Discovery and Analysis of New Cocrystal Solid Forms of the Anti-HIV Drug: Emtricitabine

    Get PDF
Emtricitabine (trade name: Emtriva) is an anti-HIV prevention and treatment drug. Emtricitabine (EMT) is used along with Tenofovir to form the combination-drug, Truvada, which is extremely effective in the prevention and treatment of HIV. Emtricitabine works by inhibiting reverse transcriptase and is conventionally administered orally in a tablet. Only one solid form corresponding to the pure drug is currently known. Cocrystallization is a method of creating novel solid forms by combining two or more components. In this context, cocrystallization is a good strategy to generate new and enhanced solid forms of Emtricitabine. Through our work with Emtricitabine, we generated new cocrystals with bipyridines using mechanochemical techniques. The new solids were studied and characterized using X-ray diffraction techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction. We anticipate our work could lead to the design of improved solids of Emtricitabine that could be used in new administration routes of the drug

Unique health needs and characteristics of homeless women in Iowa City, Iowa

    Get PDF
Context: Homeless individuals have comparatively poorer health, however few gender specific assessments exist. Purpose: This cross-sectional survey of homeless individuals assesses gender-specific health needs. Procedure: 68 Homeless adults were surveyed at a shelter from March to April, 2015 in Iowa City, IA. Descriptive statistics were computed to compare gender-subgroup responses. Main Findings: The study population was predominately male (45, 67.2%), white (37, 54.4%), and averaged 42.35 years old (range 21-74). Males were more likely to be veterans (13, 28.9% vs. 1, 4.5%, p=0.025). Women were more likely to have dependents (9, 47.4% vs. 1, 4%, p=0.001) and access to dental coverage (16, 80% vs. 12, 30.8%, p=0.001). Similar rates of chronic disease, primary care access, and unmet health needs were noted. Conclusions: Homeless women and men have unique needs and would benefit from gender-specific health interventions. Resources for child-care may be important for women who are homeless, while dental health care may be particularly beneficial for men

Featured here is a rendering of Clara Johnson in her costume during Act 2 scene 5 & 6. She is wearing a silk peach dress, with a peach dotted swiss fabric on top. The dress features high neckline with a collar, with a sheer panel of the swiss dot in the décolletage area. While designing Clara’s costumes I aimed to keep them colorful and youthful, to show her light-hearted and free spirit. Most of her costumes complement her mother’s to show how her mother has a strong influence on her, however at this point in the play her costumes begin to contrast her mother’s, to show how she is stepping into her independence.https://ir.uiowa.edu/costume_design/1231/thumbnail.jp

The effect of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues on the preservation of ovarian function against cyclophosphamide-induced damage in adult mice

Objective: To assess the effect of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) on the preservation of ovarian function against cyclophosphamide-induced gonadal toxicity. Materials and Methods: In a controlled, experimental study, 64 female mice were divided into four groups: control (C), triptorelin acetate (T), cyclophosphamide (CY), and triptorelin plus cyclophosphamide (T+CY) groups. Mice in the group (T) were subcutaneously injected with GnRHa (triptorelin acetate) in a dose of 0.5 mg/kg daily for 21 days. In contrast, mice in the (CY) group and (T+CY) group were injected intraperitoneally with 75 mg/kg of CY on day 15. After 21 days, half of the mice in each group were sacrificed, and their ovaries were removed. The rest of the mice in each group were left without any intervention for an additional 21 days, and the same procedures were repeated to assess the ovarian follicles. Results: There was significant depletion of ovarian follicles in the CY group compared to the control group (p\u3c0.05). There were significant decreases in the number of secondary and antral follicles at late stage as compared to early stage in the CY group (p\u3c0.05). There was also a significant increase in the number of primordial and primary follicles in the T+CY group as compared with the CY group early post-treatment, while the increase was significant in all follicles after 42 days (p\u3c0.05). Conclusion: Cyclophosphamide destroys primordial and primary follicles at an early stage while damage in secondary and antral follicles was prominent after 42 days. Triptorelin acetate reduces the toxic effect of CY; it has early and late protective effects and preserves ovarian function in mice

Disparities in healthcare: a focus on Native American Women’s health and the system that is failing them

    Get PDF
Women’s health care has always been a hotbed for public attention. The upcoming presidential election and new state-level laws targeting reproductive rights have only brought these issues into greater prominence. While reproductive rights are an important topic on their own, we also need to talk about a subset of the greater issue that is often swept under the rug, to talk about women’s healthcare disparities on Native American reservations. Unless you live close to a reservation, you may have never thought to consider that a disparity even exists. Yet, as a female tribal member who has lived on the reservation most of my life, this issue is of paramount concern ethically, socially and morally
