Almost a decade ago, when I first considered creating a Model United Nations 
(MUN) course when I was working at Konan University, I was told that Professor 
Lori Zenuk-Nishide was the best person to help me develop this program. After 
contacting her, I was immediately overwhelmed by her enthusiasm and support 
in building a successful MUN program at my university. She took time out of her 
busy schedule to visit my classes with a student leader and provide my students 
with a foundation that is necessary to have a successful MUN conference 
experience. Without her dedication to MUN as an educational project, the course 
of my career and many others would have undoubtedly been quite different. 
 
It is rare to have one individual who is so personally responsible for the growth 
of an entire field within education. Still, it would not be hyperbolic to say that 
Prof. Zenuk-Nishide has established the English-language Model United Nations 
community in Japan. Model United Nations is an educational program that seeks 
to have students learn about and discuss issues that are impactful at an 
international level, to build knowledge and understanding of international 
relations and world events, as well as understand these global issues from the 
various perspectives of countries which make up the United Nations. In addition, 
MUN events are an incredible platform for individual growth and development, 
where leadership skills, social cohesion, and foreign language development grow 
by leaps and bounds for participating students. Each MUN will typically choose 
a theme focusing on a particular global issue and discuss it within the framework 
of a UN organization, body, or agency, such as UNICEF, UNESCO, the World 
Health Organization, and so on. Suffice it to say, that the educational 
opportunities which make up the basis of a MUN program are both essential to 
the growth of future global leaders, as well as being unique as a curriculum at 
schools. Prof. Zenuk-Nishide’s devotion to this curriculum has helped develop an

international community of students, alumni, and professors who have all 
changed their lives under her guidance. 
 
Prof. Zenuk-Nishide’s first MUN programs started over three decades ago, where, 
at Kyoto Gaidai Nishi High School in 1991, she started the first-ever English-
language Model United Nations conference for high school students, which now 
runs as the Kansai High School Model United Nations conference, which is held 
annually in Kyoto. In the span of the 33 conferences, over 6000 high school 
students in Japan have participated and used this platform to grow and develop as 
students and international citizens. After joining Kobe City University of Foreign 
Studies, Prof. Zenuk-Nishide also created the Japan University English Model 
United Nations conference in 2010. In the decade-plus since the inception of this 
conference, thousands more university students in Japan and from universities in 
Germany, Malaysia, Canada, and other countries have attended JUEMUN. It is 
due to the hard work and effort of Prof. Zenuk-Nishide that these two MUN 
conferences have been running successfully for many years. From the 
development of these two conferences, dozens more smaller-scale conferences 
have been birthed, all of which can trace their lineage back to the work of Prof. 
Zenuk-Nishide. 
 
In addition, at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, Prof. Zenuk-Nishide 
started to take student delegations to attend the National Model United Nations 
(NMUN) conference, which is among the highest-level MUNs around the world. 
Since 2008, dozens of Kobe Gaidai students have participated in NMUN 
conferences, primarily in New York, but also in Germany, China, Korea, Czechia, 
Canada, and many other host countries. NMUN conferences are the oldest MUN 
conferences in the world, pre-dating even the United Nations, as it initially 
operated as a Model League of Nations. Each year, thousands of students from 
dozens of countries and hundreds of universities meet in New York to simulate 
the UN, with students representing UN Member States across tens of UN agencies 
and bodies. Prof. Zenuk-Nishide has been able to bring NMUN to Japan and host 
the NMUN conference at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, the only 
university in Japan to do so. Successful NMUN conferences in 2016 and 2022 
show her dedication to the growth of MUN in Japan and have allowed many 
Japanese university students and students from universities around the world to

take part in these great events. 
 
I have worked with Prof. Zenuk-Nishide since 2017 and have been constantly 
impressed and honestly shocked at the wellspring of energy and effort that she 
has provided to her students and the MUN community overall. She has always 
given all her time and energy to the benefit of the community. Her actions to 
support professors who also are developing MUN programs both domestically 
and internationally display her dedication. As well, the care she has given to so 
many students over her career is shown by how many of her former students stay 
in touch with her and have so many fond memories of their time with Prof. Zenuk-
Nishide and how their time with her is so influential for their future lives. In 
addition, so many former students continue to give back to the MUN community 
at Kobe Gaidai through their support to our current students and professors. 
 
