    Authentic Leadership and Psychological Well-being of Nurses: A Mediated Moderation Model

    Aims. This study investigates how authentic leadership influences the psychological well-being of Australian nurses. We examined whether authentic leadership could reduce the prevalence of workplace incivility and tested whether shared values and person-organization (P-O) fit could moderate the relationship between workplace incivility and psychological well-being (PWB). A mediated moderation model underpinned by social learning theory was developed to test the influence of authentic leadership on PWB. Design. We adopted a descriptive correlational research design to test the hypothesized model with a cross-sectional sample of Australian nurses using an online survey. Data were collected across two-waves separated by a six-month interval (N=230, response rate 38.3%) to minimize the potential effects of common source bias. The hypotheses were tested using Hayes Process Macro (Model 14) on IBM SPSS. Results. Te hypothesized model had good fit indices and supported the mediated moderation model. There was no support for the direct association between authentic leadership and PWB. The supervisor authentic leadership behavior was negatively associated with workplace incivility and PWB. The association between incivility and PWB was positively associated with P-O fit. Nurses with high P-O fit reacted strongly to the positive effect of authentic leadership in reducing workplace incivility, such that they experienced higher levels of PWB. Conclusion. Authentic leadership behavior is important in the healthcare workplace. It reduces workplace incivility and improves PWB for nurses with high levels of congruence. Implications: our study suggests that senior management should deploy strategies through which frontline supervisors can learn and enact authentic leadership behaviors. They will then be better equipped to improve the PWB of their followers by minimizing the prevalence of workplace incivility. Impact: the study found a significant indirect relationship between authentic leadership behavior and psychological well-being, as mediated by workplace incivility and moderated by person-organization fit. The findings highlight the importance of positive leadership behaviors on the well-being outcomes of nurses in Australia

    Integrative genomic analysis of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia lacking a genetic biomarker in the UKALL2003 clinical trial

    Incorporating genetics into risk-stratification for treatment of childhood B-progenitor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL) has contributed significantly to improved survival. In about 30% B-ALL (B-other-ALL) without well-established chromosomal changes, new genetic subtypes have recently emerged, yet their true prognostic relevance largely remains unclear. We integrated next generation sequencing (NGS): whole genome sequencing (WGS) (n = 157) and bespoke targeted NGS (t-NGS) (n = 175) (overlap n = 36), with existing genetic annotation in a representative cohort of 351 B-other-ALL patients from the childhood ALL trail, UKALL2003. PAX5alt was most frequently observed (n = 91), whereas PAX5 P80R mutations (n = 11) defined a distinct PAX5 subtype. DUX4-r subtype (n = 80) was defined by DUX4 rearrangements and/or ERG deletions. These patients had a low relapse rate and excellent survival. ETV6::RUNX1-like subtype (n = 21) was characterised by multiple abnormalities of ETV6 and IKZF1, with no reported relapses or deaths, indicating their excellent prognosis in this trial. An inferior outcome for patients with ABL-class fusions (n = 25) was confirmed. Integration of NGS into genomic profiling of B-other-ALL within a single childhood ALL trial, UKALL2003, has shown the added clinical value of NGS-based approaches, through improved accuracy in detection and classification into the range of risk stratifying genetic subtypes, while validating their prognostic significance

    The anti-Jewish revolts of 1391 are traditionally blamed on the hateful preacher Ferrán Martínez. This narrative was promoted by the Chancellor of Castile, Pero López de Ayala (1332–1407), in the early passages of his chronicle of the child King Enrique III. However, López de Ayala’s Rimado de Palacio offers more insightful perspectives on these events. Read as a historical source, the Rimado adds nuance to the notion of the monarchy’s alliance with its Jewries, whilst unearthing courtly anxieties against Jewish power. Ayala blends the ingredients of mirrors of princes, contempt for the world, satire, mester de clerecía, and moralistic glosses of Patristic and Biblical matter, taking inspiration from classicism, Roman historiography and philosophy, Christian Scholasticism, and an incipient Spanish Humanism in the vernacular. Against the backdrop of 1391, López de Ayala’s work pre-empts an approach to political Judaism that will define the frictions of the fifteenth century

