Dark Laughter in Uniform: Humor and Militarism in Gregory Burke’s Black Watch

    No full text
Gregory Burke’s Black Watch, which premiered at the 2006 Edinburgh International Festival, focuses on the experiences of Scottish soldiers deployed to Iraq in 2003. The play makes extensive use of dark humor by juxtaposing laughter and pain, valor and absurdity, military and civilian life, in order to reveal the contradictions of contemporary militarism. Rather than celebrating patriotism or sacrifice, Burke undermines the romanticized narratives of heroism through profanity, abrupt shifts in tone, and mock-heroic scenes. Dark humor, thus, functions as both a coping strategy for soldiers’ trauma and a satirical device that subverts political rhetoric about the war. By situating Scotland’s Black Watch regiment through humor within this framework, Burke reconfigures war not as a story of noble call but as a site of absurd exploitation of soldiers. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate how Black Watch employs dark humor as a literary tool that destabilizes political rhetoric, heroic myths, and nationalist sentiment

School: Graduate School of Science, Arts and Technology Departament: Political Science and Philosophy Qualification: International Relations and Diplomacy Supervisor: Prof.Dr. Rovshan Ibrahimov FaiqThe Israel-Palestine conflict remains one of the most politically and symbolically sensitive issues in international relations, especially when it comes to U.S. foreign policy. While American support for Israel is usually explained through geopolitics, much less attention has been given to the language and narratives that help shape this support. Building on Edward Said's theory of Orientalism, this study analyzes how American Orientalist scholars have framed and explained U.S. foreign policy with respect to the Israel-Palestine conflict. It is particularly interested in how Palestinians are described in official U.S. rhetoric—and how these descriptions contrast with how Israel is presented. While Orientalism has been widely discussed in literature and cultural studies, far less attention has been paid to how its core ideas still shape the language and reasoning behind U.S. foreign policy. This study seeks to address that gap by looking at how Orientalist thinking continues to influence the way the Israel-Palestine conflict is described and defended in official discourse today. This study addresses that gap by analyzing how Orientalist thinking appears in American speeches, strategy documents, think tank reports, media coverage, and congressional debates. Using critical discourse analysis, the study reveals consistent patterns between presidential administrations and institutional platforms. The discursive analyses of the data show that Palestinians are routinely positioned as victims or threats, while Israeli actions are framed as moral, legal, or civilizational justifications. This study contributes to postcolonial and foreign policy discourse analysis by demonstrating how enduring Orientalist thinking continues to structure American discourses. The findings call for a more balanced and self-aware approach to political language and offer new ways to understand how ideology and power interact in global politics

What role for the EU in the post-Washington South Caucasus?

The agreements reached in the US-mediated summit of the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders in Washington on August 8 are poised to fundamentally reshape the region's future. Particularly, the deal concerning the Zangezur corridor – rebranded as the “Trump Route for Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) – holds significant geopolitical importance. If implemented, the TRIPP agreement would deal a severe blow to the regional standing of Russia and Iran. More importantly, it would pave the way for a strategic U.S. presence in this critical geography. This outcome represents a success that few would have predicted for the United States, especially for the Trump administration, given the region's notoriously complex and volatile geopolitics

Assessing quality management practices: Comparative analysis of public and private universities using fuzzy inference system

    No full text
Aim: This study aims to examine how public and private universities implement quality management practices and identify areas requiring improvement. Methodology: A purposive sample of 14 universities, representing both public and private sectors, was selected. Data were gathered from 28 department heads using questionnaires. The responses were analyzed through ttests, means, and standard deviations. To capture subjective perceptions more effectively, the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) was applied to model satisfaction levels across key quality management factors. Findings: Results indicate that moderate satisfaction occurred in the case where leadership and process approaches were used less frequently, whereas the other case showed higher satisfaction because the evidencebased decision-making approach was more dominant. These findings highlight the gap in improvement processes and leadership, while highlighting the values of data-driven practices. Practical Implications: The study provides recommendations for strengthening quality management in universities, including enhancing leadership capacity, adopting systematic improvement processes, and encouraging evidence-based decision-making. It also suggests that pursuing international accreditation through the Higher Education Commission could help universities align with global standards and enhance their institutional reputation

