    Slicing form and chair ---- a case study Ninglu Zhang Spring 2019 Monica Correia School of Art an Art History I’ve always been interested in using slicing form to design furniture because it is simple and easy to assemble and disassemble the furniture. However, the furniture is also heavy. For my honors research project, I will be exploring how to use the slicing form technique and make design modifications that are necessitated when working with foam material. After creating a new chair design, I bought some rigid foam from Menards. The foam feels light while has a thickness of 2 inches. The disadvantage of using foam showed up when I did the joint cutting test. The foams split when I joined the two pieces together. I adjust the gap between two pieces to avoid the splits. I also changed my design from having only two points providing full support under the sitting area, because of the fragility of foam. To make it safer for people to sit on it, I enlarged the supporting area. The last issue I had was the surface of this chair. The foam is pink and has text and a brand name on it. I was conflicted as to whether I should cover it with flat fabric stapled on the chair or glue some woolen scrap on to the surface. The staple might cause the structure weaker because the feature of foam and the glue might cause the surface to get dirty and messy. Gluing the woolen scrap works much better after I did the test. The finished chair, turns out to be a super light, but not quite reliable. The sitting area is fine, but the hand and back rest areas are weak and fragile. I can make these two areas stronger by using more material on these two parts. Even though it will increase the size, it is still light and easy to move around. I enjoyed the process of exploring the slicing technique utilizing foam and found that creating structures with this material and technique is feasible. The density of the foam however, needs to be taken into account during the design process. I will apply the same techniques and similar material to make lightweight, easy assembling, and safe furniture in the future

    Physical Therapy Management of an Adolescent Dancer Diagnosed with an L5 Spondylolysis: A Case Report

    Background: Spondylolysis is a stress fracture occurring in the pars interarticularis of the vertebral arch. Due to the nature of their activities and immature skeletal system, adolescent athletes are highly susceptible. Nearly 50% of those experiencing low back pain in this cohort can be attributed to spondylolysis. Currently there is a large knowledge gap in the literature in effective physical therapy management of young athletes with a spondylolysis. Case Description: The patient was a 16-year-old female dancer diagnosed with an L5 spondylolysis. Interventions: Treatment of the patient consisted of a 3-phase progression. Phase 1 consisted of soft tissue mobilization and non-weightbearing core and hip extensor/abductor strengthening. Phase 2 added weight-bearing and plyometric activities. Phase 3 was a maintenance period while the patient returned to her sport. Outcome Measures: The 3 primary outcome measures assessed were: Modified Oswestry Low Back Pain survey, manual muscle testing, and percent of return to sport. Following 8 weeks of physical therapy, the patient demonstrated a 20% improvement in her Oswestry score, full strength and endurance of musculature tested, and returned to 100% of sport specific activities Discussion: The patient had made a complete return to dancing following 8 weeks of immobilization and 6 weeks of physical therapy, with an additional 2 weeks of continued physical therapy. This aligns with the time frame of return to sport average established in the literature of 3.7 months. This case demonstrated the safe use of a progressive, phased rehabilitation approach to return the patient back to dancing activities

    Utilization of AutoAmbulator as an Adjunct to Physical Therapy in an Individual with Parkinson’s Disease: A Case Report

    Background: Parkinson’s Disease is a neurogenerative disease of the basal ganglia resulting in decreased dopamine production. The imbalance of dopamine in individuals with Parkinson’s Disease presents with symptoms including bradykinesia, rigidity, resting tremor, and postural instability. The purpose of this case report is to describe the use of an AutoAmbulator, bodyweight supported treadmill, in conjunction with traditional therapy and detail a patient with Parkinson’s Disease response to therapy. Case Description: An 86-year-old male with Parkinson’s disease was admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation facility after being hospitalized with generalized weakness and altered mental status. Prior to being hospitalized, he ambulated with a rolling walker household distances independently; however, at evaluation he required a two person assist to ambulate 10 ft in the parallel bars. Intervention: Three bouts of bodyweight supported treadmill training occurred in conjunction with overground training, postural education, lower extremity strengthening, transfer training, and dynamic standing balance over twelve sessions of inpatient rehabilitation. Outcomes: Outcome measures utilized consisted of FIM scores, Timed Up and Go test, 10 Meter Walk Test, and total distance ambulated. Discussion: Positive outcomes were observed in this patient with Parkinson’s Disease with the incorporation of bodyweight supported treadmill training with traditional physical therapy treatment
