The impact of physical activity on maternal mental wellbeing
Poor mental health during and after pregnancy is a key contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality, despite the potential for preventative measures. Increasing physical activity levels during pregnancy has been recognised as a potential non-pharmacological method of improving maternal mental wellbeing, yet it is not routinely discussed by healthcare professionals. The association between mental wellbeing and physical activity in the non-pregnant population has been well established, but remains overlooked in pregnancy. It is crucial that healthcare professionals are aware and understand the positive impact that being physically active during pregnancy has on maternal mental wellbeing. Encouraging and supporting women to be physically active during pregnancy can be valuable method of enhancing mental wellbeing and improving overall quality of life during and after pregnancy
Context-Aware Intrusion Detection in Vehicular Communication Networks: Enhanced Attack Modeling and Dataset
Vehicular Communication Networks (VCNs) are essential for autonomous vehicles and Intelligent Transportation Systems but face challenges in security vulnerabilities and data sparsity. Traditional attack models inadequately represent VCN dynamics, weakening threat detection, while existing datasets lack real-world mobility and spatiotemporal details. This study addresses these gaps by developing a comprehensive attack simulation framework, enhancing critical network attacks i.e. position spoofing, Sybil, and wormhole through realistic mobility patterns, positional dynamics, and temporal interactions. The resulting dataset contains legitimate and malicious instances: Spoofing (45,975 legitimate, 589 malicious), Wormhole (52,237 legitimate, 5,219 malicious), and Sybil (14,829 legitimate, 1,753 malicious). It includes essential vehicular-specific features such as mobility dynamics, inter-vehicle distances, and end-to-end communication patterns. For validation, machine learning algorithms, including Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Logistic Regression were employed. Detection performance was evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and two F1-score variants (standard and macro). Results indicate high detection efficacy, with Random Forest achieving accuracy between 93.6% and 99.8% and F1-macro scores from 88.5% to 97.7%. Compared to previous studies lacking spatiotemporal considerations, our dataset’s enhanced realism demonstrates significant potential in advancing data-driven anomaly detection and real world threat mitigation in dynamic vehicular environments
Thermal imaging responses of lower-limb muscles following anaerobic testing in male soccer players: A time-series approach
Exercise-induced thermoregulatory responses may vary by sport, yet limited evidence exists on how soccer players respond to high-intensity anaerobic testing. This study aimed to evaluate the acute changes in lower extremity muscle thermal skin temperature(Tsk) in amateur male soccer players following the Wingate anaerobic test and to determine the potential effects of moderators (dominant leg, smoking status, body height, and body fat percentage) on these responses. A total of 26 amateur male soccer players participated in this study, which employed a repeated-measures cross-sectional design. Infrared thermography(IRT) was used to record Tsk data from six anatomical locations(bilateral quadriceps, hamstrings, and gastrocnemii) at five different time points(baseline, 15 seconds, 4, 8, and 12 minutes) following a Wingate anaerobic test. Data were analyzed using the Frequentist and Bayesian repeated-measures ANOVA. The results showed a statistically significant effect of time in the right quadriceps region(p = 0.01,ηp² = 0.15,BFincl = 19.51). Post-hoc analysis indicated a significant increase in the Tsk of the right quadriceps at 12 minutes following the test, compared to baseline measurements(p = 0.02; BF10 = 17.931). Moderator analyses revealed that body fat percentage influenced Tsk responses, particularly in the quadriceps and hamstring regions(p = 0.01–0.03,ηp² = 0.25,BFincl = 3.100–3.958). Players with lower body fat showed significantly greater increases in quadriceps and hamstring muscle TSK than players with higher body fat (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study highlights a notable rise in dominant quadriceps skin temperature following high-intensity anaerobic exercise in amateur male soccer players. Body fat percentage appears to modulate these thermal responses, underlining its importance when interpreting IRT results in sports settings. These findings may have practical implications for performance monitoring and thermal recovery strategies in soccer players
Psychological Effects Related to Psychedelic Substance Use in the Previous 12 Months
Background: Although clinical trials of psychedelics have reported therapeutic benefits, the effects of illicit psychedelic use may be different because of drug quality and influences upon consumption circumstances. This study used a battery of psychological measures to examine the effects related to illicit psychedelic consumption. Method: Psychedelic use was an independent variable with two groups: recent users (i.e., within the previous 12 months: n = 33, mean age = 30.18 years [SD = 8.87 years], 18 males) and a group of nonusers and formerusers (i.e., longer ago than 12 months: n = 37, mean age = 32.47 years [SD = 12.35 years], 19 males). Participants responded online to a battery of psychometric tests. Results: Recent psychedelic users scored higher on mindfulness, openness, and arousal, self-reported fewer cognitive failures, and produced fewer errors on the WCST than former users and nonusers. Recent use of nonpsychedelic drugs emerged as a potential confound. Conclusions: The results concerning mindfulness, openness, anxiety, and depression among these users of illicitpsychedelic supplies are arguably consistent with findings from clinical trials. Further research using psychometric measures and laboratory tests with illicit psychedelic drugs is indicated

Holocaust Memory and the Universal Sovereignty of the Liberal Democratic State
