    The role of family conflict and cohesion in adolescents’ social responsibility: emotion regulation ability as a mediator

    The social context is crucial for the adolescent development of self-regulatory skills and social responsibility. To understand the role of social context in adolescent development, the present study examined family predictors (i.e., family cohesion and conflict) of social responsibility, with emotion regulation ability as a mediating process. A total of 828 Chinese adolescents (35.6% female; mean age = 13.92 years, SD = 1.34) were recruited from major Chinese cities, including Hong Kong and Macau. Path analysis revealed that emotion regulation ability mediated the relation between family factors (i.e., family cohesion and family conflict) and social responsibility. That is, the ability to regulate emotions serves as a process between family factors and social responsibility. More specifically, family cohesion was positively associated with emotion regulation ability, whereas family conflict was negatively associated with emotion regulation ability. In turn, emotion regulation ability was positively associated with social responsibility. The results suggested that the family environment and adolescent’s emotion regulation ability are important contextual and intrapersonal factors contributing to their development of social responsibility. As an implication, policymakers and practitioners might allocate resources to enrich positive family interactions and cultivate emotional competency to support adolescents’ development of social responsibility

    Improved urban flood detection in deeper floods using synthetic aperture radar double-scattering intensity and interferometric coherence

    Detection of flooding in rural areas is now commonly performed by high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors. However, flooding in urban areas causes the greater risk to lives and property. Urban flood detection is more challenging due to SAR shadow, layover and double scattering effects. Nevertheless, it may often be identified using the fact that, in a post-flood image, double scattering between building walls and adjacent floodwater generally exceeds that in a pre-flood image, where double scattering occurs between buildings and adjacent ground. However, in the event of the urban region being deeply flooded, only a part of the building walls may remain above the flood level, so that the post-flood double scattering may reduce and a flooded region may be misclassified as non-flooded. We investigate whether flood detection can be improved for deeper urban floods by using interferometric coherence as an adjunct to double scattering. An urban area that is not flooded should often exhibit high coherence between image pairs, whereas if there is flooding in one of the images the coherence should be low. An urban flood in Japan that contained deep-flooded, shallow-flooded and non-flooded areas was used as a test example. It was imaged by Sentinel-1, and WorldDEM Digital Surface Model data was used to estimate flood depth and building orientation. An analysis of double scatterers of low post-/pre-flood brightness ratio was carried out for deeply flooded and non-flooded urban double scatterers. It was shown that, using coherence, 58% of the deeply flooded buildings could be detected at the cost of a 16% false positive rate. Without the use of coherence to supplement brightness ratio, all these deeply flooded buildings would be misclassified as non-flooded. This finding could be of use in automating the detection of urban flooding as an aid to flood risk management

    Mitigating the digital suffering: bolstering the digital literacy of older adults and contributing to a more inclusive society

    Digital literacy, a critical factor in enhancing social well-being, is pivotal in every individual's life. Digital literacy competency varies in different age groups, and this difference has been more observable during the COVID-19 pandemic. The older adults who were more vulnerable to the effects of the pandemic, mainly remained isolated from society due to prolonged lockdowns. This isolation made them more dependent on a digital life to be able to continue their life courses. However, particularly the ones from lower income and education groups felt more suffering emerged from the lack of digital skills. Drawing on the technology acceptance model, we explicate the impact of a socially responsible project conducted on a sample of 65+ older adults on enhancing their digital skills. The learning and emotional effects of the ten-week training were analysed, and several outcomes were reported. While the training notably enhanced the participants' digital literacy competencies, it had minimal effect on their emotional outcomes

    Priority setting for health equality – searching for an ethical framework

    Compounded by 14 years of public welfare austerity, health equality presents a challenge that extends beyond healthcare in isolation because it also engages the more recondite politics of public health. Recent policy has addressed the issue by requiring National Health Service (NHS) bodies to integrate their services with those of local authorities. We consider how this adds significant new difficulty to the already complex process of NHS resource allocation. We argue that these duties require a new framework to gauge the values, evidence and criteria needed to set priorities for public health; not simply as a desirable objective, but a necessity in law. We consider current approaches to priority setting for medical treatment, and the responses already offered by current ethical frameworks. We then discuss the new ethical, political, and practical challenges posed by public health priority setting for health equality. Informed by this context, we engage an intersectional lens to explore a ‘non-ideal’ solution grounded in Professor Sir Michael Marmot’s framework to reduce health inequalities

In recent years, the garden has played a central role in creating new communities and connecting art, nature, and cultural history into one cohesive whole. In 2025, the Garden will continue as a living laboratory for artistic exploration of nature’s materials, cycles, and meanings — in close dialogue with the local community and the landscape of Rønnebæksholm. In 2025, Rønnebæksholm has invited artists Lisbeth Bank, Gry Bagøien, Therese Bülow, and Florian Roithmayr to develop a special artistic program in the Garden

    Assimilation of future ocean current measurements using satellites

    Accurate forecasting of the ocean is crucial for numerous applications, including enhancing numerical weather prediction through coupled ocean-atmosphere systems. Upcoming satellite missions will provide measurements of ocean surface currents from space, offering the potential for significant improvements in forecasting accuracy. Data assimilation is the technique that integrates observations with numerical models to produce ocean forecasts. Existing ocean data assimilation systems rely on assumptions about velocity fields that are sufficient in the absence of ocean current observations. However, the future availability of satellite current measurements necessitates a reassessment of these assumptions and advances in the treatment of velocity fields within the existing systems. In this thesis, we propose a modification to NEMOVAR, the variational data assimilation system used by the NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) model, introducing alternative velocity variables to those currently used. The proposed variables are ageostrophic streamfunction and velocity potential. We design and test a novel transformation to these variables within both a simplified shallow water model and an idealised configuration of the NEMO model. This transformation is analysed both mathematically and numerically in the shallow water model. In implementing this transformation, we conduct an in-depth exploration of the boundary conditions associated with these new variables and investigate a numerical artifact in the solution. The transformation is further examined in the NEMO configuration, with a focus on integrating these variables into the NEMOVAR assimilation system. Assimilation experiments are performed to evaluate the impact of this new variable formulation on the assimilation of future ocean surface current observations. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach improves the accuracy of the analysis produced by the assimilation of such measurements. This thesis provides a comprehensive assessment of the theoretical and practical implications of adopting these alternative velocity variables and establishes a strong foundation for their future application within NEMOVAR

    Anthrenus (Anthrenu) graecus (Coleoptera: Dermestidae: Megatominae), a new species from Greece

    A new species, Anthrenus (Anthrenus) graecus, Holloway & Herrmann (Coleoptera: Dermestidae: Megatominae) from Greece is described and compared with Anthrenus pimpinellae Fabricius, 1775, the most obvious confusion species. Externally, the two species are very similar. Differences at the aedeagal level are subtle, the feature displaying the most obvious differences between the species is the structure of male sternite IX. As well as displaying the images, a quantitative comparison is made separating the sternite IXs. Both species were found in the same region around Thessaloniki, but further south in Crete only A. graecus specimens were found
