    Toward Generalized Multi-Typological Classification of Cultural Heritage: a Random Forest Approach

    The increasing adoption of point clouds in the digital documentation of Cultural Heritage (CH) has made three-dimensional semantic segmentation a key step for data interpretation and analysis. In this context, Deep Learning (DL) approaches have demonstrated high performance, albeit at the cost of substantial computational requirements and the need for large annotated datasets. Within this framework, the present study investigates the potential of leveraging a traditional supervised Machine Learning (ML) approach - Random Forest (RF) - through targeted optimization of training and validation procedures. To this end, the RF_CHC (Random Forest for Cultural Heritage Classification) model is proposed. Aimed at improving accuracy and, in particular, generalization capability in the semantic classification of architectural CH point clouds, RF_CHC integrates statistical hyperparameter calibration through the adoption of cross-validation procedures. The performance of RF_CHC was evaluated and compared with literature models (RF4PCC and optimized RF4PCC), demonstrating improved classification consistency and greater robustness across heterogeneous datasets, while highlighting the potential of an optimized ML-based approach as a competitive or complementary solution to currently prevalent DL models in the CH domain

    The versatility and effectiveness of impinging synthetic jets (SJs) for cooling applications have pushed the scientific community to optimise the design of these devices by investigating the impact of various flow parameters, such as the stroke length, the Reynolds number and the shape of the driving electric signal. The current work delves into the influence of the nozzle exit section shape (NESS) on the heat transfer behaviour of SJs. In addition to the circular baseline case, three different shapes are comparatively assessed: the triangle, the square and the rectangular NESS. Phase-locked 2D infrared thermography (IRT) measurements are carried out for five nozzle-to-plate distances: H/D∈[2,4,6,8,10], whereas the Reynolds and Strouhal numbers are kept constant and equal to Re = 3500 and Sr = 0.068, respectively. It is shown that the heat transfer behaviour of the SJ is significantly modified by the shape of the nozzle exit section, especially for short impingement distances. Upon ejection, the coherent vortical structures are shaped as the nozzle from which it is issued. As the vortical structures are convected downstream, they lose their geometrical coherence due to inertial instabilities. Indeed, at small nozzle-to-plate distances, the time-averaged Nu maps show the signature of the impinging vortical structures in the thermal pattern. At high nozzle-to-plate distances, however, the SJ's thermal footprint on the foil is almost bell-shaped, with all NESSs achieving a heat transfer behaviour similar to the circular nozzle. The highest time-averaged heat transfer rates are achieved with either the circular or rectangular NESS, depending on the impingement distance; the circular configuration is favoured at low H/D, while the rectangular configuration performs better at high H/D. Additionally, phase-averaged measurements revealed the jet axis-switching phenomenon for the triangular and rectangular NESS at H/D=6

    In geotechnical and agricultural problems, estimating the evolution of the hydrological state of the subsoil shallow layers is crucial for addressing stability. In large areas and over long periods, this requires theoretical predictions based on monitoring of weather conditions. In modelling the soil–atmosphere interaction, actual evapotranspiration is often estimated as a fraction of the potential evapotranspiration (computed from a reference potential evapotranspiration -RE- and a crop coefficient), basing on water availability in the topsoil. The paper presents a study aimed at deriving the trend in evaporative process under different crop conditions and the related drying-induced decays for a silty pyroclastic layer. The work is based on an experiment in which small containers, filled with the same silty pyroclastic soil, were prepared with three different crop conditions: bare, grass vegetated, and covered with burnt wood residues. Containers were exposed to dry weather conditions to characterize the different evolution of the evaporation processes, quantified by weighing the containers, and linked to RE by monitoring meteorological variables at the test site. The paper shows that the evolution of evaporation processes differs significantly for bare, vegetated and heterogeneous conditions, allowing quantification of crop coefficient and drying-induced decay for each case

    Dopo dieci anni dall’entrata in vigore del TUSP operare un bilancio sulla portata di tale normativa costituisce un utile riscontro per riflettere ulteriormente, considerato anche il crescente ricorso allo strumento societario da parte delle pubbliche amministrazioni, su una materia che si colloca in una terra di mezzo tra il diritto pubblico e il diritto privato. In questi anni si è cercato di conciliare la logica imprenditoriale, dell’efficienza e profitto, dell’autonomia gestionale, del rischio d’impresa con la finalizzazione pubblica, interesse pubblico, indirizzo politico e la responsabilità erariale. La riflessione dovrà riguardare non soltanto il livello di adeguamento delle amministrazioni alle prescrizioni del legislatore del TUSP ma, altresì, affrontare le problematicità che persistono: si pensi alla necessità di una maggiore chiarezza sul perimetro delle società soggette al TUSP; a un rafforzamento del ruolo della Corte dei Conti; alla semplificazione degli obblighi specie per motivazioni, atti di gara e alienazioni; attenzione ai sistemi di governance e compensi con possibili deroghe motivate; al coordinamento con le altre fonti del diritto all’interno di un sistema ordinamentale complesso ma unitario e in particolare con il Codice della crisi e le discipline di settore. In questi termini, il quadro normativo è in continua evoluzione e occorre far fronte alle nuove sfide del settore con la valutazione di eventuali azioni correttive e l’individuazione di misure idonee a garantire e ove necessario rafforzare, l’attuazione del quadro giuridico del TUSP