Synthesis, crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of ethyl (E)-2-cyano-3-[5-(4-ethylphenyl)- isoxazol-3-yl]prop-2-enoate

    No full text
In the molecule of the title compound, C17H16N2O3, the isoxazol and phenyl rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 14.84 (5)°. The 2-cyanoacrylate moiety is in E- configuration. In the crystal, there are no intermolecular hydrogen-bonding or C—H⋯π(ring) interactions, only a π–π interaction between the parallel isoxazol rings with centroid-to-centroid distance of 3.4932 (9) Å (α = 0.02°). The Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that the most important contributions to the crystal packing are from H⋯H (43.9%), H⋯N/N⋯H (17.0%), H⋯O/O⋯H (13.9%) and C⋯C (10.1%) interactions

A Book Review of the Skourdoumbis, A. & Webster, S. (2023). The Epistemological Development of Education. Considering Bourdieu, Foucault and Dewey. Routledge

    No full text
Skourdoumbis and Webster analyze the design of education policy frameworks in Australia, the UK and the USA and draw on sociological, political and philosophical concepts of Bourdieu, Foucault and Dewey to place familiar debate on neo-liberal education policies within a multi-faceted critical framework that integrates socio-cultural analysis of evidence-based teaching effectiveness research and questions the dynamics of institutional power mechanisms that transform classroom practices. This uncommon unite of three scholars bring novel analysis and encourage rethinking the purposes and processes of public education and creating a new inclusive epistemology rooted in Deweyan concepts of progressive education. The book contributes to the scholarly critique of the consequences of neo-capitalist-driven education policies making individual economic prosperity and the country’s competitiveness the main forces of educational development. Suggestions are offered including democratic, scientific and authentic dimensions to the contemporary epistemologies of education to enable it to address the social, philosophical, cultural, local, and situated and become a “truly human activity.

Fakültə: İqtisadiyyat və Biznes yüksək təhsil Departament: İqtisadiyyat və Menecment İxtisas: Turizm Elmi rəhbər: Ph.D. Şahin Şükür oğlu ƏkbərMüasir dövrdə texnologiyanın sürətli inkişafı, xüsusilə süni intellektin müxtəlif sahələrdə tətbiqi, istifadəçi yönümlü xidmətlərin keyfiyyətini və effektivliyini artırmağa imkan yaradır. Turizm sektoru da bu inkişafdan təsirlənərək fərdiləşdirilmiş tövsiyə sistemlərinin istifadəsini genişləndirir. Turistlərin maraq və ehtiyaclarına uyğun təkliflər təqdim edən bu sistemlər, istifadəçi təcrübəsinin və məmnuniyyətinin artırılmasında mühüm rol oynayır və bununla da seçim prosesində əhəmiyyətli yer tutur. Psixoloji profilə əsaslanan fərdiləşdirmə isə tövsiyələrin daha məqsədyönlü olmasına şərait yaradır. Bu kontekstdə Big Five modeli istifadəçinin fərdi xüsusiyyətlərini qiymətləndirmək və sistemlərin uyğunluğunu artırmaq üçün əlverişli bir çərçivə təqdim edir. Mövzunun aktuallığı məhz bu texnoloji və davranış yönümlü yanaşmaların turizmdə sintez olunmasından irəli gəlir. İşin nəticələri turizm sahəsində fəaliyyət göstərən platformalar və texnoloji xidmət təminatçıları üçün real tətbiq sahəsinə malikdir. Psixoloji profilləşdirməyə əsaslanan sistemlər vasitəsilə daha dəqiq və fərdi tövsiyələr verilə bilər, bu da istifadəçi məmnuniyyətini və xidmət keyfiyyətini artırmağa imkan verir
