Polylactic acid versus polypropylene microplastics: ecotoxicological effects on Gammarus aequicauda using a multi-level approach
This study compared the effects of microplastics (MPs) originating from a fossil-based polymer (polypropylene, PP) and a bioplastic (polylactic acid, PLA) on the amphipod Gammarus aequicauda . Microplastics (38–220 μm) derived from commercial disposable products were used to evaluate acute toxicity, yielding 96-h LC50 values of >100 mg/L for PLA and 34.71 mg/L for PP. Both MP types were further tested under sub-lethal conditions (5 mg/L) over a 60-day exposure period to assess impacts on growth and reproduction. Chronic exposure resulted in a significant reduction in growth in both PLA- and PP-treated groups beginning at day 45, with PP-exposed individuals also showing the lowest survival rates. Additionally, PLA and PP exposure prolonged embryonic development compared with controls. Reproductive impairment was most pronounced in the PP treatment, which exhibited significant decreases in the number of ovigerous females and in total offspring, alongside an increase in aborted eggs. Seven stress-related genes were identified for the first time in G. aequicauda , and their expression was quantified by RT-qPCR following 15, 30, and 45 days of exposure. Gene expression profiles showed complex, time-dependent responses, with both MP types inducing largely similar transcriptional patterns by day 45, characterized by up-regulation of most target genes. Overall, the results demonstrate that commercially derived PP and PLA microplastics can elicit physiological and reproductive stress in G. aequicauda , underscoring their potential ecological risk

The Magic Curiosity Arousing Tricks (MagicCATs) database in Italian younger and middle-aged adults: Descriptive statistics and rule-based machine learning
Epistemic emotions, and in particular curiosity, seem to enhance memory for both the specific information that stimulates the individual’s curiosity and information presented in close temporal proximity. Most studies on memory and curiosity have adopted trivia questions to elicit curiosity. However, the amount and range of interest that trivia questions elicit are unclear, and there is no established, universal trivia item pool guaranteed to elicit comparable levels of curiosity across individuals of all ages. Thus, one substantial challenge when studying curiosity is systematically inducing it in controlled experimental settings. Recently, an innovative database called Magic Curiosity Arousing Tricks (MagicCATs) has been published. This database includes 166 short magic-trick video clips that adopt different materials and is designed to induce curiosity, surprise, and interest. Here, we aimed to validate this dataset in the Italian population by reporting the basic characteristics and the norms of the magic-trick video clips in younger and middle-aged adults. We also carried out association rule learning, a rule-based machine learning and data mining method to aid understanding of the co-occurrences between the different epistemic emotions and aid researchers in stimulus selection. Association rules underline relationships or associations between the variables in our datasets and can be used in association with descriptive statistics for stimulus selection in psychological experiments

Sublethal Nitrite Exposure Alters Redox Status and Metabolic Functions in Adult Zebrafish
Nitrite pollution in aquatic environments, often driven by human activity, can disrupt fish physiology. Nitrite is absorbed by freshwater fish through their gills, leading to internal accumulation and interference with nitric oxide (NO) signaling, redox state, and the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. The effects of nitrite are concentration-dependent. Although moderate environmental nitrite levels have little impact on oxygen transport, they may still interfere with NO homeostasis and cellular metabolism. We report the effects of 72 h of exposure to 10 μM nitrite on adult zebrafish blood’s O2-carrying capacity and on muscle mitochondrial activity, metabolism, and redox state. The results show that this environmentally relevant but moderate concentration of nitrite leads to decreases in fish routine oxygen consumption (rMO2) and spontaneous activity, an increase in blood nitrosyl hemoglobin (HbNO), indicating increased NO production in the blood, accumulation of nitrite in muscle tissue, oxidative stress, and changes in muscle aerobic capacity linked to a rise in mitochondrial efficiency. Parallel to these effects, increases in antioxidant capacity, arginase activity, and urea and lactate levels were observed. Globally, these results are consistent with altered NO homeostasis in the fish body induced by nitrite stress. © 2026 by the authors
