Performance Analysis of Order-Statistic CFAR Detectors in Weibull Background: A comparison
This paper deals with the problem of automatic target detection in Weibull clutter and multiple target situations, without any prior knowledge of neither the non-stationary clutter statistics in which the radar operates nor the number of outliers that may be present in the reference window. We study and compare the performances of the Forward Order Statistic Automatic Censoring and Detection Constant False Censoring and Alarm Rates Detectors based upon the Maximum Likelihood Estimators (MLE-based F-OSACD-CFCAR) and the Weber-Haykin threshold (WH-based F-OSACD-CFCAR). The censoring and detection algorithms are a two in one built detector. They select repeatedly a suitable set of ranked cells among reference cells surrounding the cell under test to estimate the unknown background level and set the adaptive threshold accordingly. The performances are evaluated by means of Monte Carlo simulations
PAST and OPAST Algorithms in Monostatic Airborne Radar
In this paper, we investigate the use of two iterative algorithms for the suppression of interferences and thus, the detection of slow targets in monostatic airborne radar. The conventional space-time adaptive processing (STAP) ) such as the SMI or the Principal Components (PC) methods are computationally costly and require the estimation of the clutter covariance matrix from secondary data which are assumed to be independent and identically distributed. However, in monostatic airborne radar, because of the platform motion and the inclination of the array, the data are not stationary. Consequently, we propose to evaluate the performances of adaptive recursive subspace-based algorithms of linear complexity using PAST (projection approximation subspace tracking) and OPAST (orthonormal PAST) algorithms. Simulation results are presented and the performance of STAP is discussed with a comparative study to PC and SINR metric methods justifying the use of those algorithms in radar signal processing. In fact they allow a good detection even with low rank and in Doppler ambiguous environment
Learning to think spatially in an undergraduate interdisciplinary computational design context: A case study
Spatial thinking skills are vital for success in everyday living and work, not to mention the centrality of spatial reasoning in scientific discoveries, design-based disciplines, medicine, geosciences and mathematics to name a few. This case study describes a course in spatial thinking and communicating designed and delivered by an interdisciplinary team over a three-year period to first-year university students. Four major elements provide a framework for the sequencing of instruction and acquisition of 2D and 3D spatial thinking and reasoning skills in a computational design context. We describe the process of introducing students to computational design environments beginning with a fun and familiar tool in preparation for a more complex, industry-standard system (SolidWorks). A design project provides diverse student teams an opportunity to integrate and apply foundational spatial concepts and skills including sketching, 2D and 3D representations, as well as digital and physical modeling. Samples of student work illustrate the scaffolding necessary for students to successfully draw upon the spatial thinking and communication skills required to complete their team projects beginning with applying sketching techniques; modeling individual 3D parts; creating digital assemblies; and finally building the equivalent 3D physical model. Key instructional principles provide a framework for the analysis of what worked and what didn’t in relation to spatial skills development in students. The lessons learned are identified along with potential future directions for teaching and learning scholarship in spatial thinking development within a computational design context
Evaluation of End-to-End Quality of Service over VPN Networks through Various Priority Mechanisms
VPN networks running over MPLS have found widespread acceptance as both an efficient and cost effective means to provide connectivity for large organizations and companies. However, providing QoS is still a major challenge that needs to be addressed. Using realistic input traffic, a simulation model is built for a large network where various queueing policies are implemented and evaluated for the provision of certain QoS requirements. After a thorough analysis the merits and shortcomings of each policy are determined, and recommendations are given along with future research directions
Effect of age on the biomechanical and microcirculatory properties of the skin in healthy individuals and during venous ulceration.
BACKGROUND:
With aging there is alteration of elastic properties of the skin and skin-blood flow.
AIM:
The purpose of this study was to compare age-related changes in selected biomechanical parameters of the skin (skin hardness, skin extensibility, relaxation time constant, τ) and subcutaneous microcirculatory quality (SMQ) in individuals with and without venous diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
TWO GROUPS WERE STUDIED: the first group was of asymptomatic healthy individuals and the second group included patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and venous ulceration, without edema. Both groups were subdivided to three age categories (21-40, 41-60 and 61-90 years old). Skin hardness was measured by durometer, extensibility and τ were measured using extensometer and SQM was assessed via postural vasoconstrictive response (LDF).
RESULTS:
Results showed that skin hardness, extensibility, and τ-values were increased, whereas LDF was decreased in the older groups as compared with younger groups. These changes are attributed to alterations in the skin structure and reduced capillaries density networks. Similar behavior was found in the biomechanical and microcirculatory changes in patients with venous ulceration and CVI, but these changes were more increased further in older patients with venous ulceration as compared with older patients with CVI and that can be attribute to more intense response against tissue injury.
CONCLUSIONS:
Since aging elevated skin hardness and extensibility, but lowered vasoconstrictive response in individuals, with and without, venous diseases, we conclude that aging process is likely to cause an accumulation of damaged skin tissues and that could induce an apparent antigen-driven response that altered skin structure and the subsequent biomechanical properties obtained in this stud
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) parameter negotiation between heterogeneous 4G wireless network operators”
We are currently witnessing a growing interest of network operators to migrate their existing 2G/3G networks to 4G technologies such as long-term evolution (LTE) to enhance the user experience and service opportunities in terms of providing multi-megabit bandwidth, more efficient use of radio networks, latency reduction, and improved mobility. Along with this, there is a strong deployment of packet data networks such as those based on IEEE 802.11 and 802.16 standards. Mobile devices are having increased capabilities to access many of these wireless networks types at the same time. Reinforcing quality of service (QoS) in 4G wireless networks will be a major challenge because of varying bit rates, channel characteristics, bandwidth allocation and global roaming support among heterogeneous wireless networks. As a mobile user moves across access networks, to the issue of mapping resource reservations between different networks to maintain QoS behavior becomes crucial. To support global roaming and interoperability across heterogeneous wireless networks, it is important for wireless network operators to negotiate service level agreement (SLA) contracts relevant to the QoS requirements. Wireless IP traffic modeling (in terms of providing assured QoS) is still immature because the majority of the existing work is merely based on the characterization of wireless IP traffic without investigating the behavior of queueing systems for such traffic. To overcome such limitations, we investigate SLA parameter negotiation among heterogeneous wireless network operators by focusing on traffic engineering and QoS together for 4G wireless networks. We present a novel mechanism that achieves service continuity through SLA parameter negotiation by using a translation matrix, which maps QoS parameters between different access networks. The SLA matrix composition is modeled analytically based on the G/M/1 queueing system. We evaluate the model using two different scheduling schemes and we derive closed form expressions for different QoS parameters for performance metrics such as packet delay and packet loss rate. We also develop a discrete event simulator and conduct a series of simulation experiments in order to understand the QoS behavior of corresponding traffic classes
