    Illinois State University is set to welcome its first cohort of students in the new College of Engineering in fall 2025. As the college prepares to educate the next generation of engineers, Dr. Nesrin Ozalp, the founding chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, shares her excitement for this significant addition to Illinois State\u27s academic offerings. Ozalp joins Redbird Buzz to look ahead at what students can expect from the College of Engineering and how her own career successes can open up opportunities for future Redbirds. Ozalp brings a research background in clean energy to her role as department chair. She plans to involve engineering students in her research on campus and provide them with hands-on mechanical engineering experience. She looks forward to working with undergraduates to make scientific advancements in clean energy, space exploration, robotics, artificial intelligence, and more.     Motivation Generation: An AI\u27s Strength and Student Engagement in the Alternative-Setting Science Classroom

    Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that continues to become increasingly more prevalent, for better or worse, in the classroom. One such way that it has seen use in the classroom is in the generation of lesson plans by teachers who use AI-driven large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. To see if these LLMs are, or could be, a reliable way to craft lessons as the technology continues to improve, the purpose of this study is to determine if a correlation exists between the strength of these different LLMs (measured in “parameters”) and the levels of student engagement reported by students who engage in the lessons generated by these LLMs. The participants involved in this study were ten students across two classrooms in an alternative-setting high school located in a suburban town in Illinois. This data was then collected by having four different AI-driven LLMs with different numbers of parameters generate two lessons each, and by having the student participants fill out a seven-item engagement survey after each lesson, giving them a total average engagement score to report. A correlational analysis between the number of parameters of the LLMs and the engagement scores reported for the respective lessons was then run through SPSS to determine if a correlation existed between these two data sets

    PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS\u27 VIEWS ON ROBOTICS SUPPORTED STEM APPLICATIONS IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

    In this study, it was aimed to develop out-of-school activity modules for 4th grade primary school students by combining R-STEM approach. It was aimed to investigate the opinions of teachers who implemented modules. In the study, case study from qualitative design was used. Research group, which was designed according to a holistic single case design, consisted of 15 primary school teachers working in different countries. The selection of research group was made using appropriate sampling. Within the scope of the study, five courses were held. Data were collected through individual and focus group interview form. Data were processed through content analysis. As a result of research, it was observed that teachers\u27 opinions about the practices were positive. Teachers shared the following opinions about their own experiences; activities were planned taking into account students\u27 grade level and curriculum skills related to STEM fields. Activities were structured with specific design tasks and well-planned teaching process. Teachers said that during the process, students worked like engineers, planned design process, used device to operate own designs, learned the coding. Teachers shared more superficial information at first interview. They shared more technical information about their own implementation process at the end of the each interview

    Critical Picture Book Literacy

    This study sought to revisit established definitions of critical visual literacy and determine how this concept could be re-envisioned specifically for picture books when informed by the approaches of teacher education students who had received limited prior formal instruction on critiquing visual texts. Seventeen sophomore elementary education students engaged in written self-discourse around the visual narrative of Milo Imagines the World written by Matt de la Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson where they generated questions and answers critically engaging with the visuals. These participants’ responses underwent thematic analysis informed by grounded theory which uncovered a collective definition for critical picture book literacy (CPBL), a reframing of critical visual literacy specifically derived from and for picture books. This definition centred illustrator agency, representation of identities and lived experiences, and unconscious bias of creators and readers

    Exploration of Differential Equation Models for Phage-Bacteria Population Dynamics

    Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and replicate within bacteria. Lytic phages cause the bacterial cell to burst, killing the bacteria. These types of phages can be used to treat patients with antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. As a step in developing successful treatment protocols, we aim to understand the population dynamics of phages and bacteria using an in vitro model. We model the dynamics using the Campbell model, which consist of a delay differential equation (DDE), as a base model. We extended the model by including the emergence of phage resistance. We then compared the DDE model with a parallel ordinary differential equation (ODE) model. We applied several parameter estimation methods to the ODE model, such as local sensitivity analysis, sensitivity-based identifiability, and a local optimization method to fit experimental data. We compared the ODE model to the DDE model and found that the ODE model better captures the data, allowing us to move forward with the ODE formulation
