    Particle formation and heat transfer in a gas-solid hydrolysis reactor with cupric chloride conversion to copper oxychloride

    This paper presents a new predictive heat and mass transfer model of the gas-solid reaction in a cupric chloride decomposition and hydrolysis reactor during thermochemical water splitting in a copper-chlorine (Cu-Cl) cycle. The hydrated cupric chloride droplets descend in a narrow vessel through a reactor which forms a more coherent flow than a traditional hydrolysis spray reactor. The reactor operates based on falling solid particles and the gas-solid flow behavior in the reactor is analyzed to predict the total relative velocity of steam in its interaction with the CuCl2 (s). Aspen plus software and past literature are used for the thermodynamic and kinetic parameter evaluation. The present model reveals new physical insights into the gas/solid hydrodynamics in the hot zone of the hydrolysis reactor. From the analysis and results, the total relative velocity of steam through the height of the furnace varies from 0.32 m/s at the bottom to 0.12 m/s at the top. Furthermore, at the steam/CuCl2 molar ratio of 15 for an increase of cupric chloride volumetric flow rate from 8 ml/min into 25 ml/min, the average net heat transfer rate increases from 1.85 kW into 5.45 kW.Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC

    Inquiry-based learning in higher education: A pedagogy of trust

    This qualitative constructivist grounded theory study of trust within inquiry-based learning in higher education (IBL-HE) environments examined the experiences of instructors and students through four focus groups and nine individual interviews. As the study purpose is to understand the development and maintenance of trust in IBL-HE classrooms, participants are experienced instructors, learners, and authors of IBL-HE from Canada, USA, New Zealand, and Ireland. We used face-to-face sessions and zoom sessions to facilitate the focus group experience, and telephone for the individual interviews to explore the following two research questions: (1) what does trust mean in a higher education IBL (IBL-HE) classroom; and, (2) how do those involved create and maintain it? Our findings are revealed through our Pedagogy of Trust in IBL-HE using 3 themes: (1) Creating an environment of negotiated mutuality; (2) Emerging relationship/community building; and, (3) Internalizing and applying a mindset shift. Each of these stages involved a different trust relationship: (1) Professor-Student; (2) Student-Student; and, (3) Student-Self. These findings provide evidence for IBL as a pedagogy of trust in higher education, and reinforce the need for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), and the lifelong learning skills desired by contemporary employers

    Perspectives of western Canadian dairy farmers on the future of farming

    Similar to the situation in many countries, the dairy industry in Canada is challenged by the need to adapt to changing societal demands. An industry-led initia-tive (Dairy Farmers of Canada’s proAction Initative, known as proAction) was developed to respond to this challenge, providing mandatory national standards for on-farm practices. Farmers are more likely to follow such standards if they are aligned with their values and beliefs. The aim of this study was to better un-derstand farmers’ perspectives on the future of the Canadian dairy industry, with a focus on the role of mandatory policies such as those related to proAction. Seven focus groups were conducted, with discussions based on the principles of appreciative inquiry. Par-ticipants were each asked to write down key words that represent the “must-haves” on dairy farms in 20 yr from now. Although participants were encouraged to focus on aspects directly related to animal care, all answers were accepted. Key words were then used to facilitate a discussion and elicit ideas on how to achieve these must-haves. Particular focus was on the direction that participants believed policy should take to meet these goals. Explorative qualitative analysis was used for the written key words, and transcripts of the audio-recorded focus group discussions were analyzed using thematic analysis. Examples of farm-specific consider-ations that were raised as future must-haves of animal care on dairy farms included cow comfort, employee management, responsible health management, and use of advanced thechnologies. Participants agreed that objectives can only be achieved through collaboration among farmers and between farmers and researchers, and they regarded citizen education as a promising ap-proach to align differing expectations of the public and farmers. Citizen trust in the dairy industry was consid-ered a must-have, and participants believed that one of the benefits of mandatory policies for animal care is their potential to increase trust. These results may help guide the development of new animal care policies and increase understanding of the perceived legitimacy of new policies by dairy farmers

    Different worlds same province: Blended learning design to promote transcultural understanding in teacher education

    The history of Canada’s educational offerings for Indigenous students was based in colonial and assimilative practice. As such culturally responsive pre-service teacher education needs to respond not only by moving away from historical practice but with a moral and social imperative through programming that aids reconciliation. Current literature outlines the challenges that both Indigenous and mainstream teacher candidates have in developing efficacy towards transcultural skills development. In an effort to respond to both types of students, during the design and development of a 16-month community-based Bachelor of Education program, that was offered in parallel to a campus based program, a model of blended-education for cultural understanding was developed. Using the “elementary science methods” course as design case, this paper will outline the development of the blended model which paired campus- and community-based students. The challenges and successes of the design were determined through a thematic analysis of instructor observations of the pilot during the 2014-15 academic year. Four key themes emerged as important in fostering transcultural understandings within blended learning practice: student efficacy, relationship building, recognition of cultural bias, and legitimizing traditional ecological knowledge. Each of these will be discussed in the context of the course as well as transformative post-secondary educational experiences

    This paper is motivated by major food product recall events in recent years, especially how the timely and effective response using post-recall management can make a difference. We consider the rare but very influential major product recalls as disruptions to the supply chain and incorporate locating reprocessing centers for the returned products to mitigate expected operational costs. We adopt the closed loop network design framework and assume the location decisions for reprocessing center take place after the product recall events. Our scenario-based analysis shows the approach is effective in both absolute and relative measures