Despite the large body of scholarship on global Holocaust memorialization and recent writing on the West’s preoccupation with antisemitism, the interconnection between the two issues has been largely neglected. This article seeks to fill that gap. It argues that the previous focus on the politics of identity as an explanation of global Holocaust memory politics has been misplaced. Instead, the article contends that Western states established the idea of the Holocaust’s universal meaning as central to a new political philosophy of the liberal democratic state after the Cold War. As Western policy elites anxiously attempted to assert the global sovereignty of this political form, the conceit of the Holocaust’s universal meaning played a critical role. The article goes on to argue that the systemic shock of 9/11 led to the securitization of Holocaust memory as part of the ideational defence of the liberal democratic state, and its absorption into the global surveillance order. This is the genealogy of the global North’s preoccupation with anti-Zionism as antisemitism, in which the State of Israel is protected as a totem of the liberal democratic state’s philosophical essence, and its war against the figure of the extremist. The intergovernmental act of defining antisemitism should be understood, therefore, as a feature of the state and inter-state surveillance system established in the war on terror
Device-independent Physical Activity metrics and adiposity-related indicators among children and adolescents in the United States
This study investigated associations between device-independent physical activity (PA) metrics and adiposity-related indicators among U.S. children and adolescents. Nationally representative cross-sectional data from three NHANES cycles (2011–2014) were analyzed, including 5,274 participants (weighted n = 43,156,858; 49.3% female; ages 6–17 years) who wore accelerometers on their non-dominant wrist for 7 days and had five adiposity-related indicators assessed: BMI z-score, total body and trunk fat percent (DXA), overweight/obesity (BMI), and abdominal obesity (waist-to-height ratio). Raw accelerometry data were used to calculate PA volume (Daily Monitor Independent Movement Summary [MIMS]) and intensity (Peak-60 MIMS). Survey-weighted regression models, adjusted for covariates, showed inverse associations between PA volume (B = −0.230, 95% CI: −0.334,-0.125) and intensity (B = −0.211, 95% CI: −0.250,-0.172) with total body fat percent, trunk fat percent (volume B = −0.192, 95% CI: −0.312,-0.071; intensity B = −0.227, 95% CI: −0.273,-0.181), overweight/obesity (volume OR = 0.967, 95% CI: 0.944,0.991; intensity OR = 0.953, 95% CI: 0.943,0.963) and abdominal obesity (volume OR = 0.963, 95% CI: 0.939,0.988; intensity OR = 0.951, 95% CI: 0.940,0.962). PA intensity was inversely associated with BMI z-score (B = −0.022, 95% CI: −0.028,-0.016). Stronger associations were observed during childhood and among girls. These findings highlight the importance of promoting PA, particularly higher-intensity activities, to mitigate excess adiposity and demonstrate the value of device-independent metrics for PA research
The Fairy Tales of Jim Henson:Keeping the best place by the fire
The best place by the fire proposes that Jim Henson, predominantly known for his colourful, imaginative puppetry creations in The Muppet Show and Sesame Street, has been overlooked as a significant figure in the evolution of screen fairy tales. Despite his profound contributions through various adaptations and original narratives, Henson's recognition is eclipsed by Disney's dominance of the genre and the success of his own popular family entertainment productions. However, Henson’s impact extends beyond these shows, as he innovatively integrated puppetry, technology and storytelling to develop a unique approach to the genre. This book is the first to reappraise Henson's career by foregrounding his contributions to the screen fairy tale and contests the predominant narrative that credits Disney as the foremost creative force. Utilising materials from the private Jim Henson Company Archives, it explores Henson’s distinctive approach, which engaged viewers’ imaginations by combining, and sometimes challenging and reworking, established storytelling technique and fairy tale conventions with inventive design concepts and technologies. It covers Henson high profile film and television projects Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and The Storyteller, but also lesser-known early productions that include Hey, Cinderella! and The Muppet Musicians of Bremen as well as unaired pilots such as Tales of the Tinkerdee. The book argues for Henson's recognition as a pivotal figure in screen fairy tale production, highlighting his lasting impact and the artistic innovations he brought to the genre
A-SSGC: Adaptive Graph Construction Capturing Physicochemical Commonalities for Industrial Fault Diagnosis
Accurate identification of subtle faults in industrial manufacturing remains a critical challenge, driving increased adoption of machine learning (ML) techniques. However, classical ML models often overlook complex inter-sample relationships rooted in shared physicochemical properties, thereby compromising diagnostic accuracy.Addressing this, we propose Adaptive Synergistic Similarity Graph Construction (A-SSGC), a novel algorithm that adaptively fuses multiple graph construction methods. ASSGC employs an adaptive sparsification strategy, guidedby node degrees, to capture physicochemical commonalities among samples effectively. A-SSGC significantly outperforms traditional ML models, basic graph construction techniques, and both unsupervised and semi-superviseddeep graph construction approaches. It consistently outperforms these baselines across representative graph neural networks on multiple industrial manufacturing datasets. Visualization of the constructed graphs confirms theability of A-SSGC to reveal physicochemical commonalities, thereby enhancing interpretability and supporting deeper analytical insights. By effectively capturing these commonalities, A-SSGC improves diagnostic performance. It also shows strong potential as a versatile tool for industrial data analysis, contributing to improved automation and reliability in manufacturing processes
