Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of some novel 5-alkyl-6-substituted uracils and related derivatives
6-Chloro-5-ethyl-, n-propyl- and isopropyluracils 5a-c were efficiently prepared from the corresponding 5-alkybarbituric acids 3a-c via treatment with phosphorus oxychloride and N,N-dimethylaniline to yield the corresponding 5-alkyl-2,4,6-trichloro-pyrimidines 4a-c, which were selectively hydrolyzed by heating in 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide for 30 minutes. The reaction of compounds 5a-c with 1-substituted piperazines yielded the corresponding 5-alkyl-6-(4-substituted-1-piperazinyl)uracils 6a-j. The target 8-alkyltetrazolo[1,5-f]pyrimidine-5,7(3H,6H)-diones 7a-c were prepared via the reaction of 5a-c with sodium azide. Compounds 6a-j and 7a-c were tested for in vitro activities against a panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and the yeast-like pathogenic fungus Candida albicans. Compound 6h displayed potent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, while compound 6b showed moderate activity against the Gram-positive bacteria. All the tested compounds were practically inactive against Candida albican
Microwave-assisted one-step synthesis of fenamic Acid hydrazides from the corresponding acids.
A facile and efficient method for synthesis of fenamic acid hydrazides from their acids in one-step reaction under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions was developed. Compared with the two-step conventional heating method, the process was simple, the reaction time was very short and the yields were almost quantitative
Effects of firm characteristics on investment decisions by foreign institutions: An empirical study of Indian firms
The study analyses the inter-firm differences in the foreign institutional investors’ portfolio investment with respect to the firm characteristics for a sample of Indian firms. The firm specific characteristics studied are promoters’ shareholding, firm size, systematic risk, price to book ratio, return on equity, dividend yield and export sales. The analysis shows that foreign institutional investors prefer large firms and firms with less promoters’ shareholding. Measuring foreign institutional investors’ shareholding as a percentage of the total outstanding shares and as a percentage of the total outstanding shares available for investment by the non-promoters category does not alter the results

“Negation, Selection and Substitution: Charlotte Bronte’s Feminist Poetics”
This study examines an early dramatic monologue by Charlotte Bronte and finds that Bronte is a contemporary of Robert Browning and has precedence over Alfred Tennyson. She also predates Victorian women poets in use of the form.
The study investigates both how Bronte developed the form and why she introduced it into poetry. The findings point in the direction of her readings in seventeenth-century drama and her earlier writing of a short play as a background that made the monologue possible. Her personal motive for using it in poetry is a reaction to Robert Southey’s discouraging response to her experience of poetry writing. The poem complains of literary marginalization and asserts female poetic potentials in an objective manner. The form also allows Bronte to contradict Romantic ideology and challenge patriarchal culture.
Bronte’s experience with the dramatic monologue in this poem on both formal and contextual levels should grant her better recognition in the poetic canon than that assigned to her so far
INFLUENCE OF AN INDUCED MAGNETIC FIELD ON PERISTALTIC TRANSPORT IN AN ASYMMETRIC CHANNEL
In this study, we investigate the effects of an induced magnetic field on the peristaltic transport of a Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT) fluid in an asymmetric channel. Asymmetry in the flow is induced because of wave trains with different amplitudes and phases. Development of mathematical analysis is made under long wavelength and low Reynolds number approximations. Explicit expressions of stream function, pressure gradient, magnetic force function, axial induced magnetic field, and current density are derived. Computation of pressure rise is based upon numerical integration. The obtained expressions are carefully analyzed through physical interpretation
Change of basis for lattice-valued convergence groups, New Math. and Natural Computation
Using the idea of changing the basis-lattice, we investigate in this article the impact of change-of-basis to the notion of stratified lattice-valued generalized convergence group by employing so-called functorial mechanism. We discuss here some of the subcategories of the category of stratified lattice-valued generalized convergence groups, such as, stratified lattice-valued Kent convergence groups, stratified lattice-valued limit groups, and look into the possible link between these objects with stratified lattice-valued neighborhood groups and stratified lattice-valued neighborhood topological groups, when bases are changed. Moreover, with the help of the notion of stratified lattice-valued filter attributed to U. Hohle and A. P. Sostak, we introduce a category HS-S-FilGrp, of stratified lattice-valued filter groups, and study its relationship with other categories so far achieved in this pape
Weak solutions of quasilinear biharmonic problems with convex nonlin- earities
We study the existence of positive weak solutions to a fourth-order semi- linear elliptic equation with Navier boundary conditions and a positive, increasing and convex source term. We also prove the uniqueness of extremal solutions. In particular, we generalize results of Mironescu and R˘adulescu for the bi-Laplacian operator
End-to-end gluing of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces
It was observed by R. Kusner and proved by J. Ratzkin that one can connect together two constant mean curvature surfaces having two ends with the same Delaunay parameter. This gluing procedure is known as a "end-to-end con- nected sum". In this paper we generalize, in any dimension, this gluing procedure
to construct new constant mean curvature hypersurfaces starting from some known hypersurfaces
Some Sensitive Metaphors in Cairene Arabic American English
The aim of this paper is to classify and explain the conceptual system behind the use of figures of speech. Speakers conceptualize the world in terms of images and metaphors; as the world is categorized into concepts, a pattern of metaphors formed for each pattern of metaphors rather than a number of isolated and random concepts. Metaphors are part of everyday speech that affects the ways in which we perceive, think, act and react. For example, Lakoff and Johnson discuss the concept that "argument is war": in an argument, participants perceive their situation during arguing as being engaged in battle
