Police and partner preparedness for climate change in England and Wales
The UK government has been criticised for being ‘off track’ to meet its own climate change related aims and targets, as domestic policy continues to invest in and subsidise fossil fuel extraction and combustion related industries, mitigation interventions are weakened, and market-reliant policy setting, implementation and regulation fails to meaningfully address the problem (Climate Change Committee, 2023; Kuzemko, 2022; Somerville, 2021). Meanwhile, the adverse cascading ‘consequences of consequences’ of climate change – public health crises; fuel and energy deficits; food insecurity; national security conflicts; organised crime; vulnerable populations; forced migration with climate ‘refugees’ fleeing environmental and societal decay in search of safety and stability, and key infrastructure degradation – are starting to be felt not just globally but in the local communities in England and Wales. Their criminogenic potential and the threat posed to human security are acknowledged at strategic level in reviews of future operating environment and structural trends shaping public safety in the next few decades (College of Policing, 2020, Police Foundation, 2020, 2022). If and how this strategic awareness translates into operational planning and preparedness among the police and its key partners, however, is much less well understood; something the current paper aims to address. It reports on a small-scale scoping study of 13 participants involved in strategic, tactical, and operational levels of risk assessment, planning, management, response and service delivery within police and key partner agencies. Thematic analysis of interview data revealed four key themes: awareness of climate change impacts; why the police should care; prioritisation and preparation, and various enabling and impeding factors. The results suggest that preparedness for climate change impacts is hampered by a narrow focus on legislated requirements, short-term planning, lack of funding and resources, and limited prescience. Recommendations centre on redefining planning parameters, strengthening central government engagement, amplifying awareness and understanding of trend analyses, prioritisation of ‘futures’ thinking, ethical considerations, and collaborative preparedness
Expecting to sit: a two-phase explanatory sequential mixed methods exploration of the social and cultural influences on occupational sitting amongst office-based employees
Prolonged sitting has increasingly been recognised as a significant health risk, making the reduction of workplace sitting a growing public health priority. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences and perceived influences that contribute to increased sitting, as a form of sedentary behaviour, during the working day among desk-based employees. In particular the aims were: to explore and identify the amount of time during the working day that employees spend sitting; to examine employee perceptions of how social, cultural and organisational factors influence their time spent sitting during working hours and how this is both reinforced and maintained by these factors; to understand what employees perceive as the barriers and facilitators to movement during the working day; and to explore employee perceptions of how they can influence and control the amount of time spent sitting during working hours
A realist evaluation of the learning and practice development strategies in a Clinical Leadership Programme (CLP) to identify what works, in what context, and for whom, to impact on effective workplace cultures and person-centred clinical leadership practice
Clinical leadership is pivotal for high quality care and transformation. Despite investment there is little robust evidence of the impact clinical leadership programmes (CLP) have on workplace culture. This thesis identifies the CLP processes that are most useful for understanding the relationships between micro (team) and meso (organisation) system levels, and how specific experiential learning and practice development (PD) strategies impact on micro and meso system culture and clinical leadership practice.
A realist methodology, undertaken between 2016-2020, comprised three foci: a concept analysis of clinical leadership; a realist synthesis of CLP; and a realist evaluation of work-based CLP, underpinned by PD, from an acute NHS hospital case study. Realist focus groups (n=3), realist interviews (n=3), and documentary analysis (n=2), across healthcare professions, roles, and genders, informed initial programme theories about what works in a CLP. Testing with the first integrated multiprofessional CLP participants (n=6); portfolios (n=2); stakeholder (n=5) and external CLP expert (n=4) interviews; and a Patient and Public Involvement representative, refined four resulting programme theories about what works, but also revealed what does not work, and the ‘dark side’ of clinical leadership development.
Four programme theories, illustrated metaphorically using two fairy tales ‘The Frog Prince’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’, informed a synthesised conceptual framework and impact continuum with enabling/disabling mechanisms impacting on CLP outcomes. Three paradoxes influence outcomes positively or negatively. Individual and team enablers/disablers, together with learning and PD strategies, can explain different outcomes on microsystem level culture. Two key factors, alignment, and psychological safety, are particularly influential on whether CLP impact on the development of flourishing or fractured workplaces and organisations. The insights presented in the Conceptual Framework and Impact Continuum for CLP can inform clinical leadership development for integrated health and social care, but will require further research to understand impact across the macrosystem

For the residency, I was inspired by natural structures and forms, particularly those found in the book 'Li; Dynamic Forms In Nature' by David Wade. These patterns include 'fracture', 'crackle' and 'branching', in addition to orb like forms.

