Foundationsâ Actions for the EU Mission Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities : Version 1.0
The EU Mission "Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities" under Horizon Europe aims to achieve climate neutrality in cities by 2030. 112 cities are participating, including 100 from EU member states and 12 from associated countries. These cities must sign the Climate City Contract (CCC), outlining their actions and investments. The CCC has three components: the Commitment, the Action Plan, and the Investment Plan. The EU Commission reviews each CCC and may award the EU Mission Label, unlocking further funding opportunities. Currently, 53 cities have earned the EU Mission Label. The analysis of 52 CCCs reveals that 58 foundations are involved across 22 cities in 11 EU member states (source: https://netzerocities.app/knowledge-ccc). This booklet highlights the foundations' actions and additional philanthropic actors advancing urban climate neutrality.A first section explores the wide range of actions and commitment of the foundations involved in the CCCs, while the second broadens the investigative scope to identify and analyze additional philanthropic actors whose initiatives, though not formally acknowledged in the contracts, significantly advance urban climate neutrality objectives

Granting Movement: The Impact of Cultural Philanthropy on African American Concert Dance in the 1960s and 1970s
This research report addresses the influence of cultural philanthropy on African American concert dance during the 1960s and 1970s. This period, known as the postwar "dance boom," saw significant philanthropic support for the performing arts from institutions such as the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Although Black dancemakers received less funding than white-led ballet companies, they nonetheless used their grants to innovate aesthetically and broaden the sociopolitical role of dance in American life through publications, community-based performances, and educational workshops. Using examples from the grant application files of Carole Johnson (founder of the Modern Organization for Dance Evolvement) and Alvin Ailey (director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), this report reveals how Black dancemakers leveraged modest grants to propel their artistic and civic missions, blending dance forms and fostering community engagement with their art. In so doing, the report also underscores the archival significance of grant application files, which contain key insight into artists' creative ideas and intentions. Ultimately, the report concludes that it is essential to assess "offstage" dynamics of funding and production in order to appreciate dance's cultural significance and real-world impact

Building foundations for collaborative transformation: a philanthropy sector needs analysis
The world faces multiple interconnected crises: an urgent need for equitable green, digital and social transitions; rising radicalisation and conflict; growing threats to democratic freedoms; and shrinking civic space – all while experiencing unprecedented cuts to international development aid. The current system clearly lacks resilience and capacity to address these challenges. Yet within these crises lies an opportunity to fundamentally reimagine our approach to development.Tackling today's societal challenges requires raising our level of ambition to deliver far more transformational impact: tackling root causes, innovating new models and shifting systems to leave behind a long-term sustainable legacy that delivers for people and planet. This is only possible by aligning and combining the powerful levers from public, private, people and, more and more, investors. Philanthropy has a vital role to play in making such collaborations happen, offering far more than funding. With its unique flexibility, convening power, and appetite for risk, philanthropy can drive transformational change by enabling bold, cross-sector collaboration. It must now move beyond traditional grant-making to unlock the collective resources of all sectors to address systemic issues at their root. However, despite a growing recognition of the power of partnerships, turning intention into action remains difficult. The Partnering Initiative, WINGS and Philea have come together to conduct a needs assessment to understand how the foundation sector itself must change in order to make the necessary shift. This needs assessment, developed through extensive research with over 50 foundations, provides valuable insights into current partnering practices, challenges faced, and future aspirations. By identifying key barriers and sharing good practices, it equips foundations with knowledge of the internal changes needed to maximise impact through partnerships