The impact that Prof. Zenuk-Nishide’s legacy will have on the thousands of 
students and dozens of coworkers is hard to fully grasp. In addition to the ongoing 
success of Kansai High School Model United Nations, Japan University English 
Model United Nations, and NMUN conferences in international venues, smaller 
MUNs around Kansai, Japan, and Asia all display the influence that Prof. Zenuk-
Nishide has had in this field. As a faculty member seeking to continue to develop 
the MUN program that she has created and developed, I fully feel the enormity 
of the impact that she has had on the field and our community. It is my great honor

★お礼のことば 
今回、このような私にも退官記念号として名前を出していただくことに心
からお礼申し上げます。毎春、図書館の前のハナミズキの花やメタセコイア
の新緑を眺めながら、春休みから学生たちが戻ってきたキャンパスに頼もし
さを感じつつ、私が大学教員なんて…といういつもいつも抱えていた劣等感
に近い緊張感をもって過ごしていました。自分の人生は本当に「旅人」なん
だなぁ～と思いつつ初めて住む「関西」を楽しむとともに、劣等感はあるけ
れど結果的には外大大好き！と 20 年間過ごしました。外大の同僚の皆様、事
務の皆様、そして歴代私のクラスにいた学生たちに本当に感謝です！お世話
になりました。いろいろありがとうございました。 
 
★最終授業 
2024 年 1 月 26 日正午、最後の課題を 2 分前に与えた後、英米学科専攻語
学 1 年生の「作文」の最終授業を終えました。文字通り、最終授業、最終講
義でした。そして思いがけず学生たちから小さな花束をいただきました。「や
りきった」という実感がこみあげた瞬間でした。冒頭の写真は、そのとき学
生の一人が撮ってくれたものです。 
私が出した最後の課題は、2 つ。提出や連絡の必要なし。 
① 絶望しない 
② 友達とのネットワークを大切にする 
2004 年 4 月に外大に着任し、おそらくその２年後くらいから毎回担当教科
の最終授業の時に出してきた課題です。世界に羽ばたいていくだろう若者た
ちへのメッセージでもありました。どんな失恋も失敗も命を取られることほ
どのものはないこと、人とのつながりは「手入れ」をしていないと消滅して
しまい、それは後々大きな損失になる場合があること、そんなことを伝えな
がらあっという間に 20 年が過ぎました。

★リカレント、そして教員研修 
 公立の小学校での英語教育が始まる…かも、という社会の動きの中で、リ
カレント大学院の教員として採用していただき、それとともに学部のいくつ
かの授業も担当させていただきました。リカレント大学院では、私自身が博
士課程で学んだ言語教育としての理論と、その実践についての講座や修士論
文指導をさせていただき、学部においては総合文化グループの一員として、
児童英語教育や小学校英語教育論などを担当させていただきました。 
 全国の公立小学校で英語教育が始まる、ということについては、産業界か
らのそれを望む声「英語が話せる日本人の育成」のようなことが言われてい
ましたが、そのことと小学校の時間割の中に英語が入ることとは一体どんな
関係があるのか、小学校から英語を教えたら日本人は英語が喋れるようにな
るとでも考えているのだろうか、と疑問を持ちつつ、小学校文化の中での言
語教育としての外国語（英語）をどのように扱うべきでどのような指導が必
要なのかを常に追い求め、現場の先生方と考えながらの日々でした。やると
決まったのなら少しでもいい方向を目指す…そんな思いでした。本当にいろ
いろな小学校で研修をさせていただきました。毎回準備はするものの、言語
教育としての英語指導を小学校の教室の場から学ぶことも多く、また私自身
が公立小学校文化の中での英語教育を考えるためにいろいろな小学校で、研
修だけではなく英語の授業をさせていただきました。2017 年からは文部科学
省からいくつかの仕事の依頼があり、こんな私が…と思いつつ、少しでも日
本の小学校英語教育のお役に立てるのなら、と務めてきましたが、文科省か
らの仕事で、日本の小学校英語の方向性を、何度も再認識したり、何が研修
に必要なのかを具体的に考えることになり、ある意味、小学校英語教育の中
枢を常に見ていられたことは、外大でのリカレントや学部の授業、また様々
な場所での教員研修に大きく役に立ちました。 
 公立小学校での英語教育が公式に始まり、検定教科書を作成することにな
った 2011 年からは検定教科書執筆者グループにも入れていただき、日本で初
めての小学校英語の教科書づくりに関われたのもとても有意義でした。全国
から集まった執筆者の先生がた、また編集部の方々と議論を重ね、作成に 3
年かけ、その初版本が 4 年間使用されました。その間に学習指導要領の改訂
もあり次の教科書作りへと仕事は続き、最初の改訂版がこの 4 月から使用さ
れます。この流れの中で多くのことを学び、このことも私の仕事全般に大き
く役立ちました。

