Underserved groups access to reproductive services: A literature review of women aged 18–25 years
The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the need for several improvements for young women, in terms of accessing, funding, and strategies for the development of sexual and reproductive health care (SRH). Core recommendations were highlighted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Report (Johnson,2020) on sexual and reproductive Health in the UK. Key recommendations included that the choice of method and delivery of reproductive services for women is reducing. This was furthered globally by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (2023) who note a need for equity in access, supportive health monitoring and a focus on underserved groups.
This literature review was conducted using the established method of thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke,2006), and in parallel with the APPG report and WHO recommendations, consolidates the findings into three key themed areas: underserved women’s reproductive healthcare, cost effective contraception, young people’s access to and understanding of fertility and contraception services. Underserved communities such as young women from marginalised groups, people of colour (Messinis et al,2021), women who have sex with women (Burkill & Waterhouse2019) and women with disabilities (McCarthy,2011), experience inadequate and disparity of provision when accessing reproductive services. The review highlights limited high quality, recent, UK-based studies to further inform local governments, that considers the views and needs of young women 18–25 years when accessing reproductive services to implement change
Thematic analysis and artificial intelligence: A step-by-step process for using ChatGPT in thematic analysis
This study sets out how to use generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the six steps of systematic thematic analysis. It leverages AI to address the limitations of traditional thematic analysis. This paper developed prompts (inputs) for ChatGPT (a generative AI chatbot based on a large language model) that are based on many researchers’ discussions and criticisms of qualitative data analysis. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, it addresses a critical research gap by showcasing ChatGPT prompts for each step of the six steps of systematic thematic analysis, which also addresses researcher training in thematic analysis. Second, it contributes to the development of input to train AI in thematic analysis, including a description of how to familiarize an AI system with the context of a research study and the researcher’s methodological and theoretical considerations; this approach helps to reduce human bias and improves accountability and transparency in thematic analysis

This short film is both a personal visual archive and a methodological intervention within the field of digital humanities, using layered portraiture, digital collage, and time-based imagery to interrogate how Black British women document themselves in the face of historical erasure.
By placing myself as both subject and researcher, I explores themes of memory, visibility, and resistance. This piece is built using my original research frameworks — ADN™, MAETT™, and MMAT™—which puts neurodivergent creative processes and cultural self-archiving at the centre of this research.
It reflects a commitment to digital platforms as tools of self-preservation, offering a counter-narrative to dominant visual histories. The video stands as a creative artifact, asserting that in order to remain visible within history, we must actively archive ourselves.

