    Working with Risk and Uncertainty in the Context of Vulnerable Children

    This chapter considers the concept of risk in the context of working with vulnerable children. In doing so, it defines the term and explores why it has become such an important concept in children and families social work. It then considers the importance of ‘good’ risk assessment in the context of working with vulnerable children, and indeed what a ‘good risk’ assessment might look like in this sense. It considers the role and predictive value of ‘risk factors’ but also the different ‘protective factors’ which might offer a source of resilience and be an important consideration in the practitioner’s identification, assessment and management of risk. The chapter outlines the importance of hypothesis formation and testing as a means of overcoming bias when working with risk. It discusses the different approaches to risk in the sense of risk-taking/management versus risk minimisation, and explains why the former is often preferable given the ‘unpredictability of people’ and relatedly, the impossibility of eradicating or totally controlling for risk. Finally, the chapter introduces a series of strategies for how social work (and related) practitioners can better work with risk in the sense of developing a shared understanding and language of risk; ensuring defensible over defensive decision-making; and in the context of overcoming resistance and cover stories, whilst ensuring partnership with the child, parents/carers and multi-agency partners

    Scoping review of patients’ experiences and use of remote consultation for multiple long-term conditions in UK primary care

    Background: Digital exclusion and Multiple Long-Term Conditions have many risk factors in common. The impact of remote consultation, in primary care on the experience of patients living with Multiple Long-Term Conditions is poorly understood. Aim: To collate and review patients’ experiences and use of remote consultation in UK General Practice for Multiple Long-Term Conditions in relation to: a) Accessibility, b) Continuity of care, and c) Impact on patient journey. Methods: Scoping review was conducted with JBI methodology, using PRISMA-ScR statement. Data analysis was conducted using narrative synthesis. Results: A total of 8,902 abstracts were screened and 365 full texts were reviewed. This resulted in 16 included articles. The themes choice, privacy and communication quality were identified during analysis. Discussion: Majority of studies examined access, demonstrating higher need for access for people with Multiple Long-Term Conditions. Most patients would choose to see their General Practitioner (GP) face-to-face. Avoiding contagion (COVID-19), or upholding continuity were the only contexts where remote GP consultation for Multiple Long-Term Conditions was found to be acceptable to patients. Conclusion: Further research is warranted, particularly into how context and type of remote GP consultation affect the quality of communication and subsequently patient journey and outcomes

    Towards a framework of coping following severe traumatic brain injury: a grounded theory study

    Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with an array of physical, psychological and social changes. Adopting positive coping mechanisms following a TBI is important in maximising recovery outcomes including psychological wellbeing and quality of life. Using grounded theory methodology, this study explored the lived experiences of individuals recovering from severe TBI and the development of coping strategies. The research responds to a recognised gap in survivor-centred literature by prioritising the voices of individuals living with the long-term consequences of TBI. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants who sustained severe TBIs, capturing rich qualitative data on the psychological, social and cognitive challenges encountered during recovery. Five interrelated factors emerged as critical to the development of coping strategies: , and which were found to interact dynamically, with determining to adoption of . The resulting offers a survivor-informed framework that provides new insights into recovery processes following severe TBI. This research highlights the importance of tailored psychological support and the need for interventions that consider the multifaceted nature of coping. The model has practical implications for neurorehabilitation services and contributes to the advancement of personalised care for TBI survivors

    Functionally Grouping Male Runners Based upon Individual Responses to Motion Control Running Shoes: A Laboratory Based Proof-of-Concept Study

    Individual responses to different running shoes may offer a means of functionally grouping runners. Thus, the aim of this exploratory study was to explore whether changes in rearfoot eversion between running shoes with different motion control properties could be used to functionally group male runners and to explore the characteristics of each functional group. Fifty male participants ran at the same self-selected velocity, along a 20 m runway in standardised motion control and neutral/cushioned running shoes. Rearfoot motion was recorded using a 10-camera motion capture system. Functional groups were identified based upon changes in peak rearfoot eversion between footwear conditions. Positive responders displayed a reduction of ≥ 3°, negative responders an increase of ≥ 3° and non-responders changes within ± 3° when running in the motion control shoe. Eighteen participants were classified as positive, seven negative and 25 non-responders to the motion control running shoe. Exploration of participant characteristics, running velocity and rearfoot kinematics revealed that peak eversion in the neutral/cushioned running shoe and the change in peak eversion and eversion excursion between footwear conditions were significantly (p ≤ 0.021) different between responder groups. Positive responders displayed the greatest peak eversion in the neutral/cushioned running shoe and the largest reduction in both peak eversion and eversion excursion when running in the motion control shoe. In contrast, negative responders displayed the lowest peak eversion in the neutral/cushioned running shoe and smallest changes in eversion excursion in the motion control shoe. These findings highlight the feasibility of functionally grouping runners based upon their response to motion control running shoes and suggest that the magnitude of peak eversion influences responses to motion control running shoes

