Debating Nationalism in the South Caucasus in the Context of Integrated Nationalism

    No full text
Flag-waving that symbolises the rise of nationalism is everywhere and has become a global trend. In that sense, states need to develop nationalist strategies to survive. However, due to the needs and capacity of the states, there are different types of nationalism. Aggressive and destructive nationalism is one of them and refers to the founding states of the modern order. For example, in his second time in office, US President Donald J. Trump prioritised destructive and aggressive nationalism in favour of strengthening the state in terms of radical economic actions. In this sense, democracy, which emerged as one of the most efficient tools for maintaining order, is now obsolete. Therefore, destructive and aggressive nationalism aims to strengthen the state rather than the nation. For this reason, leaders of the founding states of modernity have been following destructive and aggressive nationalism. Thus, it seems that the adoption of nationalism has already become a necessity for the states

    No full text
School: Graduate School of Economics and Business Department: School of Economics and Management Program: Financial Management Supervisor: Dr. Nigar IsmaylovaThe aim of this dissertation is to provide crucial findings in regard to the influence of green bonds on the stock performance of corporations listed in the BRICS in order to close the gap between sustainable investing and long-term stock value which in return will assist investors in whether to invest in green bonds. Additionally, implementing a reference point for forthcoming studies intending to research complementary topics to mitigate the gap in academic literature is another purpose of this study. Therefore, this paper will try to answer the following research questions to discover the relationship between green bonds and stock price movement: Is there a correlation between green bonds and the stock price movement of corporations listed in the BRICS stock market? How significant is the correlation among them (if there is any)? What are the determinants that influence this relationship? Furthermore, the paper will discuss three theories related to the research area: overinvestment, signaling, and stakeholder theory, which are used to direct the research to explain the research questions as signaling and stakeholder theories suggest that actions of the company that have been taken for the greater good of the society and its stakeholders will be compensated by the market and overinvestment theory will discuss whether green bonds issuance may not affect stock price movements as a result of information asymmetry

Azerbaijan Punches Above its Weight in Regional Geopolitics

    No full text
Throughout much of the post-Soviet era, Azerbaijan remained a territorially fragmented state, with roughly 20 percent of its internationally recognized lands under occupation of the neighboring Armenia and nearly 700,000 people forcibly displaced. During this period, Baku largely depended on the goodwill of major powers and international institutions to rectify the injustice. Peace negotiations mediated by international actors were repeatedly undermined by the Armenian side, whose leaders, backed by Russia – Yerevan’s military ally within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) – disregarded international appeals, including four United Nations Security Council resolutions calling for the withdrawal of occupying forces

The Trans-Caspian Pipeline: Turkmenistan’s Path to EU Energy Security and Strategic Diversification

    No full text
The Russia-Ukraine conflict has intensified the European Union’s (EU) need to diversify its energy sources, positioning Turkmenistan as a potential key supplier. With the world’s fourth-largest natural gas reserves, Turkmenistan could play a pivotal role in global energy markets. However, governance challenges, an overreliance on China for gas exports, and infrastructural deficiencies hinder this potential. This study explores the strategic importance of the Trans-Caspian Pipeline (TCP), which could connect Turkmenistan’s reserves to the EU’s Southern Gas Corridor, enhancing Europe’s energy security. The methodology involves a qualitative analysis of secondary data, including policy documents, academic literature, and geopolitical reports, to evaluate the challenges and opportunities associated with the TCP. The research highlights significant internal and external challenges, including geopolitical resistance from Russia and Iran, and economic and technical barriers to the pipeline’s implementation. Despite these obstacles, regional collaborations, such as the 2021 Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan Memorandum of Understanding, indicate pathways forward. The analysis concludes that sustained investments, strong political will, and strategic international partnerships are essential for unlocking Turkmenistan’s energy potential and addressing the EU’s energy diversification goals