Electrocardiographic characteristics of bladder cancer patients receiving preoperative chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy.
Objective
Patients treated with preoperative chemotherapy and immunotherapy for bladder cancer may be at increased risk of cardiotoxicity and electrophysiological abnormalities. This study aimed to analyze their electrocardiographic (ECG) alterations.
Methods
Patients with bladder cancer who were hospitalized and receiving tislelizumab plus nab-paclitaxel (TnP) were enrolled prospectively. ECG, cardiac biomarkers, and echocardiography were performed at baseline and the end of TnP.
Results
A total of 60 patients (76.7% males), including 30 muscle-invasive and 30 non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, received three or four cycles of TnP, respectively. Hypertension was the commonest comorbidity (41.7%), and 25 patients (41.7%) were prescribed cardiovascular drugs. In comparison with baseline characteristics, cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) were within normal ranges after TnP. However, echocardiographic parameter of left ventricular ejection fraction slightly decreased after TnP (62.81 ± 3.81% to 61.10 ± 4.37%, p = .011). The incidence of abnormal ECG increased from 65.0% at baseline to 76.7%, of which only a higher prevalence of fragmented QRS (fQRS) was observed (33.3% to 50.0%, p = .013; mainly in inferior leads). ECG parameters of QT dispersion (QTd) were prolonged significantly after the regimen (39.50 ± 11.37 to 44.20 ± 15.85 ms, p = .019).
Conclusion
In bladder cancer patients receiving preoperative chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy, the main ECG abnormality was fQRS and QTd, with relatively normal cardiac biomarkers and echocardiographic parameters. Regular ECG screening should be carried out carefully to detect potential cardiotoxicity in the long-term follow-up

Contemporary society resides within an epoch of silicone-based science and technology. The advancements in silicone-based science and technology have exhibited unparalleled dynamism and marvels, portraying a reflection of humanity, an extension of human capabilities, and even an integral component of human existence.
This profound influence extends across various domains such as philosophy, art, culture, and daily life in our era. The integration of digitization and technology into the realm of painting has bestowed upon it an infinite realm of meaning. The dynamics of the relationship between painters, their tools, and the resultant artworks have undergone significant transformations, thereby altering artistic concepts and methodologies. The incorporation of silicon technology in painting creation has emerged as a distinctive hallmark of contemporary artistic evolution.
This study adopts a media evolution perspective, focusing on "silicon-based painting" as its core subject of inquiry. By leveraging media technology as a lens for understanding the evolution of painting forms, this paper traces the historical trajectory of painting phenomena intertwined with silicon-based technology. It delves into the interaction between media technology and traditional painting concepts within this evolutionary path, categorizing and evaluating existing silicon-based painting creation methods and technologies. Drawing insights from personal practice, this study explores the epochal significance and diverse possibilities inherent in silicon-based painting creation. The research methodology employed follows a linear historical logic while horizontally expanding into the classification of media and technology. It synthesizes and articulates the transformative impact on concepts, visual language, and creative forms in the evolution of silicon-based painting towards the future, forecasting the potential forms of silicon-based painting and actively engaging with the future development of media.
This research methodology integrates practical application with theoretical analysis. Initially, it elucidates the core concept and research boundaries of silicon-based painting through a comparative analysis with emerging art forms like digital painting, virtual art, and AI painting. This analysis elucidates the historical trajectory of technology and art, paving the way for a nuanced understanding of painting's evolution within the silicon-based technology milieu.
Technical analyses and functional simulations of specific art cases are conducted, enabling the refinement and expansion of silicon-based painting possibilities. Noteworthy advancements include the Torchand1.0 machine with automatic hard pen drawing functionality, the Torchand2.0 machine with a rich line language material library and adaptive image analysis capabilities, and the Torchand3.0 machine with network connectivity, environmental sensing, and intelligent data processing abilities. Moreover, this study explores novel display methodologies aligning with the procedural, performative, and automated attributes of silicon-based painting, culminating in an exhibition and exchange event.
Ultimately, this comprehensive approach aims to distill empirical findings and theoretical insights, delineating the trajectory of painting in the silicon-based era and contemplating the potential of silicon-based technology within the future painting ecosystem and media integration in the post-human era, thus offering valuable insights for art practitioners and critics alike
Fretboard navigation strategies in jazz guitar improvisation: Theory and practice
This thesis explores how the standard guitar fretboard may be navigated during common-practice jazz improvisation through the analysis of expert practitioners and the construction of relevant theoretical models. Analysis of some representative players is used to develop some novel graphic representations of selected improvisations with a focus on how the fretboard is navigated and to show how an understanding of individual navigations can illuminate ‘fretboard personalities’ from which various navigational strategies can be discovered, extracted and applied for the learner, as well as for purely analytical purposes.
Composed of two main sections - theory and practice - the theory section includes contextual and analytical work, whilst the practice section applies some of the findings of the analysis as a mechanism which can be used for jazz guitar improvisation pedagogy