    Collaboration for musical learning

    The purpose of this chapter is to enhance understanding and knowledge of the various possibilities and opportunities that collaboration can bring into secondary school music education. The chapter positions collaboration as a way of enhancing experience, learning and teaching for all involved. The benefits and challenges of collaboration are raised, situated within the wider context of music education policy and the complexities of individual teacher background, values and identity. Examples are provided of with whom a secondary school music teacher might collaborate , including collaborations within a teacher’s school, with feeder primary schools, instrumental teachers, musicians and higher education institutions. The reader is encouraged to thoughtfully consider the potential and scope of collaborations within their own context, and to take the first steps in the collaborative planning process. Models and theories are offered to frame the concept of collaboration, and conditions that can be put into place for collaborations to thrive are suggested

    Monitoring of the resin flow front within a resin transfer moulding during fabrication using fibre Bragg gratings

    Composite structures are becoming significantly larger. Discarding these large structures due to manufacturing defects is unacceptable due to cost, time, and environmental concerns. To mitigate the risk of defects, real-time monitoring of resin flow during infusion is needed to ensure complete wetting of glass mats. However, current studies lack real-time flow-front monitoring, relying instead on manual post-production checks, and may result in costly repairs or disposal of defective parts. Fibre Bragg grating sensors have been shown to spectrally respond to resin during infusion, but the physical mechanism behind this response—crucial for interpreting flow front location and direction—has not been investigated. For the first time we report an in-depth study of fibre Bragg grating sensors for real-time monitoring of the flow front of liquids in the resin transfer moulding (RTM) infusion process and the mechanisms that produce the spectral response based upon the viscous force generated by the liquid and its flow-front. We present experimental wavelength shift data of the fibre Bragg grating sensors during infusion to show that viscous force is the dominant mechanism. Furthermore, we created a model that shows good agreement with experimental data, the model predicts wavelength shifts of the sensors at different locations to the approaching flow-front. Current model can aid numerical simulations of the infusion process to ensure complete impregnation of glass reinforcement mats

    This volume explores various connections between animals and landscapes, challenging traditional anthropocentric framings and acknowledging the agency of other-than-human species in shaping our surroundings.A critical departure from traditional perspectives, Animals and Landscapes challenges the prevalent anthropocentric and ocularcentric approaches to the scenic landscape. Instead, the contributors adopt a multispecies lens, prioritising the more-than-human and illuminating the intricate relationships between bodies, actions, and place. The chapters navigate a range of environments, exploring visual and aesthetic experiences as well as the entanglements of place, action, bodies, and subjectivities. In doing so the authors discuss historical, geographical, social, economic, and cultural frameworks that shape landscapes, revealing the often-ignored agency of non-human species.Moving beyond human-centric framings of landscapes, it acknowledges the active role that other species play in shaping, using, and producing these environments. Central to this thematic exploration is the idea that animals have their own geographies and act as place-making agents. Underscoring the dynamic role animals play in shaping the spaces they inhabit, this volume encourages a re-evaluation of the narratives that have predominantly marginalised the role of animals in shaping our understanding of place.This interdisciplinary book will appeal to academics and students of sociology, visual culture, geography, and cultural studies, film, and media and television studies with interests in landscape studies and human-animal studies

    From the perspectives of two ECRs, this chapter highlights the unspoken but ever-prevalent hurdles of data collection. There is discussion surrounding the planning and co-ordination of data collection, from reaching out to potential research participants to the organising of consent and location, and while we do not intend to overwhelm or predict your journey, we hope to offer solace and practical advice to guide you through. Woven throughout are real-life examples experienced by the authors, reflections which demonstrate that sometimes, the co-ordination of data collection is not as seamless as initially thought. The real ‘nitty gritty’ of qualitative research is the behind-the-scenes work you will do over the course of organising your data collection, and the authors of this chapter look to speak to the opportunities and challenges you may face within this segment of the research process, no matter where you are located or what your previous research experience has been
