    Optimization of 5-flurouracil solid-lipid nanoparticles: a preliminary study to treat colon cancer.

    Solid lipid nanoparticle (SLNs) formulae were utilized for the release of 5-flurouracil (5-FU) inside the colonic medium for local treatment of colon cancer. SLNs were prepared by double emulsion-solvent evaporation technique (w/o/w) using triglyceride esters, Dynasan™ 114 or Dynasan™ 118 along with soyalecithin as the lipid parts. Different formulation parameters; including type of Dynasan, soyalicithin:Dynasan ratio, drug:total lipid ratio, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) concentration were studied with respect to particle size and drug entrapment efficiency. Results showed that formula 8 (F8) with composition of 20% 5-FU, 27% Dynasan™ 114, and 53% soyalithicin andformula 14 (20% 5-FU, 27% Dynasan™ 118, and 53% soyalithicin), which were stabilized by 0.5% PVA, as well as F10 with similar composition as F8 but stabilized by 2% PVA were considered the optimum formulae as they combined small particle size and relatively high encapsulation efficiencies. F8 had a particle size of 402.5 nm ± 34.5 with a polydispersity value of 0.005 and an encapsulation efficiency of 51%, F10 had a 617.3 ± 54.3 nm particle size with 0.005 polydispersity value and 49.1% encapsulation efficiency, whereas formula F14 showed a particle size of 343 nm ± 29 with 0.005 polydispersity, and an encapsulation efficiency of 59.09%. DSC and FTIR results suggested the existence of the lipids in the solid crystalline state. Incomplete biphasic prolonged release profile of the drug from both formulae was observed in phosphate buffer pH 6.8 as well as simulated colonic medium containing rat caecal contents. A burst release with magnitudes of 26% and 28.8% cumulative drug released were noticed in the first hour samples incubated in phosphate buffer pH 6.8 for both F8 and F14, respectively, followed by a slow release profile reaching 50% and 52% after 48 hours

    Antioxidant activity of Covolvulus hystrix vahl and its chemical constituents.

    Total alcohol and successive extracts (diethyl ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol) of Covolvulus hystrix Vahl were screened for their antioxidant activity using free radical 2-2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Trolox as reference substance. The tested extracts showed variable antioxidant activities. The highest antioxidant activity was achieved in total alcohol (48.32%) followed by ethyl acetate (37. 8 %) and n-butanol (32.96 %) extracts. From the ethyl acetate extract four compounds were isolated and identified as quercetin, quercetin 3-0-rutinoside and quercetin-7-O-rhamnoside in addition to ferulic acid using different spectroscopic analysis such as, (1)HNMR, (13)CNMR, COSY, HMBC and HMQC

    The essential oils of the aerial part of two Asteraceae species, namely Euryops arabicus Steud. and Laggera decurrens (Vahl.) Hepper and Wood, were studied by GC and GC/MS. In parallel the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were evaluated. The investigation led to the identification of 48 and 44 compounds for both plants, respectively. The essential oil of E. arabicus was rich in oxygenated sesquiterpenes (39.9%). The oil also contained a high content of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (24.1%). Compounds such as caryophyllene oxide (8.6%), T-cadinol (7.0%), spathulenol (5.2%), (E)-β-caryophyllene (6.0%) and 2-epi-(E)-β-caryophyllene (6.0%) were the main constituents of the oil. Oxygenated monoterpenes also predominated in L. decurrens (46.3%). The thymoquinone-derivative, 3-methoxy-2-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl)-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-dione (28.1%), thymol (5.7%) and eudesma-11-en-4a-ol (7.0%) were the most abundant constituents. Both essential oils showed antimicrobial activity with MIC-values between 0.13-5.25 mg/mL. Furthermore, only the essential oil of L. decurrens exhibited a strong antioxidant activity (91%) at 500 µg/mL. DOI: 10.3390/molecules1606514

    User Profiling in Telecommunication Fraud Detection

    Nowadays, telecommunication fraud has become a major issue due to the large amount of financial lose it causes. As a result, fraud detection techniques have been developed excessively. These techniques are usually based on the changes of users’ normal behavior. However, due to the massive amount of data, in telecommunication, profiling of user behaviors was introduced in the field of fraud detection. Thus, the construction of users’ profile and capturing all possible behaviors is the first step in fraud detection, and then any anomaly detection technique can be applied to detect the abnormality in the profiles. However, current works of profiling in telecommunication fraud detection is still emerging. Thus, this paper present a new approach that construct and update two types of profiles to consider the users’ behavior, characteristics, context, and interaction preferences. It uses an unsupervised technique that combine statistical and rule based techniques together in order to make the process of profiling more accurate and adaptable. In addition, because of the use of interaction preferences such an approach can also be used as fraud detection and not only as pre-step for such detection

    Automatic Generation of Semantic Features and Lexical Relations using OWL Ontologies

    Abstract Semantic features are theoretical units of meaning-holding components which are used for representing word meaning. These features play a vital role in determining the kind of lexical relation which exists between words in a language. Although such model of meaning representation has numerous applications in various fields, the manual derivation of semantic features is a cumbersome and time consuming task. We aim to elevate this process by developing an automated semantic feature extraction system based on ontological models. Such an approach will provide explicit word meaning representation, and enable the computation of lexical relations such as synonym and antonymy. This paper describes the design and implementation of a prototype system used for automatically deriving componential formulae, and computing lexical relations between words from a given OWL ontology. The system has been tested on a number of ontologies, both English and Arabic. Results of the evaluation indicate that the system was able to provide necessary componential formulae for highly-axiomed ontologies. With regards to computing lexical relations, the system performs better when predicting antonyms, with an average precision of 40%, and an average recall of 75%.     An Effective Feature Selection Method for On-line Signature based Authentication

    In this paper, we tackle the problem of identifying the relevant set of features that helps achieving accurate on-line signature based authentication. There exists a large set of features that can be acquired from the original signal or derived from it. Taking into account the whole set of features in the authentication process is time consuming. Furthermore, not all features are relevant and some of them are redundant. Consequently, finding the minimal set of relevant features is a prerequisite to perform fast authentication while achieving better accuracy. This feature selection task is combinatorial in nature. In our work, we handle it using a Discrete Quantum behaved Particle Swarm Optimization strategy (DQPSO). The space of possible feature sets is explored according to a QPSO dynamic where each set is encoded in terms of a binary representation.     Heat and mass transfer effects on peristaltic flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid in a channel with compliant walls

    This investigation describes the peristaltic motion of a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Oldroyd-B fluid with heat and mass transfer. An incompressible Oldroyd-B fluid is considered in a channel with flexible walls. The relevant equations are developed by employing equations of continuity, momentum, energy, and concentration. Expressions of stream function, temperature, concentration field, and heat transfer coefficient are presented when the wave number is small. The obtained solutions are graphically discussed for the several interesting parameters entering into the problem. It is found that relaxation and retardation times have opposite effects on the size of the trapped bolus

    steady MHD convective and slip flow due to a rotating disk. Viscous dissipation and Ohmic heating are taken into account. The nonlinear partial differential equations for MHD laminar flow of the homogeneous fluid are reduced to a system of five coupled ordinary differential equations by using similarity transformation. The derived solution is expressed in series of exponentially-decaying functions using homotopy analysis method (HAM). The convergence of the obtained series solutions is examined. Finally some figures are sketched to show the accuracy of the applied method and assessment of various slip parameter c, magnetic field parameter M, Eckert Ec, Schmidt Sc and SoretSr numbers on the profiles of the dimensionless velocity, temperature and concentration distributions. Validity of the obtained results are verified by the numerical results
