Impersonal Construction with the Noun ‘Thing’ in Subject Position in Pwo Karen
Get PDFapplication/pdfPwo Karen has an impersonal construction, in which chə, a noun meaning ‘thing’, assumes the subject position without the original lexical meaning. In this paper, clauses exhibiting this feature are called “chə-clauses”. The usages of chə-clauses can be classified into four types, considering the motivations with which they are used, as follows: (i) the agent is generic, (ii) information about the agent is irrelevant, (iii) the clause denotes a meteorological phenomenon, and (iv) a physiological/psychological state is uncontrollable. Usages (i) and (ii) are discourse motivated, while (iii) and (iv) are semantics motivated. The functions of chə-clauses can be considered to be related to agent defocusing, and Usages (i) and (ii) can be seen as covering the lower three rows of the cline of agent defocusing proposed by Sansò (2006).慶應義塾大学departmental bulletin pape

A Note on the Paleo-Ethnoherpetology of Giant Softshell Turtles (Trionychidae) in Kra-Dai and Austronesian
Get PDFapplication/pdfAmong the many and varied herpetofauna of China and Southeast Asia, two softshell turtles Refetus swinhoei and Pelochelys cantorii, stand out due to their enormous size. These turtles are linguistically differentiated from smaller species of the Trionychidae family in Chinese (yuan vs. bie) as well as in some Kra-Dai languages (top vs. faa). Cognates for top are limited to Central Southwestern Tai of northern Vietnam and Houa Phanh (Laos), Hlai on Hainan, and are found in Austronesian languages of northern Luzon and Taiwan. A Sino-Vietnamese lexeme giải ~ giài likely derives from Chinese xī ~ xí MC *xɦjyaj or *ɣwɛj meaning ‘sea turtle’ (Pulleyblank), and is not an indigenous Austroasiatic taxon. The distribution of linguistic forms for large softshell turtles is compared with that of the turtles themselves, and based on this examines pre- and proto- historical relationships inferred from that distribution, especially with respect to Kra-Dai and Austronesian linguistic stocks.departmental bulletin pape
