic acid SRC and flour protein content (r=0.67, p≤0.001) in the winter rainfall region and lactic acid SIG and flour protein content (r=0.75, p≤0.001) in the irrigated summer rainfall region. Correlations between SRC, SIG and bread making quality parameters were inconsistent across regions, except for lactic acid SRC and lactic acid SIG with flour protein content and lactic acid SRC, sucrose SRC and lactic acid SIG with alveogram dough strength. Regression coefficients for grain, milling, rheological and baking quality-related characteristics, as predicted by the SRC and SIG parameters, were low to moderately low (12% to 60%), indicating that the SRC and SIG parameters are poor predictors for most of the bread wheat quality parameters in South African wheat. Lactic acid SRC and distilled water SRC were the most common predictor variables, explaining the variation in the models for grain and milling characteristics. Lactic acid SRC, sucrose SRC and lactic acid SIG were responsible for contributing to the variation in most of the models for rheological and baking quality-related characteristics. The alkaline water retention capacity method (sodium bicarbonate SRC) was not effective in predicting bread wheat quality in this study and was initially developed for soft wheat applications. The lactic acid SRC solvent test was the most useful for assessing bread wheat quality in this study and is recommended for the evaluation of hard red winter and spring wheat bread making quality potential.Winter Cereal Trus
