岡本先生を送る言葉

神戸市外国語大学に在籍して早 10 年、岡本先生には大変お世話になりま
した。正直に申しますと、岡本先生には謝罪と感謝の気持ちが入り混じって
おります。 
メールの返信が 1 年滞ったり、授業ではろくな予習・復習をしていなかっ
たり、紹介していただいた仕事であまり芳しい成果を上げられなかったり、
岡本先生に謝罪すべきことが尽きることなく思い出されます。自分が気づい
ていないだけで、他にもあるかと思うと胃が痛くて仕方ありません。 
加えて、岡本先生の研究者としての功績を語るには、不甲斐ないことに、
自分は未熟です。しかし、不肖の一学生ではありますが、先生の研究姿勢や
言動は心に響いていました。岡本先生にとっては、日常的な交流の一コマに
過ぎなかったのかもしれませんが、先生の言葉は心に深く残っているのです。 
紙幅を謝罪で埋め尽くすよりも、学部時代に私の心の支えとなったエピソ
ードで以て、送る言葉の代わりとさせていただければと思います。 
 
2014 年 3 月、留年していた私の進級が無事に決まったとき、大学構内で岡
本先生とお話しする機会がありました。そのとき、先生からいただいた「君
は去年とは見違えるようになったね。想像以上でした」という言葉は、以降
のロシア語学習のモチベーションとなりました。 
また、学部 3 年生の最後の授業、ベールキン物語『棺桶屋』の翻訳課題で、
推敲もせずに提出してしまった「マジのマジ？」「もちのロンさ」というふざ
けた訳を目にしても、先生は、「訳のカジュアルさはともかくとして、大意は
取れている。つまり、正しくロシア語を読めています」と褒めてくださった
のです。 
加えて、岡本先生の研究への真摯な姿勢も、とても印象に残っています。
あれは、研究者志望の I 君と岡本先生の研究室を訪れた時のことです。当時、
岡本先生は「その研究をしてどうするの。大学院に進みたいなら、調べて終

わってしまう研究ではよくないよ」と滔々と語られました。当時は厳しいこ
とを言われたと思っていたのですが、今になってあの言葉の重さをしみじみ
と感じています。あの時、先生が厳しい姿勢で話されたのは、学生への優し
さと研究への真摯さ故なのだと。 
 
学生への優しさと研究への真摯さは、先生の授業にも表れていました。 
「ロシア語学入門」の授業では、ロシア語の音韻論に始まり、先生のご専
門であるロシア語史についても教えておられました。ロシア語学特殊講義で
は、古代教会スラブ語を教えておられました。各授業で配布してくださった
授業資料を、先生は学生のことを考えて作られたのだと存じます。でなけれ
ば、一授業のために、詳細な説明と資料をハンドブックとしてまとめ上げる
ことなどできません。 
岡本先生が授業中に用意してくださったハンドブックや資料は、未だに話
題にのぼります。特に、S 先輩とは岡本先生の話題で花が咲きます。 
 かつて岡本ゼミに所属していた S 先輩は、在学時、卒論を書き上げるため、
うちに泊まりこんでいました。そんな S 先輩は、岡本先生から渡された資料
をいつも読んでいました。そして、週末には、ロシア語の論文を二人で読み
ながら、岡本先生の授業資料や発言メモと格闘し、岡本先生の発言の意図は
どこにあったのか、卒論を進めるためのヒントが資料のどこかに隠れていな
いか、こたつに潜り込んで話し合いました。あの冬ほど、毎日のように岡本
先生のことを話していた時期はありません。 
 今でも、旧友たちと会うと、先生の授業、ふと出る口癖や仕草にはじまり、
皆が思い出話を持ち寄ってきます。 
 
岡本先生、ご教授していただき、本当にありがとうございました。心より
の感謝を申し上げたいと存じます。いつの日か、先生が示してくださった優
しさと真摯さとを、ロシア語を学ぶ後輩たちに還元できたらと思います。 
 
