Local Case to Global Phenomenon: The Vanishing of Elisa Lam in the Digital Streaming Era
The viral video is an extremely well-known concept in the present era, especially fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic. A great example of this phenomenon is the video of Elisa Lam, a Canadian student, who vanished mysteriously at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles during her vacation to California in the United States of America on January 31, 2013. The video of Elisa Lam became viral after the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released the only video surveillance of her in the elevator of the Cecil Hotel on February 15, 2013, via its website. The reason for releasing the video by the LAPD was that they had difficulty finding Lam, and there was not enough evidence thus; they hoped that the public would help solve the case. After its release, the eerie video became viral as digital content creators and conspiracy theorists started sharing the video on multiple social media platforms. The primary platform, which supported and accelerated the viral spreading of the video, was YouTube. One of the first YouTubers who encountered the video on the LAPD website while looking for popular content that would grab people’s attention was John Lordan, the owner of the YouTube account LordanARTs. Lordan, among other YouTubers, started sharing the Lam video and began a discussion dissecting the many unusual aspects of the video, including Lam’s behavior, gestures, and environment. Following this, what started as a local missing person investigation became a global phenomenon. The viral video prompted the production of the Netflix documentary called Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021), exploring the Elisa Lam case, the notorious Cecil Hotel, and its violent unnerving history. As Netflix became one of the most popular subscription videoon-demand services (SVODs) in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, the release of the documentary re-fired the popularity of this case and the Elisa Lam video even after eight years. This ongoing popularity is showcased by the view count of the Elisa Lam video uploaded by the YouTuber Dennis Romero, which has over 30 million views at the moment since its first release date of February 13, 2013. The purpose of this chapter is to examine how local news can become viral, therefore; global, especially fueled by the increase of digital content and while being spread by various platforms. This study investigates the concepts of media convergence, participatory culture, collective intelligence, and how various accounts on various digital platforms approached this case, making the video a global phenomenon. In addition, the public’s behavior on social media, shaped and influenced by each other, and how this behavior may transform into cyberbullying while impacting innocent bystanders’ lives are analyzed. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Berlin 2022. A novel circular intuitionistic fuzzy AHP&VIKOR methodology: An application to a multi-expert supplier evaluation problem
VIKOR method being one of the frequently used Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods, is based on the distances of alternatives to positive and negative ideal solutions, and presents compromising solutions. AHP is another MCDM method dividing the big problem into small and manageable problems through pairwise comparisons of criteria and alternatives. In these methods, linguistic assessments are generally preferred since exact numerical assignments of criteria values are really difficult and experts can not reflect the thoughts in their minds with crisp numbers. The fuzzy set theory captures the vagueness and impreciseness in these linguistic assessments successfully thorough fuzzy numbers. Circular intuitionistic fuzzy sets (C-IFS) are the latest extension of ordinary fuzzy sets, which was introduced by Atanassov [1]. C-IFS help experts to define membership (belongingness) and nonmembership (unbelongingness) degrees by incorporating the uncertainty of these degrees. In this paper, an integrated C-IF AHP & CIF VIKOR methodology is developed and applied to a multi-expert supplier evaluation problem. The results obtained from the proposed methodology are compared with other methods, and a sensitivity analysis is performed as well
SEEKING ASYLUM IN THE MIDDLE EAST: Lessons from the Syrian crisis
This chapter delves into the similarities and differences of political and societal discourses of reception, protection, and integration of Syrian refugees in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. The chapter aims to give a main understanding and perspective to the reader and point to further readings. The chapter will demonstrate that a religio-political discourse of reception based on guesthood and the Ansar spirit revitalising the practice of migration of Prophet Mohammad and his followers from Mekka to Medina was implemented in these countries during the first years of the Syrian mass migration. However, this discourse is no longer embraced by the majority of receiving societies in these countries. The chapter claims that the preliminary discourse of guesthood that is likely to place emphasis on temporariness has recently posed impediments before the integration and social cohesion of Syrian refugees. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Anna Triandafyllidou; individual chapters, the contributors
Adults’ food label reading habits and the effects of these habits on food choice and diet quality
The expiration date (%96,0) and brand (%84,6) have been the label information that has been given the most attention. It was found that the average age of those who paid attention to the brand and nutritional values on the food label was smaller, and the average age of those who paid attention to the compliance with the TSE/Turkish Food Codex was larger (p<0,05). The four most important factors affecting the participants' food choice are natural content, price, sensory attractiveness and health, respectively. The vast majority of participants (%90,9) want authorized institutions to inform about food labels. The average score of Healthy Eating Index (HEI) was found to be 53,5±13,63 for women and 45,82±13,96 for men
