Why Proper Technique Works: An Insight into Scientific Principles that Make Skating Possible

    Get PDF
As a figure skater and a premed student, I have found that my understanding of science and interest in the human body has helped me better understand certain aspects of the sport and recommendations by coaches. Recent advancements in figure skating have led to questions about the impacts of quadruple jumps on young female athletes. My project aimed at providing coaches with some science background about concepts related to figure skating and correct technique to not only help them with injury prevention, but also to help foster an interest in science in a unique population. After doing research and interviewing figure skating coaches and exercise science experts, I created a brochure, shown in the video, that highlighted key science topics related to figure skating. I planned to distribute this brochure to local ice rinks, but was unable to do so because of the COVID pandemic. I instead chose to electronically deliver the brochure using club email lists, and will distribute the brochure at a later time. I additionally created a blog post, shown in the video, that can be published on Stem-o-sphere that added some off-ice elements to my content since skaters were confined to this training during the pandemic

Opportunities for Scientific Information in Social Media

    Get PDF
Social media poses a unique opportunity for scientific information to be spread to a wide and diverse audience. The main goal of this project is to utilize social media to creatively address current issues, political statements, and other easily misconstrued topics. I accomplished this goal through the creation of two infographics, which addressed the Clean Water Act revisions and the impact of COVID-19 on the dairy industry. These two infographics are explained in further detail in one of the associated videos. A secondary goal of this project is to generate more engagement with the stemosphere social media pages. I developed creative content for Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to promote the Latham Fellows and their projects, a sampling of which is included as a slideshow video. The photos displayed with this project showcase some of the most noteworthy content I shared to stemosphere, parts of my creative process for infographic creation, and other organizational tools. My project narrative, accessible through the download button, further outlines the changes, hurdles, and successes I experienced throughout this project’s implementation

The Fall of Penn Central and the Rise of Conrail: Corporate Failure and the Politics of Deregulation and Nationalization in the 1970s

    Get PDF
This essay argues that the Penn Central merger was an ill-conceived idea that was doomed by larger economic factors, poor management, and outdated practices and regulations. Penn Central’s failure forced the government to step in to preserve the vital pieces of infrastructure contained within Penn Central. The government decided that nationalization, in the form of Conrail, was the best route to take because Penn Central could not be reorganized under bankruptcy protection. Conrail’s management, helped by railroad deregulation in the form of the Railroad Revitalization and Regulatory Reform Act and the Staggers Act, led the company to profitability and enabled its privatization. It ultimately helped to preserve railroads in the northeast United States. The story of Penn Central and Conrail serves as a case study in the process of American industrial decline, the transition from New Deal Keynesianism to Reaganite neoliberalism, deregulation and the changed relationship between government and business that accompanied it
