Emotional Intelligence And Personality Traits As Predictors Of Life Satisfaction: A Study Of Adolescents, Adults And Aged Persons
The present study examined the extent to which Emotional Intelligence and Personality traits predict Life Satisfaction. Secondly, the study investigated the association between i) Emotional Intelligence & Life Satisfaction ii) Personality traits & Life Satisfaction among three different populations -Adolescents (100), Adults (102) and Aged (100). The mean age of the adolescent, adult and aged participant group was 17.28, 28 and 61.45 respectively. All the three participant groups were chosen from different areas of district, Srinagar by using purposive sampling method. Emotional Intelligence and Personality traits were the predictor variables while Life Satisfaction was the criterion variable in the present study. Instruments used were SWLS (Diener et al, 1985), NEO-FFI-3 (Costa & McCrae, 1992) and MEII (Mangal & Mangal, 2004). Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis revealed that various factors of emotional intelligence were positively correlated with life satisfaction whereas most of the personality traits showed significant (both positive and negative) correlations with life satisfaction in all the three participant groups. The present study indicated that some of the Emotional Intelligence (EI) factors emerged as the significant predictors of life satisfaction whereas among the personality traits Conscientiousness (C) and Neuroticism (N) emerged as the significant predictors of life satisfaction in the adolescent and aged participant groups respectively
Psychological Determinants of Drug Addiction: A Study of Kashmiri youth
Substance abuse has been considered as one of the alarming problem throughout the world. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) World Drug Report, 2012 estimates that between 153 million and 300 million people age 15–64 used illicit drugs at least once in the past year and attributes 1 in every 100 adult deaths annually to illicit drug use. The field of psychology has also witnessed momentum over the research on psychological perspectives of substance abuse/drug addiction during the past two decades. Several psychological factors have been found associated with substance dependence or drug addiction. The present study attempts to find out the relationship of drug addiction/ substance dependence with personality dimensions of neuroticism and extraversion; impulsiveness and subjective wellbeing. The study also attempts to predict the significant psychological factors contributing to drug addiction/Substance dependence. Drug addicts/substance dependents who join de-addiction centres were compared with those who don‘t join de-addiction centres on personality dimensions (extraversion, neuroticism); impulsiveness and subjective wellbeing. The study also examines the self reported reasons of drug addicts/substance dependents for joining de-addiction centres or for not joining de-addiction centres and continuing drug use. One hundred and fifty male participants were selected in the study. One group of subjects (N=50) were taken from different drug de-addiction centres. Another group of drug addicts (N=100), include those who don‘t join drug de-addiction centres and were taken from different areas of Srinagar. Drug addiction/substance dependence was assessed using Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test- V 3.0 (ASSIST-V 3.0); Personality (neuroticism and extraversion) were assessed using Modified version of Eysenck's Maudsley‘s Personality Inventory (MPI 1959- S.S Jalota and S.D Kapoor); Impulsivity was assessed using Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Version -11 (BIS-11) & Subjective wellbeing by Subjective Wellbeing Inventory –SUBI (Nagpal and sell, 1992). Apart from these tools a self designed semi structured interview schedule was used to collect the responses of the subjects pertaining to their reasons for joining de-addiction centre or reason for not joining de-addiction and continuing drug use. The data collected was analyzed by using appropriate statistical techniques like Pearson‘s product moment correlation, multiple regression analysis, t-test and also content analysis for qualitative date. The results
showed significant positive correlation between drug addiction/ substance dependence and neuroticism (r=0.269, P ≤ 0.01). However, the relationship between drug addiction/substance dependence and Extraversion was found negative but insignificant. Overall impulsiveness (r = 0.204, p ≤ 0.05) and two of it‘s sub factors i;e Attentional impulsiveness (r = 0.230, P ≤ 0.01) and non-planning impulsiveness (r = 0.183, p ≤ 0.05) showed significant positive correlation with drug addiction/ substance dependence. However motor impulsiveness (a sub factor of impulsiveness) showed insignificant correlation with drug addiction/substance dependence. Subjective wellbeing and it‘s factorial dimensions showed insignificant correlation with drug addiction/ substance dependence. Neuroticism was found as the only significant predictor of drug addiction/ substance dependence. The results also showed significant difference between drug addicts/substance dependents who join de-addiction centres and drug addicts/substance dependents who don‘t join de-addiction centres on extraversion (t=2.574, p ≤ 0.05). However no such difference was found between the two groups on Neuroticism. Significant difference was also found between drug addicts/ substance dependents who join de-addiction centres and drug addicts/ substance dependents who don‘t join de-addiction centres on motor impulsiveness (t=2.10, p ≤ 0.05).However the difference between the two groups on overall impulsiveness and two of it‘s sub factors (Attentional impulsiveness and Non-planning impulsiveness) was not found statistically significant. Significant difference was found between drug addicts/substance dependents who join de-addiction centres and drug addicts who don‘t join de-addiction centres on general wellbeing positive affect (t=1.986, p ≤ 0.05), confidence in coping (t = 2.240, p ≤ 0.05), primary group concern (t= 2.486, p ≤ 0.05), and perceived ill health (t= 2.890, p ≤ 0.01) dimension of subjective wellbeing. However the difference between these two groups on the rest of the factorial dimensions of subjective wellbeing and overall SWB was not found statistically significant. Health concern, dignity of self and their families, and family concern /family pressure were found as the major self reported reasons for joining de-addiction centres. Denial, feeling in control, and recreational drug use were found as the major self reported reasons for not joining de-addiction centres and continuing drug use. Most of the results of the study were found in tune with the findings of the previous relevant research. The limitations of the study and the suggestions for future research have been mentioned

Mark Sequences In Digraphs
In Chapter 1, we present a brief introduction of digraphs and some def-
initions. Chapter 2 is a review of scores in tournaments and oriented graphs.
