Studies of the Taxonomy of Thrips (Thysanoptera) of floricultural importance of Kashmir Region
Thrips are tiny, slender insects with fringed wings. Being universal in
there occurrence, they frequently inhabit flowers of different kinds, grass
sheaths, tender leaves etc. They have attracted the attention of entomologist,
due to their ability to act as vectors of certain bacterial, fungal and viral
diseases of plants. Thrips are also the serious pests of crops. The present study
was conducted both in the fields and in laboratory. Thrips were collected from
different flowers, which include Dandelion, Daisy, Dahlia, Chrysanthmum,
Lotus, Lilly, Roses, Gladiolus, Zinnia, Saffron, Sunflower, Marigold, Tulips
etc. The common methods employed for collection are.
1. Hand picking --the individuals from the plants by using a small brush.
2. Beating the foliage on to a white background, preferably a sheet of stiff
white paper , and picking the material with a fine camel hair brush.
The collected material is preserved in a small collection tube containing
50-70%alcohol.The stored material after dehydration in 95-98% alcohol is
cleared in xylene and mounted in xylol-canada balsm. The mounted specimen
are identified and labelled with its original data. The specimens identified
include the species of Thrips, Franklinella, Megelurothrips, Aeolothrips
Haplothrips etc.
An illustrated key is provided to families of sub-orders Terebrantia and
Tubulifera. The families of Terebrantia are Aeolothripidae and Thripidae, the
former has ovipositor curved upwards while latter has ovipositor curved
downwards. Key is provided to the species of Aeolothripidae, illustrated key is
also provided to the species of Thripidae, these inclde, Thrips tabaci, Thrips
flavus, Thrips trehernei, Thrips simplex, Thrips coloratus, Thrips nigropilosus,
Thrips hawaiiensis. The genus Thrips is the second largest genus in the Thysanoptera. Thrips tabaci is highly polyphagous and has been recorded from Tulips in kashmir valley Thrips tabaci is unusual within the genus in lacking
red pigment around the ocelli. Thrips flavus are probably the wide spread
species; have been found to infest the Tulips, Saffron, Daisies and Lotus in
kashmir valley. Key is also provided to two species of Franklinella, these are Franklinella intonsa, F. schultzi. The invasive pest species F. intonsa were
abundent on flowers of Lilly
Taxonomical Studies on Faunistic Composition Of Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera:Chalcidoidea) of Kashmir Valley
The Super family Chalcidoidea, commonly referred to as ‘chalcids’
belongs to the insect order Hymenoptera. It constitutes one of the largest
groups under this order, with over 22, 000 known species and an estimated
total diversity of any where from 100,000 to 500, 000 species, meaning a vast
majority of chalcid fauna yet to be discovered and described from the world.
Most of the species are parasitoids of other insects, attacking the egg, larval or
pupal stages of at least 12 different insect orders, including Lepidoptera,
Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, as well as two orders of
Arachnida, and also one family of nematodes. Although a majority of chalcids
are entomophagous (parasitic), a few species are phytophagous, whose larvae
feed inside seeds, stems and galls. Chalcids are generally beneficial to humans
as this group keeps various crop pests under control. A variety of chalcid
species have been utilized under a number of bio control programmes through
out the world

Relation Of Employee Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction In Select Private Medical Care Centers In Kashmir Valley
Much has been written about the need to offer satisfying work
environment and there have been numerous investigations of the job
satisfaction construct (Brown and Peterson, 1993). There is ethical value
clearly in a company creating job satisfaction, but its numerical value is
unproven. Since the provision of job satisfaction involves cost, there
should be evidence of a mitigating return. One would expect a satisfied
employee to generate satisfied customers who will, as a consequence,
be loyal.This study to estimate employee perception of job satisfaction.Estimate perception of patient satisfaction and Empirically testing the nature of the relationship between
employee job satisfaction and patient satisfaction.Universe for this study has been the employees and patients of
Modern hospital and Ramzana hospital of the Kashmir valley. To collect
data both primary as well as secondary sources have been used. The
primary data was collected with the help of pre-tested questionnaires so
as to ensure the relevance and consistency of various items and
statements in the questionnaires. Simple random sampling method has
been used to collect the primary data. 100 employees (50 each) and 200
patients (100 each) from both medical care centres comprise the sample
for the study. The data thus collected was analysed and interpreted with
the help of mean scores, standard deviations, correlation and regression
analysis and t-tests have been applied wherever necessary to arrive at
the dependable conclusions. The data was analysed with the help of
SPSS package and Minitab
Application of Environmental Isotopes for Identification of Possible Recharge Areas of Alluvial Springs of Vishaw Catchment in Kashmir Himalaya
Five alluvium controlled springs were selected for hydrogeochemical and isotope study of Vishoaw
watershed of Kashmir Himalayas, India. Hydrogeochemical study showed that Ca2+, Mg2+ and HCO - were
the dominant chemical species in water samples. The order of hydrochemical water types identified
is Ca-Mg-HCO3 > Ca-HCO3 > Na-Mg-HCO3 and hybrid type. Ca-Mg-HCO3 and Ca-HCO3 types of spring water
resulted from the dissolution of carbonate lithology. Na-Mg-HCO3 and hybrid water types followed by
surface water owes to the interaction of water with multiple lithologies, resulted from weathering
of host silicate rocks. The groundwater samples showed a narrow variation in stable isotope content
and are clustered above and very close to GMWL, indicating that groundwater has not been greatly
fractionated by kinetic evaporation, except Qoimohnag, with δ18O value of - 6.9 ‰ which may be due
to the mixing of groundwater with recent precipitation. The high deuterium excess of surface and
groundwater suggests western disturbances as the source of the recharging precipitation. The mean