Study of dijet events with large rapidity separation in proton-proton collisions at ?s = 2.76 TeV
Abstract: The cross sections for inclusive and Mueller-Navelet dijet production are measured as a function of the rapidity separation between the jets in proton-proton collisions at s = 2.76 TeV for jets with transverse momentum pT> 35 GeV and rapidity |y| 20 GeV is introduced to improve the sensitivity to the effects of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) evolution. The measurement is compared with the predictions of various Monte Carlo models based on leading-order and next-to-leading-order calculations including the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi leading-logarithm (LL) parton shower as well as the LL BFKL resummation. Measurements of Higgs boson production cross-sections in the H ? ? + ? ? decay channel in pp collisions at ?s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Abstract: Measurements of the production cross-sections of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson (H) decaying into a pair of ?-leptons are presented. The measurements use data collected with the ATLAS detector from pp collisions produced at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb?1. Leptonic (? ? ?????) and hadronic (? ? hadrons ??) decays of the ?-lepton are considered. All measurements account for the branching ratio of H ? ?? and are performed with a requirement |yH| < 2.5, where yH is the true Higgs boson rapidity. The cross-section of the pp ? H ? ?? process is measured to be 2.94 ±0.21(stat)?0.32+0.37(syst) pb, in agreement with the SM prediction of 3.17 ± 0.09 pb. Inclusive cross-sections are determined separately for the four dominant production modes: 2.65 ±0.41(stat)?0.67+0.91(syst) pb for gluon-gluon fusion, 0.197 ±0.028(stat)?0.026+0.032(syst) pb for vector-boson fusion, 0.115 ±0.058(stat)?0.040+0.042(syst) pb for vector-boson associated production, and 0.033 ±0.031(stat)?0.017+0.022(syst) pb for top-quark pair associated production. Measurements in exclusive regions of the phase space, using the simplified template cross-section framework, are also performed. All results are in agreement with the SM predictions. The final part of the study addresses provisions regarding the protection of employees in connection with the division referred to in the Turkish Commercial Code, Act No. 6102 in detail through comparison with the Labour Act No. 4857 and relevant provisions of the other Laws, and suggestions for amendments are presented, evaluating deficiencies included in provisions regarding the protection of employees in this context
TRADE RECEIVABLES COLLECTION PERIOD AND FIRM VALUE: EVIDENCE FROM LISTED TURKISH INDUSTRIALS
This paper shows that average collection period of trade receivables (ACP) and a deterioration in the credit quality of trade receivables both have negative effect on firm value. Evidence is based on Turkish industrial firms listed on Borsa Istanbul over 2005-2017 period. The effect exists only for firms whose average collection period increased by more than thirty days within the last one to three years. Similarly, the value consequence of ACP holds for high-profit firms, but not for low-profit firms. This study utilizes system generalized method of moments in all estimations and treats trade receivable policy variables as endogenous due to omitted variable bias concerns. Overall, findings suggest a destructive effect of lengthened deferred payment terms on firm value specifically for high-profit firms and for firms with a historical upward trend in ACP
Search for resonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the b b ¯ b b ¯ final state using pp collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Abstract: A search for resonant Higgs boson pair production in the bb¯bb¯ final state is presented. The analysis uses 126 fb-1-139 fb-1 of pp collision data at s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is divided into two channels, targeting Higgs boson decays which are reconstructed as pairs of small-radius jets or as individual large-radius jets. Spin-0 and spin-2 benchmark signal models are considered, both of which correspond to resonant HH production via gluon-gluon fusion. The data are consistent with Standard Model predictions. Upper limits are set on the production cross section times branching ratio to Higgs boson pairs of a new resonance in the mass range from 251 GeV to 5 TeV. © 2022 CERN
A new calibration method for charm jet identification validated with proton-proton collision events at ?s = 13TeV
Abstract: Many measurements at the LHC require efficient identification of heavy-flavour jets, i.e. jets originating from bottom (b) or charm (c) quarks. An overview of the algorithms used to identify c jets is described and a novel method to calibrate them is presented. This new method adjusts the entire distributions of the outputs obtained when the algorithms are applied to jets of different flavours. It is based on an iterative approach exploiting three distinct control regions that are enriched with either b jets, c jets, or light-flavour and gluon jets. Results are presented in the form of correction factors evaluated using proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb?1 at ?s = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2017. The closure of the method is tested by applying the measured correction factors on simulated data sets and checking the agreement between the adjusted simulation and collision data. Furthermore, a validation is performed by testing the method on pseudodata, which emulate various mismodelling conditions. The calibrated results enable the use of the full distributions of heavy-flavour identification algorithm outputs, e.g. as inputs to machine-learning models. Thus, they are expected to increase the sensitivity of future physics analyses. © 2022 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboratio
