Sedimentary facies and invertebrate faunal exchange confirm humid conditions in the tropical eastern Atlantic during interglacial Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 11c

The geological study of Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 11c (424-397 ka) is key to reconstructing the climatic and oceanographic conditions during one of the longest and the warmest interglacial in the last 1 million years. Moreover, interglacial MIS 11c is considered as an important analogue for our near future in times of climate change, under anthropogenic emissions scenarios, due to its similar orbital forcing configuration. Here we present the results of a comprehensive analysis of one of the most extensive Quaternary fossiliferous sedimentary successions in the Cabo Verde archipelago in the tropical northeastern Atlantic. The Nossa Senhora da Luz Bay (Santiago Island) is one of the few MIS 11 fossiliferous sites known in Macaronesia. The sedimentary succession records a set of transitions between fluvial and marine environments, and emersion and immersion events within a confined, highly protected bay environment. A thick layer of fine-branched rhodoliths in its upper part suggests ecological conditions that no longer exist in Cabo Verde. The presence of specimens of the intertidal clam Senilia senilis in life position ∼12 m above present-day mean sea level leads us to reinterpret the relative sea-level changes at Santiago Island and show that the uplift trend since MIS 11c is an order of magnitude lower (0.01 mm/yr) than previously calculated (0.10 to 0.14 mm/yr). The fossil assemblage includes representatives of five phyla, with molluscs being the most diverse and abundant. Despite the abundance of some bivalves (Saccostrea cuccullata, S. senilis, and Aequipecten opercularis), and gastropods (Thetystrombus latus and Thais nodosa), and some horizons showing the crustacean burrows Thalassinoides suevicus, the general biodiversity is low. The presence of S. cuccullata and S. senilis, both absent from present-day Cabo Verde archipelago, indicates a tropical, more humid climate in this region, during MIS 11c

The mnemonic warriors of the European far right : memory politics, laws, narratives

    No full text
The Mnemonic Warriors of the European Far Right is a comparative analysis of the politics and policy of memory as seen through the conceptual lens of Pierre Nora’s lieux de mémoire. More specifically, the research in this volume is carried out through the prism of national-populist and conservative-sovereignist narratives in the Western, Central, and Eastern European public sphere. The overall aim of this book is to examine how the European populist far right, both the governing elites and those operating on the fringes of mainstream politics, has adopted the instrumentalization of 20th-century authoritarian and totalitarian lieux de mémoire to boost their political legitimacy. The contributors to this volume explore critically the interplay between politics and collective memory, the role of historical myths in shaping collective consciousness, and the manipulation mechanisms of political communication aimed at monopolizing the “real” memory of the past. They explore how different and sometimes mutually exclusive narratives about “places of memory” interact in the public sphere of societies that have experienced non-democratic regimes in their history. This volume will be of interest to researchers of European history and politics, the far right, populism, and memory studies

Political actors' narratives on the reforms of the European Union : future visions of Europe?

    No full text
This book provides essential insights into contemporary political actors’ narratives of European integration. Focusing on the Future of Europe debate in parliaments, the book reveals how the question of democracy in Europe is addressed. Through the lens of differentiation, it explores the numerous nuances within narratives on the EU. Based on an extensive empirical analysis of debates from 11 national parliaments and the European Parliament over a period of seven years (2015–2021), it provides substantial understanding of the circulation of ideas on Europe within and among member states. Finally, the book offers a reflection on reforming the EU and the different constitutional narratives shaping the future of the EU. This book is of key interest to scholars and students interested in European integration, the European Parliament, democracy and political parties

Prognostic value of collateral scoring systems for hemorrhagic transformation after endovascular treatment in acute ischemic stroke

    No full text
Purpose: Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) represents a serious complication in the management of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), particularly following endovascular treatment (EVT). While clinical predictors of HT have been widely studied, the prognostic value of imaging-based collateral scoring systems remains less well defined. The main purpose of the study is to evaluate the prognostic accuracy of four commonly used collateral scoring systems – Miteff, Maas, modified Tan, the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score – and combinations of them, with established variables for predicting HT in AIS patients treated with EVT beyond the 4.5-hour window. Material and methods: This retrospective single-center study included 162 AIS patients who underwent EVT between 2017 and 2023. Patients with baseline computed tomography angiography and follow-up computed tomography were included; those receiving thrombolysis were excluded. Collateral status was assessed using four scoring systems. HT was confirmed by imaging. Patients were divided into HT and non-HT groups. Statistical analysis included χ2 tests, binary logistic regression, and ROC curve analysis and evaluation of predictive models (Collateral Model and Integrated Clinical-Collateral Model). Significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: None of the individual collateral scoring systems reached statistical significance as independent predictors of HT. The Collateral Model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.837 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.769-0.906), indicating acceptable discrimination. The Integrated Clinical-Collateral Model further improved predictive performance, with an AUC of 0.933 (95% CI: 0.883-0.983), reflecting excellent accuracy. Conclusions: While individual collateral scoring systems showed limited value in predicting HT risk, their combined use improved prognostic accuracy. The predictive accuracy was even better when collateral scores were integrated with established clinical and imaging predictors
