Sorption and mass transport of water in polyimides: quantifying first- and second-shell and their dynamics
Water sorption thermodynamics in glassy polymers is a salient issue in the context of accurately modeling membrane-based separation processes and tailoring the barrier properties of polymers for various technological applications. To this end, the water sorption thermodynamics of glassy polymers, two polyimides (6FDA-ODA and 6FDA-6FpDA), and a polyetherimide (Ultem®) have been interpreted within the framework of the Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics Glassy Polymer-Perturbed Chain-Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (NETGP-PC-SAFT). This approach accounts for associative contributions, thereby enabling the quantitative reproduction of the complex interactional scenario exhibited by the three systems analyzed. This investigation also provided, for the first time, a validation of the NETGP-PC-SAFT model when self and cross-interactions occur in a polymer-penetrant system, by comparing model predictions with data from vibrational spectroscopy. Indeed, this theoretical approach enabled the quantitative estimation of the various types of sorbed water populations (i.e., water molecules that form the first and second hydration shells, respectively, related to water-polymer and water-water hydrogen bonding interactions) that successfully corresponded to the experimental outcomes. This interactional scenario has been further investigated through Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations aimed at determining hydrogen-bonding energies and at confirming the involved interactive sites suggested by in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Following the validation of the NETGP-PC-SAFT model in terms of sorption thermodynamics, the model was implemented within the Standard Diffusion (SD) model to self-consistently describe water mass transport in the glassy PEI. This approach yielded a satisfactory data fit for the overall water sorption kinetics and concurrently predicted the time-evolution of the two distinct water populations with excellent concurrence to the experimental outcomes derived from in situ vibrational spectroscopy
EM-BIM: VPL interoperable processes for paradata management in archaeological virtual reconstructions using Extended Matrix (EM) and bSDD as knowledge representation systems
The paper presents a two-phase methodological protocol for creating an Extended Matrix (EM) based BIM model (EM-BIM). The EM, developed by the ISPC-CNR institute, was designed to manage data, metadata, and paradata related to virtual reconstructions in archaeology. This research introduces a methodology for geometric and informational modelling, based on an HBIM approach, of existing architectural heritage using EM tools within Historical Building Information Modelling (HBIM) approach. Knowledge-based structure of EM is similar to object-based system of BIM: both methodologies are grounded in a relational approach to 3D data structuring. Furthermore, EM explicitly incorporates paradata using a visual knowledge graph system. Tested on the Doric Stoa of Priene, the first phase of the study focused on decoding the graphic language of EM to automatically generate and populate ad hoc descriptors within the HBIM environment using a visual programming language (VPL). A second phase involved the setting up of a BuildingSMART Data Dictionary (bsDD) to map the EM classification against the IFC classes, to standardise the generation of dedicated ‘property sets’
Rethinking the Indexation of Retirement Age: Cohort vs. Period Life Expectancy
Over the past two centuries, life expectancy has risen steadily in industrialized countries, challenging the financial sustainability of pen-sion systems. In systems with indexed pension age, a key issue is whether to use period life expectancy (PLE) or cohort life expectancy (CLE). CLE relies on real cohort data and captures future mortality improve-ments; requiring a full lifespan of data, it can be estimated only for extinct cohorts. To address this, CLE is often estimated using life tables combining past and expected future mortality. In contrast, PLE is basedonmortalityratesobservedinasingleperiod.Itissimplerbutlessaccu-ratethanCLE,particularlywhenassessingtheretirementsystemssus-tainability.Theaimofthispaperistwofold:measuringthegapbetweenCLEandPLEatage65forItalianpopulationusingLee-CarterandRenshaw-Habermanmodelsformortalityprojections,andassessinghowthisgapaffectsthepensionageshift
Risankizumab super responders in moderate-to-severe psoriasis: prevalence, predictors, and long-term maintenance in a multicenter, international, real-world cohort
Background/objectives: The concept of super responders (SRs) has gained increasing attention in psoriasis. However, evidence focusing exclusively on risankizumab remains limited. This multicenter, international, real-world study aimed to assess the prevalence, predictors, and long-term maintenance of SR status among patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis treated with risankizumab. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted across 10 Italian and Portuguese referral centers. SRs were defined as patients achieving complete skin clearance (PASI 0) at week 20. Predictors of SR achievement and maintenance were assessed using multivariate logistic regression models at weeks 52, 104, and 130 (2.5 years). Results: A total of 1372 patients were included (mean PASI 14.9 ± 8.2). At week 20, 610 (44.5%) achieved PASI 0 and were classified as SRs; 84.4% maintained this status at week 52 and 64.9% at 2.5 years. Biologic-naïve status (OR 1.65; p < 0.001) predicted SR achievement, whereas palmoplantar psoriasis (OR 0.58; p = 0.005) and higher BMI (OR 0.96; p = 0.011) negatively influenced it. Biologic-naïve status remained the strongest predictor of long-term maintenance (OR 2.87; p = 0.003). Conclusions: Risankizumab demonstrated high and sustained long-term effectiveness, inducing rapid and sustained complete clearance in a substantial proportion of patients