Computational Insight into the Intercalating Properties of Cryptolepine
DNA is held together by hydrogen bonding between nucleobases (adenine-thymine, guanine-cytosine) and van der Waals interactions between adjacent base pairs’ π orbitals. Intercalating molecules with quasiplanar structures utilize van der Waals interactions to bind between DNA base pairs. Experimental studies have shown that Cryptolepine preferentially intercalates between nonalternating cytosine and guanine base pairs. However, an atomic-scale mechanism that can explain the selective intercalation is still missing. Using molecular dynamics and density functional theory, we demonstrate how Cryptolepine binds to DNA base pairs, rationalizing its selectivity by analyzing the intermolecular bonding strength predicted by Umbrella Sampling and Free Energy Perturbation calculations. Cryptolepine is stable in all DNA base conformations studied, and the binding is a combination of van der Waals interactions with the nucleobases surrounding its π system and hydrogen bonds with the DNA backbone and nucleobases. Our model predicts a preference for cytosine and guanine base pairs with a more prominent preference for alternating cytosine and guanine base pairs. These findings illustrate Cryptolepine’s binding mechanism to DNA and highlight the importance of hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions
Disrupted spatial but not temporal aspects of nociceptive processing determine painful polyneuropathies
Polyneuropathy remains a diagnostic and clinical challenge, with limited understanding of the mechanisms underlying painful and nonpainful phenotypes. While previous studies have examined various characteristics of these patients, the temporal and spatial dynamics of endogenous pain modulation remains not fully elucidated. In this study, offset analgesia (OA) and spatial summation of pain (SSp) were used as measures of pain modulation in individuals with distal symmetric polyneuropathy, stratified by the presence (n = 30) or absence of pain (n = 30), and compared with healthy controls (n = 30). All participants underwent quantitative sensory testing and assessments of OA and SSp using a thermal stimulator applied to the dorsum of the foot. Patients with painful polyneuropathy exhibited enhanced SSp compared with the pain-free polyneuropathy group and healthy controls (P < 0.05), and impaired OA compared with healthy controls (P < 0.05). The pain-free neuropathy group showed less efficient OA and a slightly enhanced SSp, but this finding did not reach significance. The data suggest that changes in spatial summation were primarily driven by heightened pain responses to nociceptive input from smaller areas, rather than larger ones. Notably, spatial summation and the effects of OA were found to be correlated, irrespective of pain diagnosis. These findings underscore specific impairments in endogenous pain modulation in individuals with painful neuropathy, thus advancing our understanding of its pathophysiological mechanisms. They further highlight the differential roles of spatial and temporal dynamics in pain modulation across various neuropathic populations, offering promising avenues for improved diagnostics and prognostics related to polyneuropathy-associated pain
The "Green Children of Woolpit": a weird allegory of isolation, otherness and belonging
The English folk legend of the Green Children of Woolpit has enduring appeal. First appearing as a wonder tale in the medieval chronicles of William of Newburgh and Ralph of Coggeshall, the children’s story has attracted numerous retellings across a range of creative forms. The sudden appearance of the green-skinned brother and sister, dressed in strange clothes and speaking an unintelligible language, has been the subject of multiple theories, from the scientific to the speculative, with the children recast as fey folk, aliens, lost immigrants and malnourished foundlings. Focusing on two recent short story re-visionings of the tale, this creative-critical essay examines the legend through a consideration of the original tale’s landscape in Suffolk, and explores representations of otherness, gender and the nonhuman found in these retellings
Facial fillers and surgical rhinoplasty: Cross-sectional study
This study aims to provide an overview of how rhinoplasty surgeons manage patients with previous nonsurgical rhinoplasty and facial fillers. A multicenter international cross-sectional study was conducted in accordance with strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. A survey was distributed to members of the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery and associated colleagues, with responses analyzed from surgeons performing over 10 rhinoplasties annually. A total of 171 surgeons from 45 countries participated, with 165 meeting the inclusion criteria. The respondents included ear, nose, and throat (41%), plastic (7%), maxillo-facial (10%), and facial plastic surgeons (23%), averaging 116 rhinoplasties annually and 13 years of experience. Among the surgeons, 74% perform rhinoplasty on patients with prior nasal fillers, typically waiting 21 weeks after filler rhinoplasty before surgery. Additionally, 44% of surgeons remove nasal fillers preoperatively, primarily using hyaluronidase. During surgery, 76% of surgeons remove nasal fillers, and 25% modify their surgical steps for patients with a history of fillers. This study shows that there is no clear consensus in the management of patients with nasal fillers. Surgeons are often unaware of the preoperative existence of nasal and facial fillers, their potential complications, and their management. To address this, guidelines should be established to facilitate the management of the growing number of patients with facial fillers

Drawing from personal experiences and philosophical reflections, the piece highlights the significance of stepping beyond traditional modes of thinking to access deeper layers of understanding.
Through the lens of poetic nursing and arts-based research, our article underscores the value of creative practices in fostering resilience, especially within educational and caregiving contexts.
It invites readers to consider the potential of creative knowing as a pathway to personal and collective healing.
As a cultural creative artist and educator, it is important to expand my audience and seek understanding in other fields of study and social environments.

Art is a great form of holistic self-therapy, especially for those that may have Mental health conditions like myself. Art is what saved me, freed me, and now is steering my academic career and social justice work.
As a Black British woman, counternarratives within all arenas are essential for equity, including in healthcare, and using digital platforms such as Canterbury Blogs as a tool for contribution.
Representation does matter.
