    The Life of Charlotte Despard:The Awakened Instinct

    This article is about Charlotte Despard, President of the London Vegetarian Society in 1918 and Vice-President in 1931, but also the founder of the Women’s Freedom League, suffragist, conscientious objector, leading figure in prison and education reform and a powerful figure in social politics. Vegetarianism was central to her activism, believing it would free women from drudgery and enable workers to live a healthier life. This article will draw on her own writing in the Vegetarian Messenger, to show readers how Despard herself saw the links between vegetarianism and social justice, links which are still relevant today

    Form, Time and Trauma:The Terence Davies Triptych and Queer Temporalities

    This essay argues that Children, Madonna and Child and Death and Transfiguration mark the emergence of Terence Davies unique and idiosyncratic approach to cinematic temporality and in their dissolution of the traditional distinction between flashback and flashforward encourage the emergence of a formal approach that works to express the complex relationship between the adult homosexual and the queer child. Via the work of Katherine Bond Stockton this essay problematises the notion of the queer child as an ‘undead’ or ghostly figure that intrudes on or haunts the life of the adult and instead suggests that in its temporal uncertainty and formal ingenuity the ‘Trilogy’ conceptualises the queer child as an unborn or new-born figure that comes into existence via present-tense acts of adult recollection and recognition. Central to this reading is an attempt to reposition the ‘Trilogy’ as a Triptych - a religiously inflected tripartite cultural object divided into three panels that encourages a circular or reciprocal engagement and asks the spectator to read across the three elements of the work rather than through them as in a traditional linear narrative

    The label Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can take various meanings given the different types of needs that exist. In the UK, Social, Emotional, Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties are a category of SEND, which can sometimes be wrongly identified as specific SEND due to the complexity of such distinctions. Professionals and researchers often overlook that perceived SEMH difficulties may instead reflect social and emotional developmental needs rather than inherent difficulties linked to SEND. This issue is exacerbated with the lack of distinction between SEND and SEMH in the SEND Code of Practice. By reviewing literature on SEMH assessment in early childhood (EC), this paper focuses on the significance of children's experiences from birth to 7. We conclude that some assessments fail to provide guidance to distinguish between SEMH difficulties and other SEND, resulting in misidentification of needs. Taking an interactionist perspective of disability, we examine three SEMH assessment models and propose that exploring children's relationships within their EC environment helps practitioners determine whether SEMH difficulties, SEND or developmental needs are present. Finally, we advocate for a relational assessment approach and broader SEMH and SEND identification practices that differentiate between difficulties, disabilities or needs if and when necessary

    A Comparative Analysis of Machine Learning and Deep Learning Techniques for Accurate Market Price Forecasting

    This study compares three machine learning and deep learning models—Support Vector Regression (SVR), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)—for predicting market prices using the NGX All-Share Index dataset. The models were evaluated using multiple error metrics, including Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Percentage Error (MPE), and R-squared. RNN and LSTM were tested with both 30 and 60-day windows, with performance compared to SVR. LSTM delivered better R-squared values, with a 60-day LSTM achieving the best accuracy (R-squared = 0.993) when using a combination of endogenous market data and technical indicators. SVR showed reliable results in certain scenarios but struggled in fold 2 with a sudden spike that shows a high probability of not capturing the entire underlying NGX pattern in the dataset correctly, as witnessed by the high validation loss during the period. Additionally, RNN faced the vanishing gradient problem that limits its long-term performance. Despite challenges, LSTM’s ability to handle temporal dependencies, especially with the inclusion of On-Balance Volume, led to significant improvements in prediction accuracy. The use of the Optuna optimisation framework further enhanced model training and hyperparameter tuning, contributing to the performance of the LSTM model

    A systematic review, and meta-analysis of pain outcomes following total elbow replacement and hemi-replacement for unreconstructible acute distal humerus fractures in adults

    BackgroundUnreconstructible distal humerus fractures have been managed with total elbow replacement (TER), but there is increasing use of hemi-replacement (DHH). Pain has been identified as the most important outcome by patients. This study aims to systematically review the literature on reported pain outcomes in adult distal humerus fractures treated with TER or DHH. MethodsMedline, Embase and Central were searched using OVID, from January 2000 to September 2023, for studies in adults undergoing DHH or TER for acute closed distal humerus fractures. The primary outcome was patient-rated pain measured on a numerical rating scale. A quantitative summary of reported outcomes was stratified by intervention type.ResultsTwenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria, including one published randomised controlled trial. Meta-analysis found a pooled average NRS pain for TER of 1.7/10 (95% CI 0.44 to 2.99) and 1.5/10 for DHH (95% CI 0.001 to 3.56). On a four-point Likert scale the pooled probability of no pain, mild pain, moderate pain, severe pain for TER was 0.75, 0.21, 0.02, 0.00 and for DHH was 0.76, 0.11, 0.12, 0.00. DiscussionThe available evidence does not enable comparison of pain outcomes between the interventions, which should be assessed in an appropriately powered randomised trial.<br/

