Dual trigger protocol is an effective IVF strategy in both normal and high responders without compromising pregnancy outcomes
To compare pregnancy outcomes between normal versus high responders after dual trigger of final oocyte maturation with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in fresh in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles, where ovarian stimulation was achieved by a flexible GnRH antagonist protocol
Primary radiation as initial management in endometrial cancer: investigating EBRT, IMRT and HDR brachytherapy
For patients with endometrial cancer at increased risk of perioperative morbidity, primary radiation therapy is an effective alternative treatment option. However, there has been no consensus on radiation technique and little data on outcomes. Our aim was to identify factors which determine patient selection for primary radiation, investigate treatment efficacy of radiation compared to surgical management of endometrial cancer and to evaluate different radiation modalities including external beam radiation therapy alone or with a boost of either high dose rate brachytherapy or intensity-modulated radiation therapy for differences in toxicities, recurrence-free interval, cancer-specific survival and overall survival
Adolescent Predictors of Binge Drinking in Adulthood: The Association with Psychiatric Disorders in Emerging Adulthood
This study investigates harsh parenting, parental drunkenness, deviant peers, adolescent alcohol use, academic performance, and emotional distress as experienced in adolescence on criteria for behavioral, substance use, affective, or anxiety disorders by age 23. This study also sought to understand how psychiatric disorders were associated with later binge drinking in adulthood (n = 501). Data come from a prospective 28-year longitudinal study of rural Midwestern families. Predictors at Time 1 were assessed in adolescence (15, 16, and 18 years old). Lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders was assessed in emerging adulthood (age 23), and binge drinking was self-reported at Time 3 (ages 27, 29, and 31). Results obtained from structure equation modeling and logistic regression using Mplus version 8 indicated deviant peers and low grade point average increased the likelihood of having met criteria for a behavioral disorder by age 23, while deviant peers and adolescent alcohol use increased the likelihood of having met criteria for a substance use disorder. Deviant peers and emotional distress in adolescence increased the likelihood for an affective disorder, while only emotional distress increased the likelihood for an anxiety disorder. Substance use disorder was associated with later binge drinking at ages 27-31. This study offers unique insight into how family, peer, and individual risk factors influence specific psychiatric disorders by age 23. Multiple informants provide a more complex understanding of how these risk factors influence later psychiatric diagnoses, as well as how externalizing disorders are associated with later binge drinking in adulthood
Investigating the Roles of Phonology and Orthography in Visual Word Recognition
The nature of visual word recognition, the process of identifying written words, involves a relatively unknown importance of the letters (orthography) vs. the sounds that those letters represent (phonology). Anadromes are a pair of words that have either the same phonemes or letters in reverse order, and they offer a unique way to study the nature of visual word recognition by allowing the transpositions of letters and sounds and measuring the resulting activation trends. The relative influences of phonology and orthography in visual recognition can be studied by using three types of anadromes: orthographic (flow, wolf), phonological (tube, boot), and both orthographic and phonological (pot, tube). In an eye-tracking experiment using the Visual World Paradigm (VWP), we assessed which types of anadromes were activated by highly skilled readers. A number of t-tests determined that phonological anadromes received significant activation, both orthographic and phonological anadromes were not significantly activated though they were trending in the right direction, and orthographic anadromes were not significantly activated. The results suggest that phonology serves a significant role in the process of visual word recognition and overlapping orthography may actually hinder activation, although there were a variety of limitations
Investigating the Nucleophosmin (Npm1) Protein in the Context of Protein Aggregation in the Budding Yeast S. cerevisiae
The Nucleophosmin (Npm1) protein is a nucleolar protein found in jawed vertebrates. It is primarily involved in ribosome biogenesis. Recent studies have proposed a new role for this protein as a protective agent colocalizing with cellular aggregates like firefly luciferase and the mutant huntingtin protein during stress conditions. In this study, the behavior of Npm1 was investigated in the budding yeast S. cerevisiae by fluorescence microscopy to see if Npm1 colocalizes or otherwise interacts with aggregates. I found that Npm1 redistributes to a subnuclear location after heat shock where it may colocalize with luciferase aggregates. HTTQ103, a mutant huntingtin protein, seems to interfere with this process. These experiments could be the first of many in the model organism S. cerevisiae investigating the behavior of Npm1 as it pertains to Huntington’s Disease and other cytopathologies, such as Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Light in the Piazza
Featured here is a rendering of Margaret Johnson in her costume during Act 1 scene 1 &2. She is wearing a pink tweed skirt suit. It has a peplum at the waist, a pencil skirt with a kick pleat in the back to allow for a larger range of movement. The suit is very structured to reinforce how structured Margaret’s lifestyle is.https://ir.uiowa.edu/costume_design/1232/thumbnail.jp
Hit the Wall
This photo features all of the cast members, in the orange and purple lights of the night time. The cast has shifted into their bar looks, which feature light colored fabrics and fabrics with a sheen, to emphasis the transformation the characters have from day to night.https://ir.uiowa.edu/costume_design/1124/thumbnail.jp