教授という職を退職されても、これまでと変わらぬご健康とご活躍を心よ
り願っております。

A Journey “on great blue wings”: 
Years with Farrah-sensei

It was a hot summer day in August 2007 when I first met Farrah-sensei, here at 
Kobe City University of Foreign Studies. The lecture room—the one on the second floor 
of Daini-gakusha, if I remember correctly—was bustling with high school students in 
various school uniforms, all flipping through their university brochures that had been 
handed out in the briefing sessions before the campus tour. Sitting in the middle of the 
lecture room twice the size of a high school classroom, I wondered what a professor of 
poetry would be like. When Farrah-sensei entered the room, my eyes were caught by his 
figure walking very slowly, step by step, looking straight ahead. When he looked at us 
and began his mock lecture, he talked to us as slowly as he walked. Though the subject 
of the lecture—talking about one’s favorite holiday in English—was simple enough, 
what deeply impressed me was the way he carefully articulated each word when he gave 
instructions, and particularly the way he put emphasis when he asked us to speak in a 
“complete sentence.” The softly stressed sounds of “complete sentence” came to 
resonate in me for the rest of my school days, somehow entangled with a burgeoning 
interest in studying poetry in English, which, I vaguely guessed, was related to his 
serious attitude toward language and communication. 
Little did I dream at that time that, about fifteen years later, I would be sitting here 
in my office 310 as a lecturer of American poetry. It is entirely thanks to Farrah-sensei’s 
passionate guidance over the years that I am again able to pursue my interest in poetry 
and literature at Gaidai. In the room diagonally forward left, which was his room only a 
few months ago, I and my fellow students spent invaluable time reading, writing, and 
discussing poetry under his untiring support, warm encouragement and great patience, all 
of which find no match elsewhere. Farrah-sensei valued every one of written or uttered

words more than anyone I knew. His insight and unparalleled seriousness about poetic 
text have had a lasting impact on countless undergraduate students and graduate students, 
and I’m not the only student who received his fervent guidance of writing and reading in 
the graduate level and gained an appointment in the teaching profession.  
    Despite his dedication to teaching and other university work, and a series of medical 
challenges he was faced with in the later years of his career, Farrah-sensei could put his 
time and energy into his vocation as a poet. To have a supervisor who is a devoted writer 
himself is special. Farrah-sensei’s words have been the window through which I have 
been repeatedly taken out of myself—short-sighted and easily preoccupied with minute 
details—into unbounded nature, just as the “great blue wings” in his poem “Java 
Kingfishers” does. When we read his poems, we are delivered into the landscape flooded 
with contingent patterns and the wild pleasures of encountering them. It is, for example, 
“between / the river and the house” (ll. 2-3) where “The tree is tree and we / stand with 
it”, where ripe persimmons are waiting for him and his landlady to pick them up 
(“Persimmon Picking” ll. 1-2). As his poem “Tulips (Wisteria)” suggests, it is yet at the 
same time a place where a “metaphor” is to be “removed” incessantly and “the meaning 
// undone” (ll. 3-4). I love the tulips that Farrah-sensei paints in his rainy poem—which 
at once rejects and welcomes any color—more than I like those haunting forms of tulips 
presented in the poems by Sylvia Plath, Denise Levertov, and James Schuyler that we 
enjoyed reading together.  
As I look back to the precious days when I was working on poetry with 
Farrah-sensei, I often think of Elizabeth Bishop’s essay titled “Efforts of Affection,” 
where the poet recollects her visits to the apartment of her mentor, Marianne Moore, in 
Brooklyn. The description of the “‘old-fashioned,’ but even more, otherworldly” 
atmosphere of Moore’s apartment in this memoir reminds me of what I perceived in the 
quiet and slow time flowing in Farrah-sensei’s office. “Yet never left Cumberland Street 
without feeling happier,” Bishop recalls: “uplifted, even inspired, determined to be good, 
to work harder, not to worry about what other people thought, never to try to publish 
anything until I thought I’d done my best with it, no matter how many years it took—or 
never to publish at all” (Prose, 408). The exhilaration that filled Bishop on her way home 
from Moore’s place always pleases me because it is exactly the same as what I felt after 
every intense supervision with Farrah-sensei. If someday I could do someone the same 
favor, nothing would be happier for my life as a lecturer.

