    Issues of Power and Representation in/of the Local Context: The role of self-reflexivity and positionality in design research

    This article links design research in local contexts to the methodological issues of positionality and self-reflexivity. A critical examination of design's relationship with the local context indicates a need for self-reflexive methodologies as means of addressing power imbalances in the field, deciphering prejudices, and maintaining receptivity to diverse ways of knowing and approaches to knowledge. Drawing upon the first author's experience of fieldwork in a Turkish village, this article delves into the fluidity of positioning in the field. It self-reflexively examines the impact of the positionality of identities claimed and assigned during the research process, the relations and interactions that occurred in the field and the construction of the research text. While promoting self-reflexivity as a tool for critically engaged research, the article also addresses how design researchers in the local context might associate these methodological insights to their own studies

    Monetized (socio-)environmental handprint and footprint of an offshore windfarm in the Belgian Continental Shelf: An assessment of local, regional and global impacts

    Renewable offshore wind electricity is as one of the major renewable energy sources on our path towards carbon neutrality. As for all energy technologies, offshore wind farms (OWFs) will have both local and global negative and positive impacts. Understanding and quantifying these burdens and benefits requires a holistic sustainability assessment. This study tests and applies a novel (socio-) environmental impact assessment framework to quantify the monetized (socio-) environmental footprint and handprint of an offshore wind farm located in the Belgian Continental Shelf. This framework consists of a combination of two ways of integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Ecosystem Services Assessment (ESA) to quantify both the site-specific and site-generic impacts on ecosystem services (ESs) over the lifetime of a human intervention. For the operation and maintenance stage of the OWF, impacts on three local ESs were quantified, i.e. offshore wind energy provisioning, nursery and habitat maintenance and aesthetic value, while for the other life cycle stages site-generic impacts on multiple ESs were calculated. A comprehensive list of data was inventoried to conduct both the LCA and ESA studies. The monetized impact results were then aggregated and monetized at the level of three areas of protection, i.e. human health and well-being, natural resources and ecosystem quality. The results show that the OWF has a net handprint of +euro85,196, mainly due to electricity production, while the absolute footprint (-euro4039) consists largely of impacts associated to the supply chain of materials to manufacture the offshore windfarm. Furthermore, this study compares the (socio-) environmental performance of an OWF with nuclear energy, which is used as benchmark because of its high importance for electricity supply in Belgium.     Robust Controller Design for Time Delay Systems with Varying Parameters

The motivation for this work is the need for a control strategy that can handle both external disturbances, uncertainties and time-varying delays in linear parameter varying (LPV) systems which have wide applications in various fields. A novel synthesis method is proposed based on a quadratic Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional which is used to derive a sufficient matrix inequality condition via a Jensen-type integral inequality. We introduce an iterative algorithm to efficiently search for a feasible solution set for the synthesis problem. In addition to the proposed synthesis method, a comprehensive review of existing literature on robust control for LPV systems with time-varying delays is also provided. Various techniques are compared and contrasted and their advantages and limitations are highlighted. Therefore, the readers are equipped with a balanced view of the state-of-the-art in this field such that our proposed method is put into context. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a numerical example is presented, along with comparison analysis. The results show that our method outperforms existing methods in terms of both stability and performance. Overall, this work offers a valuable contribution to the field of control engineering with potential applications in a variety of industries. © 2023 IEEE

    EULER–ZAGIER SUMS VIA TRIGONOMETRIC SERIES

    In this note, we study the evaluations of Euler sums via trigonometric series. It is a commonly believed conjecture that for an even weight greater than seven, Euler sums cannot be evaluated in terms of the special values of the Riemann zeta function. For an even weight, we reduce the evaluations of Euler sums into the evaluations of double series and integrals of products of Clausen functions.     A study of the adaptation processes of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their mothers to Covid-19 restrictions

    In this study, it was aimed to examine the adaptation processes of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their mothers to Covid-19 restrictions. The research was designed in qualitative research method and focus group interview technique was used. The mothers of individuals with intellectual disabilities constitute the participant group of the study. A semi-structured interview form consisting of eight questions prepared by the researchers was used as a data collection tool. Data were collected through two focus group interviews via Zoom link. The data obtained were analyzed by content analysis method. As a result of the research, four themes were reached: “Life Before the Pandemic”, “Encountering the Pandemic”, “Effects of the Pandemic”, and “Facilitation in the Adaptation Process to the Pandemic”. As a result, although Covid-19 restrictions led to the regression of some skills of individuals with intellectual disabilities, it created an opportunity for them to develop new interests. In addition, although there were supports that facilitated the pandemic process, it was determined that mothers needed even more psychological support during this period

    Design and synthesis of novel 1,2,3,4-tetrazines as new anti-leukemia cancer agents

    A series of novel 1,2,3,4-tetrazines were designed and synthesized. 1H-NMR spectroscopy, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and HRMS were used to determine the structures of this novel compounds. Computational approaches suggested that DHFR is a putative target for the newly synthesized 11 compounds. Extensive molecular dynamics simulations followed by molecular docking simulations were employed to evaluate DHFR as a potential target protein. The anticancer activities of the compounds were evaluated against five different types of leukemia cell lines (Jurkat, Nalm-6, Reh, K562, and Molt-4) and one non-leukemic cell line (Hek293T) by MTT test in vitro and imatinib was used as a control drug. Among these compounds, 3a exhibited the best activity against all the leukemic cell lines, except Reh cell line. For Nalm-6, K562, Jurkat, and Molt-4 cell lines, IC50 values were found to be 15.98, 19.12, 23.15, and 25.80 & mu;M, respectively. Our work focuses on the synthesis of original and novel 1,2,3,4-tetrazine derivatives while contributing to the ongoing effort to discover more potent new antileukemia agents. Eleven novel 1,2,3,4-tetrazine derivatives were synthesized via [3 + 3] cycloaddition reaction between in situ formed aza-oxyallyl cations and azides and their anticancer activities were evaluated against five different leukemia cell lines and one non-leukemic cell line. Compound 3a showed the best activity in all cell lines except the Reh cell line. Docking studies showed that DHFR could be a potential target protein for these new compounds and the binding structures of some compounds were investigated.imag