★総文メンバーとしての学部の専門科目、そして小学生の外大訪問 
 総合文化グループのメンバーとして 20 年間お世話になりましたが、素晴ら
しい先生方との関わりでこのグループの皆様に本当に心から感謝です。あり
がとうございました。一人一人の先生方の専門はそれぞれに違いますが、と
ても居心地よく仕事をさせていただきました。 
学部の児童英語教育と小学校英語教育論、小学校英語教育論演習は私の教
育理念の一つである経験から学ぶことを重視して進めました。児童英語は学
校文化の外での子ども達への英語教育を含めたもので、教師にはならずとも
ほとんどの学生は「親」になり、親として小学校英語教育に子どもを通して
関わることを前提に進め、また私塾として英語を子ども達に教えることの可
能性の中での様々な教材や活動を学生らと一緒に作り出すことを中心にして
いました。 
小学校英語教育論、小学校英語教育論演習は、外大から徒歩 15 分の神戸市
立東町小学校の実際の英語の授業に毎週のように学生と共に出かけ、小学校
の教室の中での英語教育を支援するとともに、学校現場についての気づきを
中心に進めました。もちろん、私が小学校英語についてのレクチャーは大学
の教室でいくらでも…と思いながら、目の前に本物の小学生がいる本物の
「教室の場」「英語の時間」に学生たちが参加することが一番の教育だと思
って実施していました。東町小学校では毎年本当に好意的に学生たちと私を
受け入れていただき、英語ができるお兄さん、おねえさんとして、大人の目
が多くなることの利点を生かして子どもの個別的な指導やグループ活動の支
援者として授業に参加していました。 
 2006 年度に東町小学校に定期的に授業支援に行っていたリカレントの大
学院生が、東町小学校の 6 年生の先生たちが、子ども達を外大に連れて行っ
て英語でインタビューをさせたいけれどそんなことは可能だろうか、と相談
に来たことが「小学生の外大訪問」のきっかけです。これはおもしろいかも！
外大がここにあってよかった！と思ってもらえる地域貢献になる、そして英
語でのインタビューとしても、英語以外の外国語が大切にされていることを
知ってもらえる、しかも居ながらにしてできる地域貢献。「1 時間だけでい
いから子ども達が研究室のドアをノックしたら相手をしていただけます
か？」と研究棟の一人一人の先生がたに根回しのお願いをして体制を整えつ
つ、教授会でもお願いをして実現に至りました。それ以降、コロナ禍の 2 年
間を除いて、信頼に足る先生がたと学生たちに支えられながらこの活動はず
っと続いています。先生方、本当にありがとうございます！私がいなくなっ
てもよろしくお願いします！“What’s your dream?”と聞かれたら、大人にだっ

て、大学の先生にだって素敵な夢があることを伝えてください！「本を
10 冊書きたい」とか「世界旅行をしたい」とか「世界一美味しい日本食を食
べたい」とか。先生や学生にインタビューした子ども達はその日、家に帰っ
て必ず、「今日、外大にいって英語でインタビューしたよ。大学の先生たち
も学生さんたちも笑顔で答えてくれたよ！」と家族に話すと思います。外大
がここにあってよかった！と地域の人たちに思ってもらえます。 
 教職課程の「教育実践演習」を長い間担当させていただきました。教職課
程の最終段階だからこそ、「クラスをリードする経験」を重視し、私自身は
「教えない」演習を心掛けて、学生主体の様々な事、ゲストティーチャーへ
の連絡、司会進行、翌週のディスカッションのテーマの設定、ディスカッシ
ョン司会進行、レポート回収と点検等、すべて「教員」としてやるべき事柄
をグループで担当して実施してもらいました。毎年 1 月には学長室に伺い、
歴代学長と受講生たちとの談話の時間を持つことができました。学長先生、
ありがとうございました。この授業は、教えたくなる自分を押さえて、押さ
えて、押さえて…の 4 年生後期の授業でした。 
 
