Conflicted Help-Seeking: Vulnerable and Grandiose Narcissistic Traits in College Students
This study highlights distinct patterns in help-seeking behavior among college students with narcissistic traits, focusing on grandiose and vulnerable manifestations of these traits. Two undergraduate samples (N₁ = 398, N₂ = 424) completed measures of narcissistic traits, stigma, psychological distress, and help-seeking intentions. Higher levels of vulnerable narcissistic traits were positively linked to help-seeking willingness, with indirect effects through heightened distress (positive) and stigma (negative). In contrast, grandiose narcissistic traits showed no consistent direct or indirect effects on help-seeking behavior. These findings reveal that students with elevated vulnerable narcissistic traits may experience conflicting motivations for seeking help – driven by distress but hindered by stigma – whereas those with elevated grandiose narcissistic traits generally exhibit indifference to professional help. College mental health services should tailor outreach efforts by addressing stigma to better engage students with vulnerable narcissistic traits and consider alternative strategies to connect with those exhibiting grandiose narcissistic traits. Understanding how these trait dimensions affect help-seeking can inform more targeted interventions to improve mental health service utilization on campus
Oriented Surface Immobilization of Antibodies Using Enzyme-Mediated Site-Specific Biotinylation for Enhanced Antigen-Binding Capacity
The effectiveness of surface-immobilized antibodies is often diminished by improper antibody orientation and limited stability, impeding the analytical performance of biosensors. Here, we report a novel enzyme-mediated strategy to biotinylate the Fc region of an anti-horseradish peroxidase (anti-HRP) antibody with site-specificity that enables oriented immobilization on a streptavidin-functionalized surface. Microbial transglutaminase (mTG) catalyzes the covalent coupling between the amine functional group on a biotin analogue (NH2-PEG4-biotin) and the side chain of a privileged glutamine residue (Q295) located on the heavy chain Fc region of IgG antibodies. For comparison, an anti-HRP antibody was biotinylated using an amine-reactive biotin analogue (NHS-PEG4-biotin) to covalently couple to lysine residues randomly located throughout the antibody. The antibody that reacted with a 40-fold excess of biotin reagent formed conjugates with a biotin-to-antibody ratio of 1.9 ± 0.3 and 5.0 ± 0.6 for the site-specific and random biotinylation strategies, respectively. Western blot analysis confirms that mTG-mediated biotinylation is restricted to the heavy chain, while lysine-targeted biotinylation is observed on both the heavy and light chains. The site-specific and randomly biotinylated antibodies were immobilized onto streptavidin-coated polystyrene 96-well plates to evaluate antigen (HRP) binding activity. The site-specific biotinylated antibody provided a 3-fold improvement in antigen binding capacity, sensitivity, and detection limit, that is attributed to the proper orientation of the antibody when immobilized through the Fc region. This chemo–enzymatic strategy is universally applicable to other antibodies for oriented antibody immobilization via site-specific linking chemistries without the need for protein engineering
Investigating Sk-3 based Spore killing in Neurospora crassa through Deletion Analysis of DNA Intervals i383 and i394
Neurospora fungi are found around the world. The species N. crassa is a popular model for use in genetics research. N. crassa produces sexual spores, called ascospores, during mating between strains of opposite mating types. N. crassa also produces spore sacs called asci, and each ascus typically contains eight viable ascospores. However, some Neurospora fungi carry selfish genetic elements called Spore killers, and when a strain carrying a Spore killer mates with a spore killing-susceptible strain, asci contain four black viable ascospores and four white inviable ascospores. In this project, I investigated a Spore killer called Sk-3. To act as a selfish genetic element, Sk-3 is thought to require at least two genes, a poison gene and an antidote gene. The Sk-3 antidote gene (rsk) has been identified, but the poison gene has not. The purpose of this study is to help identify the location of the poison gene. To do this, I deleted two DNA intervals (i383 and i394) from a location of the Neurospora genome that may harbor the poison gene. My results indicate that deletion of i383 eliminates spore killing while deletion of i394 has no effect on spore killing. The possibility that i394 overlaps with the poison gene is discussed
Web Application for Simulation of an Agent-Based Model in NetLogo3D
Agent-based models (ABMs) are computer simulation models for studying systems of autonomous agents. Modelers often use specialized software like NetLogo to develop ABMs, but this software poses barriers to researchers in other disciplines with no prior programming experience. To address this issue, we developed a web application that allows users to simulate our ABM via a web browser, eliminating the need for the user to download and use specialized software. While presented in the context of a specific ABM, our approach can be applied to other ABMs to enhance accessibility. The ABM presented here was developed in NetLogo3D. The model simulates pain-related neural activity in the central nucleus of the amygdala and generates an emergent measure of pain output. The web application enables users to modify parameters, run simulations, visualize output, and export data without interacting with the model’s code or downloading software, broadening access to researchers and the public
Addressing the isms in Deaf Education: What are the Views of Teacher Candidates?
Teacher preparations programs are obligated to prepare teachers who understand biases and work toward fostering inclusivity for their students. This presentation will report on the teacher candidates’ knowledge around ableism and other impediments to inclusivity and suggest next steps for ensuring a more democratic approach to education for all.

Colors of Nature
My research dives into all the colors and hues that make up the natural world. This research project was inspired by artist David Hockney\u27s work, and my personal interest in color theory. I researched many images of valleys, mountains, flower types, cloud types, and different terrains. I wanted to train my eye to see the undertones rather than the straight up colors in an image. Then I found photo references of landscape on royalty-free sites. I took certain parts from each image and collaged them together to create a brand-new imagined landscape. Hephaestus Bound
The Edwards Lab, where I conduct research, uses fruit flies (Drosophila) to model human cancer processes. Cancer cells form a structure called the perinucleolar complex which, as the name indicates, lies in close proximity to the nucleolus. The role of the perinucleolar complex, however remains mysterious. The complex forms around one major protein which corrals different RNA molecules. We discovered that the Drosophila version of this protein, Hephaestus, also makes a perinucleolar complex but in otherwise normal cells. This version allows the complex to be studied in non-pathological tissue. Here a cell sheet is shown at high resolution with four components labeled: the blue shows DNA; green, Hephaestus; red, the nucleolus (ribosome factory); purple, nuclear envelope. We find the Hephaestus-labeled perinucleolar complex is tightly bound to the nucleolus with no detectable overlap or separation indicating a physical linkage between them. This work allows us to further investigate the perinucleolar complex assembly and function using genetic methods. United in Pride
My research documents the culture at emo music concerts. The emo genre is a cousin to goth and punk, and lyrics often tell emotional stories about heartbreak, acceptance, and death. One of my research goals is to document the importance of emo music to LGBTQ fans, who often encounter those themes in their own lives. The concert pictured here took place during a period when several U.S. states were voting on anti-queer bills. While waiting for the show to begin, I noted that fans around me were wearing pride pins on their hats, jackets, and bags. Near the end of the set, the singer announced that homophobia has no place at their shows. The guitarist held up his guitar in support, silhouetted against the fog that had started to fill the stage.
