Geographical Distribution of Diseases on the Basis of Regional Disparities in Socio-Economic Parameters of Jammu Division, J&K State.
Health, or lack of health, was once merely attributed to biological or natural conditions. Medical geographers and sociologists have established through their research that the spread of diseases is heavily influenced by the socio-economic status of individuals, ethnic traditions or beliefs and other cultural factors (Kevin, 2002). So biologists and medical scientists are concentrating their attention on the problems of human health caused by socio-economic variations, malnutrition and environmental pollution brought about by the changes in ecology. The levels of health and diseases vary between places and over time. At present, there is a pronounced awareness of importance of understanding the geographic aspects of human health. This awareness is a part of an overall attempt within the discipline of geography to strengthen conceptual horizons. It is part of the research for a broader scope which has evolved over past few decades from mere descriptive to process oriented explanations (Akhtar, 1982). Thus, the medical geography is the systematic study of diseases, distributed over space and over time, and analyses the etiology of human diseases in relation to climate, soils, drainage, agriculture in general and socio-economic factors in particular.Digital copy of ThesisUniversity of Kashmi
Assessment of the Anthropogenic Stress on the Characteristics of Dal Lake Watershed: A Spatio-Temporal analysis.
Despite so many uses and merits of wetlands of Kashmir valley, water ecosystems are today very much threatened by pollution. Some of the water bodies, especially lakes and streams, are shrinking in size. It is all due to large scale biotic pressure viz., population explosion, both human beings and livestock, over exploitation of resources, siltation, encroachments, weed infestation and reclamation for agriculture. Water deterioration is the burning problem of the present world. The deterioration or dwindling of Lake Ecosystems has been increasing at an alarming rate, due to various ecological stresses caused largely by the activities of man. The main cause of the deterioration of lake water is the continuous inflow of inorganic sediments and nutrients deposited into the lakes from their catchment. These include sand, silt, clay, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and potassium in high concentrations. Soluble nutrients like nitrate increase the algal and weed growth in the surface and subsurface of the lakes. This unwanted growth creates deficiency of oxygen supply and ultimately influences the eutrophication.Digital copy of Thesis.University of Kashmir
