Application of Acheta domesticus powder in food: impact on sensory, rheological, and functional properties
In recent years, house cricket powder has gained attention in the European market as an innovative food ingredient due to its rich nutritional content and low environmental impact. Crickets are rich in protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals, making them a promising alternative protein source in the food industry. This study reviews 48 studies on the effects of Acheta domesticus powder on the sensory, rheological, and functional properties of food products, including meat, pasta, bread, biscuits, cookies, pancakes, snacks, crackers, muffins, and complementary foods like porridge . The studies evaluated substitution levels of cricket powder ranging from 1 % to 75 %. The primary outcomes revealed that substituting with cricket powder increases protein, fat, and micronutrient content while lowering carbohydrate levels and reducing the glycemic index of the products. Despite these benefits, high levels of cricket powder substitution may negatively affect the products' physicochemical, functional, rheological and sensory properties, thus reducing consumer acceptance. Future research should focus on improving the taste, texture, and overall quality of cricket powder-based foods to enhance consumer acceptance and facilitate broader integration of insect-based ingredients into the food market
“When Will You Graduate?”—A Qualitative Study on Academic Procrastination Among Italian University Students
Background: In contemporary societies, the pursuit of performance and the experience of urgency emerge as dominant forces shaping individual lives. In this context, delaying behaviors assume particular significance, especially for university students, who are immersed in environments that seem to prioritize speed and efficiency as the main routes to adulthood. The pressure to be flawless and fast, coupled with uncertainty about the future, calls for reflection on procrastination, its impact on psychological well-being, and the role of educational institutions. This study explored university students’ opinions and experiences regarding academic procrastination. Methods: Ten focus groups were conducted with 89 students enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program. All focus groups were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The corpus was analyzed using Thematic Analysis of Elementary Contexts and Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Results: The former, a cluster-based thematic procedure, identified seven clusters capturing both the organizational aspects of university life and the experience of being a student in contemporary society. The secondary thematic analysis further explored these dimensions, emphasizing themes such as social pressure and concerns about the future. Conclusions: Findings suggest that understanding the dynamics underlying procrastination can inform university policies attuned to young adults’ developmental needs and well-being

Efficacy of Mediterranean diet for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis featured in the Italian National Guidelines “La Dieta Mediterranea”
Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with secondary prevention a public health priority. Diet is a modifiable risk factor, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) has shown benefits in primary prevention. However, its role in patients already affected by CVD remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between adherence to MD and recurrent cardiovascular events, mortality, and intermediate health outcomes in individuals with established CVD. Methods This review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 and MOOSE guidelines. A comprehensive search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library was performed up to February 28, 2024. The certainty of evidence was evaluated with the NUTRIGRADE approach. Pooled effect sizes were computed using a random-effects model and expressed as risk ratios (RR), hazard ratios, or odds ratios, as appropriate. Results Nineteen studies (4 randomized controlled trials—RCTs, 15 cohorts) involving over 91 000 participants were included. Higher adherence to MD was associated with a reduced risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in cohorts (RR 0.95, 95% CI: 0.93–0.97) and RCTs (RR 0.44, 95% CI: 0.20–0.94), and reduced mortality in cohorts (RR 0.96, 95% CI: 0.95–0.98) and RCTs (RR 0.27, 95% CI: 0.13–0.55). Effects on blood pressure and lipid profile were not significant, while effects on body composition were non-significant. Certainty of evidence ranged from low to high depending on the different outcomes. Conclusions Higher adherence to the MD is associated with clinically meaningful reductions in recurrent cardiovascular events and mortality among CVD patients. These findings support incorporating MD-based recommendations into secondary prevention guidelines and public health strategies
Innovative reinforced aluminium alloy curtain walls: Numerical analysis and experimental validation
Aluminium curtain walls are a prevalent choice for the building facade due to their lightweight nature, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic qualities. However, the high deformability of aluminium alloys poses challenges in meeting serviceability requirements under wind and seismic loads, particularly building sway. This study investigates a novel reinforced aluminium curtain wall profile designed to overcome these limitations. The research introduces an innovative prestressed aluminium alloy profile, internally reinforced with tensioned steel cables. Both numerical simulations and experimental validation are presented. Multiple reinforcement configurations are analyzed to determine the optimal arrangement for enhancing stiffness and structural strength. Nonlinear finite element analyses, conducted using ABAQUS, assess the sensitivity to the number and placement of reinforcing cables. The most effective configuration identified through simulation is selected for subsequent experimental testing. Results: from the simulations indicate up to an 86 % reduction in deflection compared to conventional aluminium profiles. Experimental validation showed a 5 % increase in structural stiffness, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed reinforcement system. These enhancements in lateral drift control and load-bearing capacity demonstrate the potential of the proposed solution to balance structural performance