そしてコロナ禍とロシア・ウクライナ危機

岡本崇男先生は1984年に助手として神戸市外国語大学ロシア学科で教壇
に上られた。それから36年間にわたって教鞭を執られた本学を御退官され、
名誉教授となられたのは2020年3月のことであった。岡本先生の御退官号に載
せる言葉を書いている今は2022年3月である。そしてこの2年間は誰の記憶に
も残る忘れ難い時となった。この間、岡本先生の御退官に実感が伴わなかっ
たのは、コロナ禍で岡本先生の最終講義が中止になったことに加え、オンラ
イン授業や自分のサバチカル等もあって大学で教員にも学生にも会わないこ
とが「当たり前」になり、それは、なんとなく、岡本先生にお会いする機会
が減ったのもそのせいだと私に思い込ませるに十分だった。今、これを書く
ことによって、岡本先生の御退官を直視せざるを得ず、一言で言って、とて
つもなく寂しい。 
岡本先生は私にとって大学時代の恩師であり、外大の同僚であり、外大ロ
シア学科の同窓生という共通項も持つが、何と言ってもやはり、岡本先生は
私の先生であり続けた。それは2014年以降、私も母校のロシア学科で教鞭を
執ることになり表面上は「同僚」となってからも同様で、とりわけ、外大ロ
シア学科という一つの共同体を健全にまとめ維持し、内外的に発展させるこ
とに尽力されてきた岡本先生の地道で多岐に亘る活動から学ばせて頂くこと
は日々多かった。例えば「いつのころからか、週に二度は共同研究室で何人
かのスタッフが集まって昼食を取りながら半分ロシア語、半分日本語でお喋
りしながら短い休憩時間を過ごすのが習慣になっていた」（『神戸外大論叢』
54(7), 2003:3）というひとつのдобрая традицияを岡本先生は継続されていた。
コロナ禍以前の常であった共同研究室での月・金のランチは、非常勤の先生
方やモスクワ大学の交換教員の先生と教育や学生の問題を共有し、ざっくば
らんに意見交換、情報交換をする場であり、それは教員間の風通しを良くし、
共同体の構成員としての意識作りに役立つとともに、純粋に楽しく居心地の

良い空間であった。対外的にも、岡本先生は日露学長会議に参加され、神戸
外大ロシア学科のプレゼンスを国内外に示されてこられた。これらのことは、
カリキュラムや授業設計に比べると一見些細なことであるようだが、持続可
能な「神戸外大ロシア学科」のアイデンティティ作りには欠かせないものだ
と、コロナ禍で人が繋がる「リアル」な場が失われた中、そして日露の学術
教育協力の行方が見通せなくなった今、改めて強く意識するようになった。 
岡本先生の御研究の主眼は、中世ロシア文献学における言語の静態的側面
と、東スラヴ語発達史としての言語の動態的側面に向けられてきた。後者は
ロシア標準文章語の成立過程でもある。一方、ロシア語に対する私の学術的
関心は大学時代から現代ロシア語一辺倒で（正直に言えば、手一杯で）、“過
去”の古いロシア語はその歴史の長さとスラヴ言語学の裾野の広さに怖気づ
き敬遠してきたのであるが、研究者の道を歩み始めてすぐに後悔することに
なる。親の恩は年をとってからわかると言うが、師の教えの本質が今の自分
の研究にどれほど密接に結びついており、どれだけ価値があるものなのか、
不肖の私も遅ればせながら自覚し、学び直しの毎日を送っている。岡本先生
もそのことをよくご存じで、事ある毎に現代ロシア語の言語現象の背景を詳
らかに解説して下さり―その意味で毎週のランチ・ミーティングは私にとっ
て教育や研究における学びの場でもあった―、また、現代をちょっと外れる
と自信が無くなる私に気前良く資料を提供して下さったり、アドバイスを下
さったりと、教育でも研究でもとにかく助けて頂いた。赴任してすぐの2015
年には岡本先生が全訳されたアレクサンドル・イサチェンコのロシア語史も
頂いた。これは大変貴重な御労作であり、本邦のロシア語学・スラヴ語学研
究者にとって日本語で読める基礎文献としての価値を有するもので、私だけ
が恩恵に与っているのは申し訳なく、出版の機会があることを切望せずには
いられない。  
そして現在、不幸にも勃発したロシア・ウクライナ危機においてロシア語
とウクライナ語が一面的な敵対的対立関係に置かれる風潮もある中、この地
域の言語社会と話し手の言語意識の変遷の重層的な歴史は、岡本先生の包括
的で実証的な東スラヴ語発達史の御研究によって一層感慨深く受け止められ
る。ロシア語の成立過程が、諸々の時空間における話し手の営みの積み重ね
という歴史的文脈で、ウクライナ語を始めとするスラヴ諸語とどのように密
接な関り合いを持ってきたものであったかという事実を思い起こさないわけ
にはいかない。人々が紡いできた歴史の上に現在の姿があると知ることは、
言語のみならず、人や社会に内在する多様性と奥深さ、相似と相違の根源的
理解につながる。物事を多角的視野から学びその多面性を理解する態度が学

生に育まれるよう、岡本先生のバトンを受け継ぎ、外大ロシア学科の数々の
добрая традицияを大切に守っていきたいと思う。岡本先生の最終講義は『授
業で話せなかったこと・話さなかったこと』という非常に意味深なタイトル
であった。現在、楠ケ丘会と楠露会の会長となられた岡本先生によってこの
幻の講義が実現することも夢ではないと信じたい。