isotopic values of groundwater were depleted in heavier isotopes than precipitation. The study
suggested that the alluvial springs are recharged by the stream of the catchment
Management of the elm bark beetle, scolytus kashmirensis Schedl Infesting elm trees (ulmus spp.) In Kashmir
Experiments were conducted to determine the influence of cultural and chemical control measures of
elm bark beetle, Scolytus kashmirensis Schedl on elm trees (Ulmus spp.) in Kashmir. Seasonal
pruning reduced infestation of the pest significantly; spring and autumn pruning reduced it by
1.17% and
65.77% respectively. However, sanitation reduced the infestation rate only by 15.91% and 27.61% in
two treated elm plots. The efficacy of the screened chemicals at different concentrations against
the pest varied significantly among each other. 1.0% concentrates of all the screened chemicals
were effective with Dichlorvos ranking first in efficacy against the pest. Dichlorvos was efficient
followed by a mixture of Monocrotophos and Carbendazim. However, Imidacloprid was least effective
followed by Endosulfan. Technically 0.05% concentrate of these chemicals was ineffective whereas
0.1% solution controlled the pest population considerably. The results showed that 1.0% solution of
Dichlorvos (causing a mortality of 92.70%) or a mixture of Monocrotophos and Carbendazim (mortality
86.33%)
could be used to control the infestation rate of S. kashmirensis effectively
Curriculum of Graduate Courses in Library and Information Science Schools of Northern India: An Analysis
The aim of the study is to investigate the course structure in the
curriculum of Library and Information Science (LIS) schools in Northern part of
India at graduate level.
Design/methodology/approach: Questionnaire was designed to get the data
from the institutions. When response rate was low, curriculum prevailing in the
institutions was either downloaded from their respective websites or a hardcopy
was collected from the departments personally. Thirteen institutions are included
in this study.
Findings: Data collected from the selected LIS departments when analyzed,
reveals that there is disparity existing in the curriculum adopted by these schools.
Same papers taught in these schools have different nomenclatures.
Research limitations/implications: The research restricted to a limited number of
institutions presents the pattern of Library and Information Science education in
Northern India only.
Originality/value: The research, leads to the fact that instead of heterogeneity,
homogeneity in curriculum is the demand of the day in order to impart qualitative
education in the field of LIS
Hindu-Muslim Relations in District Anantnag and Srinagar Kashmir (1947-1989)
The active synthesis of divergent ideas woven into a well knit fabric dyed with nativization has remained the cardinal feature of Kashmiri cultural setting. Like other cultures Kashmiri culture has never been homogenous. Broadly speaking there were two cultural categories. One was related to the corridors of power, political elite, religious discourses and the state philosophy. The other category was the culture of masses. To maintain hegemony, state always promoted a discourse in discursive sprit, where religion, justice, duty and nation etc. have been harnessed to serve the agenda of segregation. On the other hand the culture promoted by the common masses has always been based on, solidarity, compassion, sense of one-ness and allocation for differences.
The divisive cultural trends in Kashmir have always emanated from urban centers where stake holders in power apparatus used every finger and fork to safeguard their interest. On the other hand culture in rural areas of Kashmir has always been accommodative, common and diverse. From a closer analysis Kashmiri villages by and large during the period of our study were “pretty republics” governed by the unwritten codes of commonality, social sharing and tolerance. The predominately Muslim population in Kashmir willingly tolerated the minorities especially Kashmiri Pandits. As villages have predominately agrarian economy which calls for greater social sharing leading villager to accommodate the different creeds. The people professing Hindu and Muslim faiths in rural Kashmir together forged the common grounds based on exchange of services, and good neighborliness sharing each other‟s joys and sorrows despite the two irreconcilable ideological persuasions
Survey and screening of Ambri in Kashmir
The present investigation entitled “Survey and screening of Ambri in Kashmir” was carried out in order to survey available germplasm and to obtain information on the magnitude of variability of several morphological and horticultural traits; predict heritability and genetic advance and estimate divergence. The survey was conducted in three districts of Kashmir valley namely Shopian, Pulwama and Budgam wherein forty genotypes of Ambri were covered in the course of survey and screening (UPOV).Wide variability in various descriptive and quantitative characteristics was recorded in the genotypes under study.
Analysis of variance revealed presence of significant variability among the genotypes for all the traits. G x E interaction was also significant. Heritability estimates were high for all the traits. High heritability along with maximum genetic gain (% of mean) was recorded for yield tree-1.Length breadth ratio, fruit size and TSS showed positive significant association with yield . Path analysis revealed that maximum positive direct contribution to yield came from length breadth ratio. Significant positive in direct contribution came from all the traits except length breadth ratio.
Analysis of divergence, in forty Ambri genotypes using Mahalanobis D2 statistics revealed high significance, while these genotypes got grouped into five clusters in pooled analysis. Inter cluster distance was maximum between cluster I- and-III in pooled analysis. The maximum contribution to divergence came from yield tree-1 followed by acidity. The existing diversity in Ambri can be gain fully exploited either by the way of direct selection of individual genotypes or as prospective parents in hybridization programme, in light of high magnitude of genetic advance and heritability (b.s.) in various traits of horticultural interest. Of the forty genotypes screened, two genotypes have been found excellent in terms of quality and yield in addition to other positive features