★英作文の授業と私 
 最後に、英作文の授業についてお話しして終わります。小学校英語関係の
授業や教員研修はそれぞれにとっても心に残ります。でもその私の専門とは
一線を画しながら、本当に外大が大好きだったのは英米学科の 1 年生の英作
文を毎年担当させていただいたことが大きく影響しています。ずっとずっと
1 年中添削に追いまくられていた、といっても過言ではないのですが、この
専攻語学の必修科目は学生が「選ぶ」ことができないので、毎年選べないで
中で出会うことになった学生たちが、本当に外大に来て学びが楽しい！と思
える授業を提供する責任感のようなものを感じていました。といっても私に
どれほどのことができたかはわかりませんが。 
通年ということもあり、さまざまなプロジェクトを実施することができま
した。書いたものは必ず口頭でも発表ということにして、パワポやマイクの
使い方、立ち位置と場所が変わっても発表。教室から離れて、三木記念会館
や大会議室、大ホール、「大学は失敗しても大丈夫な場所」と自分のパソコ
ンとプロジェクターとの相性が合わない場合も焦らない、どうにかなる、グ
ループでどうにかする、という授業は学生たちに必要以上の緊張感を与え課
題過多になったかもしれませんが、1 年を通じて最も学生たちと彼らが書い
た英文の添削を通して、また発表までのあれこれを通して対話ができる授業
でした。機器の使い方以外にも、エッセイの構成の仕方、主語を何にするか

で全体のバランスを整えること等、学生たちと対話をしながらの授業は毎週
緊張しつつも本当に楽しく思い出に残る授業です。  
このあいだの 3 月に卒業した学生たちが 1 年生の時、コロナ禍で前期はず
っとリモート授業でした。後期に始めて対面でメンバーがそろった時のあの
学生たちの目の輝きと笑顔、授業時間にキャンパスを皆で散歩し、大ホール
のステージに一人ずつ上がって英語で一言自己紹介。この人達が卒業すると
きに私も退職なのだ、と思ったのを思い出します。彼らは元気に社会へ旅立
ったでしょう！また 1 月に私に花束をくれた学生たちは 2 年生になって、さ
らに充実した外大生活を楽しんでいるに違いありません。 
 
★さようなら、お元気で！ 
 そんなこんなの大好きな外大。「旅人」の私は関西を去って、半世紀ぶり
に「ふるさと」に戻ります。この退職記念号に執筆された先生がた、編集に
携わった先生がた、ありがとうございました。英語教育学専攻の皆様、総合
文化グループの皆様、英米学科の皆様、そのほかの学科の皆様、事務の皆様、
お掃除をして下さった皆様、本当にお世話になりました。感謝一杯の心をこ
こに残してペンを置きます。皆様、お元気で！外大の一層の発展をどこに行

The Case of Slavic Speaking Area” 
 
 
 
 
The second section of this volume consists of papers presented at the international 
workshop titled “Different Perspectives in Minority Language Studies: The Case of 
the Slavic Speaking Area,” which was hosted at the University of Tokyo with 
generous support from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures on 
December 3, 2023. The workshop was organized by the Platform for Explorations in 
Survival Strategies at the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center of Hokkaido University 
and funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science through grants 
“Sociolinguistic Study on Language Contact of Bulgarian Dialects in Romania and 
Moldova” (JP23K12150) and “A Contrastive Study on Aspectuality and Actionality 
in Contemporary Slavic Languages (JP21K13004).” Participants including 
presenters, discussants, and a chair, in the workshop included Yovka Tisheva (Sofia 
University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Bulgaria), Marinela Mladenova (South-West 
University “Neofit Rilski”, Bulgaria), Mihajlo Fejsa (University of Novi Sad, Serbia), 
Ken Sasahara (Reitaku University, Japan), Eleonora Yovkova-Shii (University of 
Toyama, Japan), Kenta Sugai (Hokkaido University, Japan), and Kaname Okano 
(Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, Japan). These scholars approached 
research on Slavic minority languages from various perspectives, which includes 
native speakers, some studying the language of their ethnic communities, and others 
researching minority languages as non-native speakers or “foreigners.” Each 
presentation aimed to reveal problems and dilemmas that are often overlooked. The 
primary objective of the workshop was to share and discuss the challenges and 
dilemmas encountered in minority language research, aiming to explore potential 
solutions. This collection features papers developed by workshop participants, 
expanding on ideas presented and discussed during the workshop or inspired by it.