The Washington Summit Reshapes the Regional Order in the South Caucasus

    No full text
President Donald Trump is right to describe the U.S.-mediated summit between the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders on August 8 in Washington as a historic event. It is historic not only for its contribution to the peace process between the two countries, but also for the significant reshaping of the South Caucasus’ security order that it has set in motion. The day after the summit, the region woke up to a new reality – one markedly different from what had existed until recently

Faculty: Financial Management Department: Graduate School of Economics and Business Qualification: Financial Management Specialization: Financial Management Supervisor: PhD Ismayilova Nigar Advisor: PhD Vusal AhmadovOver the past few decades, the increasing urgency of climate change and worsening environmental degradation have pushed countries and financial markets to prioritize sustainable development. Thus, the demand for financial instruments supporting environmental projects has increased. Green bonds have become a source of financing for environmental, green projects among these instruments. These bonds have supported projects such as energy-efficient buildings, clean transportation, pollution reduction, etc. As a result, they help achieve climate goals by saving energy. These bonds also have an impact on increasing social responsibility in society. In this thesis, I will focus on the green bond market in the European and Asian regions. As an example, I have examined the markets through Germany and Japan. I have examined in this thesis work, the regulations and development trends of green bonds in both countries. In the Data and Methodology section, you will be informed of the positive impact of green bond issuance on GDP and renewable energy production worldwide. In that section, the relationship between them is statistically analyzed. As a result, we present our proposals for Azerbaijan, taking advantage of international experiences. With the help of this thesis, we will get acquainted with the possible advantages and disadvantages for Azerbaijan, a new participant in the green bond market

Damjili Cave Revisited, Gazakh, West Azerbaijan (2016–2023)

    No full text
Archaeological investigations at Damjili Cave, conducted from 1953 to 1957, marked the beginning of substantial Palaeolithic research in Azerbaijan. The remains recovered by these field campaigns highlighted the cave’s significant potential for understanding the cultural development of the South Caucasus. The material uncovered during these excavations sheds light not only on the Palaeolithic but also on later periods, including the Mesolithic and Neolithic. However, the details remained obscured for a long time due to the stratigraphic disturbance of the excavated trenches. To address this, we reinvestigated Damjili Cave from 2016 to 2023. Our study revealed a cultural sequence spanning the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, and Historic periods, all overlaying Middle Palaeolithic (Mousterian) deposits. Although the Middle Palaeolithic layer was disturbed by water activity, the other layers exhibited excellent stratigraphic preservation. Most importantly, discovering the stratigraphic occurrences of the Mesolithic and Neolithic occupation layers is crucial for understanding the origins of the food production economy. This finding is the first at a single South Caucasus site, underscoring the historical importance of Damjili Cave

School: Graduate School of Science, Art and Technology Department: Psychology Qualification: Clinical Psychology Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Araz Ramiz AliguliyevThis dissertation is dedicated to studying the psychological characteristics of patients suffering from psychoactive substance addiction during the remission phase. The purpose of the research is to assess the levels of depression, anxiety, and manic symptoms in individuals in remission and determine the relationship between these symptoms and overall mental health. The findings of this study will contribute to personalizing psychological support and optimizing rehabilitation programs for individuals in remission. The research was conducted at the Republican Narcological Center, utilizing standardized psychodiagnostics tools. This study was conducted from February to April 2025 in the Republic Narcological Center of Azerbaijan. 100 male participants (aged between 16-60 years) with a DSM-V and ICD-11 defined addiction of any kind. Once written informed consent was obtained, all participants were enrolled in the study. Participants were not allowed to participate in the study if they were undergoing treatment for another serious mental illness, had a history of neurological disorders or severe mental illnesses other than addiction, or were unable to give informed consent because of cognitive impairments. According to the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) results, a significant portion of participants in remission exhibited mild to moderate depressive symptoms. A smaller subset showed severe symptoms, indicating a clinically meaningful presence of depression even after substance use cessation. The Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) indicated that moderate levels of anxiety were prevalent among the sample. The analysis revealed a statistically significant correlation between anxiety levels and the duration of remission, with higher anxiety reported among individuals in the early stages of recovery (p < 0.05). Findings from the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) showed that most participants scored within the normal range
