Environmental policy and the dynamics of industrial location and residential choice
Environmental issues have an international dimension, with causes and consequences that extend beyond national borders—including the effects of the policies designed to address them. This paper investigates how different levels of environmental regulation influence the long-term spatial distribution of firms and households. The results suggest that only highly asymmetric regulations align with the Pollution Haven Hypothesis, causing firms to cluster in areas with lax environmental standards. In contrast, moderate differences in regulation tend to improve environmental quality across regions and can generate positive spillovers for countries adopting greener policies, such as attracting new residents and stimulating investment. While this lends support to the Porter Hypothesis, it does so through a less conventional mechanism. Rather than fostering innovation, stringent regulations enhances regional attractiveness by expanding the market size
Esigenze collettive, funzione dei beni e arte pubblica: per una rigenerazione urbana partecipata
L’esaurimento progressivo delle risorse naturali e materiali ha riacceso l’attenzione sul tema della gestione collettiva dei beni, quale possibile risposta alla crisi dei modelli tradizionali di proprietà e amministrazione. Nel presente intervento si affronta la questione della gestione collettiva dei beni, analizzando congiuntamente la disciplina degli usi civici e dei domini collettivi, come prevista dalla legge n. 168/2017, e le pratiche di gestione condivisa dei beni comuni emergenti. Tali due ambiti trovano un comune fondamento nella medesima cornice teorica: la rilettura della disciplina proprietaria alla luce dei principi costituzionali, in particolare del principio della funzione sociale di cui all’art. 42.2 della Costituzione.
L’intervento si è soffermato in particolare sulle esperienze di autogoverno collettivo sviluppatesi nel Comune di Napoli, ove alcune comunità cittadine hanno attivato forme di gestione partecipata di beni pubblici precedentemente abbandonati, attraverso lo strumento dell’uso civico urbano. Tali beni, restituiti alla fruizione pubblica, sono stati trasformati in spazi culturali aperti e accessibili a tutti i cittadini. Si tratta di esperienze emblematiche di rigenerazione urbana partecipata, fondate su un modello di gestione collettiva e culturale delle risorse, in cui si attua un processo di recupero, trasformazione e innovazione dei beni comuni urbani, con il coinvolgimento diretto delle comunità residenti nei territori interessati
The Resume Project: Numerical Analyses and Laboratory Test
Europe faces significant challenges due to seismic activity, which frequently leads to extensive damage, particularly in seismically active regions such as Italy. Recent destructive earthquakes have underscored the urgent need for innovative strategies to improve the seismic resilience and energy efficiency of existing buildings. The RESUME project addresses these challenges by proposing an integrated approach to seismic and energy retrofitting. Its innovative methodology combines structural reinforcement with thermal insulation improvements, targeting reinforced concrete (RC) structures originally designed only for vertical loads. A key feature of the project is the development of a “dry seismic coat,” composed of cork panels paired with a composite timber-aluminum alloy exoskeleton. This system enhances both the seismic and energy performance of retrofitted buildings by simultaneously improving strength, stiffness, and thermal insulation. This article presents the implementation and preliminary results of shaking table tests conducted at the IZIIS Laboratory in Skopje. These tests involved infilled and retrofitted three-dimensional RC frames subjected to simulated seismic loads. The experimental program was designed to assess critical aspects such as: (1) the effectiveness of the retrofitting system in enhancing seismic safety, (2) the comparative energy performance of the system relative to conventional insulation methods, (3) the feasibility of a combined seismic-energy vulnerability assessment methodology for RC buildings. Thus, the present paper details the design, setup, and execution of the tests, focusing on the experimental setup, specimen construction and instrumentation, and loading protocol development. Preliminary results are also presented highlighting the retrofitting system’s capacity to improve seismic behavior, while also indicating potential gains in energy efficiency, paving the way for further research outcomes
Span-Depth Ratios for the preliminary structural design of steel beams: The case of European hot-rolled I sections without lateral-torsional buckling
Preliminary sizing, based on "Shape Ratios" or “Depth-to-Span Ratios”, plays a key role in the design process, both during the conceptual stage and in the validation and verification phases of structural design, representing one of the main index parameters. Shape ratios, whether global or local, are revisited herein as a contemporary reinterpretation of the classical “Theory of Proportions” and can be derived either through structural analogies or by means of parametric analyses that investigate the main variables influencing the demand and capacity of the structural systems under study. Adopting a parametric approach, this work investigates the shape ratios of European hot-rolled narrow-flange I-sections subjected to different boundary conditions (loads and supports) and produced with the principal grades of structural steel. The objective is the validation and disaggregation of the datasets reported in the literature, with the aim of enabling their more reliable and effective use in structural design, both through conventional methods and advanced digital tools, including Building Information Modeling (BIM) environments implemented via parametric families of members or systems. The results allow for the evaluation of alternative design configurations already at the conceptual stage, while also serving as an efficient tool for structural optimization, which can be further enhanced through algorithmic strategies underpinning Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Frank Lloyd Wright, together with Le Corbusier, represents the greatest protagonist of 20th century architecture. Both were great architects and no one influenced the world of architectural culture like them. In the difference of their choices of field, they were true revolutionaries. Wright has been celebrated everywhere with many books that have detailed his work and made him the protagonist of some masterly exhibitions that have then become a reference for many generations of architects, given his long career and the many different moments always closely linked to the organic architecture of which he was the protagonist and founder. So why write another book about his work? The book was born from an idea of the writer to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the death of the American master. Celebrate him, through some writings of scholars who deal with history and theory, urban planning and cities, technologies and construction materials, composition and architectural design in their university commitment, to give an interdisciplinary reading consistent with what Wright has left as a legacy. The themes addressed by the authors of these writings in his honor, in fact, have been interpreted from time to time by the American master himself through his work where his cultural and prophetic teachings can be found.
The book therefore wants to give a contribution to Wright’s poetics as a resource for teaching architecture, making the value of his sacred message significant once again.
