はじめに 
 本論文集は、2019 年度神戸市外国語大学研究支援制度 Research Project B 採
択課題「プラグマティズム再考：ジェイムズ兄弟妹
シブリングス
とモダニティ」の成果報
告である。本研究プロジェクトの構成メンバーは、石塚則子（同志社大学）、
中川優子（立命館大学）、三杉圭子（神戸女学院大学）、Jane Thrailkill（ノー
ス・カロライナ大学）、中村仁美（神戸市外国語大学）の 4 名、すべてアメリ
カ文学を専門とし、ジェイムズ兄弟妹、そして彼らと関わりのあったモダニ
ズム作家を専門とする研究者である。 
本研究プロジェクトの目的は、19 世紀末から 20 世紀初頭、アメリカ合衆
国の思想・文学を牽引した兄弟妹――心理学者・哲学者の William James
（1842-1910)、作家 Henry James（1843-1916）、そして日記を残した妹 Alice 
James（1848-1892）の文章を比較検討し、哲学・文学の視点から彼らが生き
た近代（モダニティ）をめぐる諸事情の再評価を試みることである。 
三兄妹についてはそれぞれ個別には数多く論じられてきたが、ウィリアム
とヘンリーの兄弟を同じ俎上で論じたものについては、Ross Posnock の The 
Trial of Curiosity (1991)がある。また本プロジェクトを開始した時点では、兄
弟にアリスを含めた三人を共に論じた研究書は出版されていなかったが、本
研究分担者の一人 Jane Thrailkill が 2022 年に Philosophical Siblings: Varieties of 
Playful Experience in Alice, William, and Henry James を出版し、三者の比較対照
研究に一石を投じた。同書は本研究プロジェクトの成果ではないが、本研究
の刺激になったことはいうまでもない。本研究ではまず「プラグマティズム」
をキーワードにウィリアムの著作を読むところから始めた。研究分担者の専
門はアメリカ文学に限られたため、哲学分野の知識を補うためにアメリカ哲
学および比較文学研究を専門とする研究者に講演をお願いし、理解を深める
ことに努めた。 
2019 年度は計画通りに読書会を重ね、11 月には同志社大学で第一回講演会
を開催、「ウィリアム・ジェイムズのプラグマティズム」と題して新茂之氏（同
志社大学）にご講演いただいた。しかしながら、2020 年度からは新型コロナ
感染症によるパンデミックの影響により、研究会を定期的に行うことが難し
くなり、研究期間の延長願を提出すると同時に、オンライン会議やメールの
やりとりをしながら各自研究を進めた。第二回講演会を開催できたのは 2022
年 3 月、「What is a “Pragmatised” Language? : the James Brothers' Articulations of 
“Experience”」と題して、齊藤弘平氏（青山学院大学）に Zoom 形式でご講演

いただいた。2023 年には対面での研究会が叶い、3 月に第三回講演会を神戸
女学院大学で開催、「『宗教的経験の諸相』とドイツ思想」と題して廳茂氏（神
戸大学）のご講演を拝聴した。 
本研究成果論文集には、ご講演いただいた 3 名の研究者の方々にもご寄稿
をお願いしたところ、全員ご快諾下さり、このような形で学際的研究成果を