    Investigating Low Latency Communications With Link-Layer Rate of NOMA Under Nakagami-m Fading Channel in Finite Blocklength Regime

    This paper investigates link-layer rate of two-user downlink non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA) networks under Nakagami-m fading channel with short packet communications. The overall reliability of the NOMA users is based on transmission error probability and queuing delay violation probability. We use an effective capacity tool to find the reliability and latency of the two-user with short packet communications. We derive closed-form expressions for the achievable effective capacity of both near user and far user of downlink NOMA networks with short packet communications under Nakagami-m fading channel conditions. We investigate the impact of transmit signal-to-noise ratio, delay exponent, transmission error probability, and various blocklength on the achievable effective capacity of each user. The impact of varying packet sizes (blocklength) and transmit SNR on the total achievable EC of NOMA usersare investigated in detail. We also perform Monte-Carlo simulations to validate our proposed closed-form expressions of two-user downlink NOMA

By integrating digitized herbarium records with existing biodiversity data, previously unknown plant species were uncovered, exposing critical gaps in conservation knowledge. These insights underscore the urgent need to harness herbarium data to refine conservation strategies, equip decision-makers with more precise information, and drive evidence-based policy. Maximizing the potential of these vast botanical archives can transform conservation efforts, safeguarding ecosystems essential for both planetary health and human well-being.SummaryThe world's herbaria represent an invaluable reservoir of biodiversity information, increasingly accessible through the digitization of specimens. This wealth of data serves as a critical tool for informing and shaping national conservation strategies for protected areas.By integrating herbarium data with biodiversity assessments into local management plans, a more efficient and effective approach to conservation is achieved. In species-rich countries like Honduras, biodiversity knowledge is often represented by herbarium specimens housed in institutions worldwide; however, this valuable information frequently remains excluded from protected area management plans and species lists.A case study focusing on Honduran ferns and lycophytes reveals several significant discrepancies: only 66 unique species are reported in management plans compared to 216 species identified solely in herbarium records for the same protected areas. Approximately 30% of unique species recorded in management plans lack valid vouchers deposited in herbaria. Notably, the incorporation of herbarium data highlights considerable inconsistencies in how biodiversity is reported within Honduras's protected areas, with a Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) analysis indicating a significant difference in community composition between herbarium and management plan records.To address these gaps, we propose a best practice protocol for integrating herbarium data into species lists at the local level, along with targeted determination of herbarium specimens and verification of records for national species lists

    Constraining the timing and processes of pediment formation and dissection:implications for long-term evolution in the Western Cape, South Africa

    Pediment surfaces are a widespread feature of the southern African landscape and have long been regarded as ancient landforms. Cosmogenic nuclide data from four pediment surfaces in the Gouritz catchment, Western Cape, South Africa, are reported, including boulder surface samples and a depth profile through a colluvial pediment deposit. Pediment surfaces are remarkably stable with long-term denudation rates between 0.3 and 1.0 m Myr−1, and their 10Be concentrations approach or are at secular equilibrium. Duricrusts have developed in the pediments and are preserved in some locations, which represent an internal geomorphic threshold limiting denudation and indicate at least 2 Myr of geomorphic stability following pediment formation. The pediments and the neighbouring Cape Fold Belt are deeply dissected by small-order streams that form up to 280 m deep river valleys in the resistant fold belt bedrock geology, indicating a secondary incision phase of the pediments by these smaller-order streams. Using the broader stratigraphic and geomorphic framework, the minimum age of pediment formation is considered to be Miocene. Several pediment surfaces grade above the present trunk valleys of the Gouritz River, which suggests that the trunk rivers are long-lived features that acted as local base levels during pediment formation and later incised pediments to present levels. The geomorphic processes controlling the formation and evolution of the pediments varied over time, with pediments formed by hillslope diffusive processes as shown by the lack of fluvial indicators in the colluvial deposits and later development by fluvial processes with small tributaries dissecting the pediments.     Land Pedagogy in the Metropole:A co-produced research project into community-centred knowledge in Merseyside, UK

    This paper examines a research project carried out in the city of Liverpool in Merseyside, UK, which drew on creative arts-based methodologies, popular education, and ‘post-abyssal’ epistemologies to co-create frameworks of knowledge with communities in struggle.A ‘spatial vocabulary of power’ for Merseyside was developed to render explicit the tacit, embodied knowledge of project participants of their lived experience of their local spacetime. Coupled with a creative provocation, inviting participants to consider Liverpool and its surrounding area as an ‘internal colony’, participants became de-habituated to their everyday environment. This provocation was informed by histories both of enclosure and control of land in the UK, and settler colonialism as a structure.The complex coloniser/colonised tacit knowledge of the participants was made explicit and shown to be in contradiction to the dominant ideology of capitalism, suggesting reasons why much of Merseyside has maintained an anti-capitalist counter-ideology. The resultant narrative suggests that a drama-based land pedagogy appropriate to the colonial centre can be developed so as to enable communities in struggle to transform into communities of resistance. The paper concludes by considering ways in which this aligns with pedagogies emergent in the Global South, and how they can be developed further.<br/