Also we have obtained several new results on oriented graph scores and we
have given a new proof of Avery's theorem on oriented graph scores. In chap-
ter 3, we have introduced the concept of marks in multidigraphs, non-negative
integers attached to the vertices of multidigraphs. We have obtained several
necessary and su cient conditions for sequences of non-negative integers to
be mark sequences of some r-digraphs. We have derived stronger inequalities
for these marks. Further we have characterized uniquely mark sequences in
r-digraphs. This concept of marks has been extended to bipartite multidi-
graphs and multipartite multidigraphs in chapter 4. There we have obtained
characterizations for mark sequences in these types of multidigraphs and we
have given algorithms for constructing corresponding multidigraphs. Chap-
ter 5 deals with imbalances and imbalance sequences in digraphs. We have
generalized the concept of imbalances to oriented bipartite graphs and have
obtained criteria for a pair of integers to be the pair of imbalance sequences
of some oriented bipartite graph. We have shown the existence of an oriented
bipartite graph whose imbalance set is the given set of integers
Genotypic variants of MYP2 Locus: Analysis for association with High Myopia
Identification of genes involved in the progression of myopia is largely hampered by
challenges inherent in mapping genes due to high prevalence, genetic heterogeneity,
and wide clinical spectrum of the condition. Genetic mapping studies have identified
at least 24 chromosomal loci suspected of harboring genes for myopia progression,
MYP1–MYP24 of which MYP2 is considered to be a strong candidate gene locus.
Environmental and genetic factors together are attributed to explain the spectrum of
geographical and population dependent variations in the incidence of high myopia.
Incidently researchers have come up with controversial results with regard to the
association of MYP2 locus despite a varied spectrum of polymorphic changes
reported in the genes harboured by the locus. The controversy is largely attributed to
population heterogeneity. The purity of genetic traits associated with Kashmiri
population is likely to minimize the influence of mixed risk/resistance alleles to
reliably establish their potential association.
One of the three SNPs observed in codon 10 of TGFβ1 showed a significant
difference between patients and control subjects (rs1982073: p genotype=0.003, p
allele=0.001). There were no statistically significant differences between patients and
control subjects for the other two SNPs, rs1800471 at codon 25 and a novel variant at
codon 52.
In TGIF1 three adjacent novel intronic variations (T>C/A; p=0.04: T>G; p=0.02:
G>C; p=0.01) and one novel missense sequence variation G26A (p = <0.001) were
observed that show possible association with high myopia. G26A also segregates with
gender and degree of myopia (p = 0.05).
DLGAP1 gene revealed a total of two polymorphic variations among which G507A
(P=1) was novel and one reported polymorphic variation G517A with a significant
(P=<0.001) occurrence in affected population. G517A show association with gender
and degree of myopia (p=<0.0001).
A previously reported variant T451C observed in EMILIN2 gene did not appear to
associate with disease phenotype.
MYOM1 showed five polymorphic variations; two in coding region (G333A;
P=A; P=T & C>G; P= < 0.001) that potentially segregate with the disease phenotype. G333A shows a
statistically significant association with gender (p = 0.01) and degree of myopia (p =
0.01) while G341C does not associate with any of the clinical parameters. Among
intronic variations, G>T (rs55779127) and C>G (rs8096379) showed significant
association with degree of myopia (p=<0.0001 & p=<0.001). The assessment of the ITASSER
predicted protein structure showed change in energy for almost all mutants
compared to wild type proteins. The results are indicative that the energy changes due
to these polymorphic variations may have significant functional consequences
