Environmental sustainability of food production and consumption in the Nordic and Baltic region : a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023
This scoping review examines environmental impacts related to food production and consumption in Nordic and Baltic countries. The overarching advice to all Nordic and Baltic countries, in line with the current body of scientific literature, is to shift to a more plant-based dietary pattern and avoid food waste. Taking into account current consumption patterns, there is a high potential and necessity to shift food consumption across the countries to minimise its environmental impact. More specifically, a substantial reduction in meat and dairy consumption and increased consumption of legumes/pulses, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds are suggested as a priority intervention. Reducing the environmental impacts of seafoods is also key and suggestions include a shift to seafoods with lower environmental impacts such as seaweed and bivalves. As part of the suggested transition to a more plant-based diet, the scope for increasing the provision of plant-based foods through increasing the cultivation of legumes/pulses, vegetables, and grains and through feed-to-food shifts within the region should be explored.202

Modelling and mapping the abundance of lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) in Norway
Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) grows in a range of nature types in the boreal zone, and understanding factors affecting the abundance of the plant, as well as mapping its spatial distribution, is important. The abundance of the species can be an indicator of ecosystem changes, and lingonberry can also be a source for commercial utilisation of berry resources. Using country-wide data from 6404 field plots of the Norwegian national forest inventory (NFI), we modelled the relationship between lingonberry cover and airborne laser scanning (ALS) and satellite metrics and bioclimatic variables describing the forest structure, terrain, soil properties and climate using a generalised mixed-effects model with a quasipoisson distribution. The validation carried out with an independent set of 2124 NFI plots indicated no obvious bias in predictions. The most important predictors were found to be interactions between dominant tree species, stand basal area and latitude, as well as the reflectance in the near-infrared band from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, the dominant height based on the ALS variable and the long-term mean summer (June–August) temperature. The results provide an indicator of the effects of global warming, as well as the possibility of giving forest management prescriptions that favour lingonberry and locating the most abundant lingonberry sites in Norwegian forests.202
Clean Industrial Deal should capitalize on the full benefits of the forest–based bioeconomy
In her Political Guidelines for the new European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen emphasizes the urgent need to simultaneously decarbonize and industrialize our economy. The Clean Industrial Deal aims to build a more circular and sustainably competitive economy while boosting productivity. European forests and forest-based bioeconomy are key to achieving these goals.
The European Union should:
1. Set targets and policies to support production and use of high-value forest-based products.
2. Secure the future growth and resilience of European forest resources.
3. Guide clean energy projects to areas of lower priority for forest-based services and livelihoods.202

ForestEcoSecurity - Management methods and technology for young boreal forests for adaptation to sustainable forest management goals in a changing climate
Focusing on young forest management, we summarize the Nordic forestry objectives, their target measures and current state of the forests. Based on the Nordic Boreal Forestry area study results, we review the current young stand management systems. Finally, we analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the systems to assess the roadmap for further development.202

The novelty of this literature review is to take the young forest management problems of Nordic Boreal Forestry (NBF) and change them into opportunities. Focusing on young forest management, we summarize the national Interreg Aurora region forestry objectives, their target measures and current state of the forests. Based on the NBF area study results published in the 2000s, we review the current young stand management systems by dividing them in practical implementation categories: I) digital tools for pre-planning of cutting areas, II) mechanized harvesting work methods and technologies, III) monitoring of wood procurement resourcing, and IV) transfer of research and development knowledge to practitioners and forest owners. Finally, we analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the systems to assess the roadmap for further development.202