    A protocol for the evaluation of a wearable device for monitoring of symptoms, and cueing for the management of drooling, in people with Parkinson’s disease

    Drooling is a common symptom of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) experienced in up to 70% of people with PD (PwP). Drooling can be a major problem in PwP leading to adverse physical and psychosocial issues. Current medical treatments decrease the production of saliva, whereas the problem is due to decreased swallowing frequency, not over production of saliva. Such treatments are problematic as saliva is essential for good oral health. Therefore, non-invasive treatments options such as behavioural cueing methods are recommended. A wrist-worn device delivering haptic cueing has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment method to increase swallowing frequency and a socially acceptable solution for PwP. However, the device had limited functionality and was tested on a small sample size over a short period of usage. Further work is required to understand the real-world behaviours and usage of the intervention to understand the longer-term effects with a larger sample size. This research will deploy CueBand, a discrete and comfortable wrist-worn device designed to work with a smartphone application to support the real-world evaluation of haptic cueing for the management of drooling. We will recruit 3,000 PwP to wear the device day and night for the intervention period to gain a greater understanding of the effectiveness and acceptability of the technology within real-world use. Additionally, 300 PwP who self-identity as having an issue with drooling will be recruited into an intervention study to evaluate the effectiveness of the wrist-worn CueBand to deliver haptic cueing (3-weeks) compared with smartphone cueing methods (3-weeks). PwP will use our smartphone application to self-assess their drooling frequency, severity, and duration using visual analogue scales and through the completion of daily diaries. Semi-structured interviews to gain feedback about utility of CueBand will be conducted following participants completion of the intervention

    Implications of cryptocurrency energy usage on climate change

    This study investigates the environmental implications of cryptocurrency energy consumption on climate change. Using a spectrum of approaches, including Granger causality across quantiles, cross-quantilograms, and dynamic connectedness, we provide novel evidence on the nexus between Bitcoin mining and climate change. First, we find a significant Granger causality between carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the energy usage of Bitcoin that concentrates on the right-tail quantiles. Second, we show that the directional predictability from hash rate, blockchain size, and Bitcoin returns to Bitcoin electricity consumption is heterogeneous. We also discover significant directional predictability between the energy usage of Bitcoin mining and CO2 emissions. Third, the dynamic connectedness results show that hash rate transmits the most substantial net spillover effects to CO2 emissions and Bitcoin electricity consumption. Accordingly, hash rate exerts a major influence on Bitcoin electricity consumption and climate change. This study highlights the necessity of stimulating technological advances in developing energy-efficient decentralized finance consensus algorithms to transform the cryptocurrency market into a climate-friendly market. The results provide policy implications by emphasizing the importance of cryptocurrency ecosystem decarbonization in addressing environmental concerns

It is estimated that as much as 10% of the legal market for aircraft parts are counterfeits and the presence of these parts on commercial aircraft are more commonplace than many people realise.     The Dilemma of Saudi Arabian Homes in Riyadh

    The courtyard form of the traditional Arab house responded to both climate and the culture of its inhabitants. Islamic values, as well as socioeconomic factors, played crucial roles in the design. However, the mid-20th century marked the beginning of Saudi Arabia’s first rapid economic growth as a result of the discovery of oil; which dramatically increased the wealth and prosperity of the population, and resulted in new lifestyles. This period witnessed the introduction of the grid layout street pattern and the detached villa house. This type became the prevalent style in Saudi Arabia, the central province, and Riyadh in particular. While the traditional courtyard house more than satisfied cultural needs, increasingly it was viewed inappropriate for affluent 21st-century lifestyles. Yet this research confirmed that the villa style is creating fundamental problems for Saudi families. The theoretical framework is set in sustainability theory, and investigates the principles of home through human needs, place, and house. The methodology uses a survey strategy with questionnaires, interviews, and building analysis to determine which aspects of home are satisfied by each type. The dilemma is that Saudi families will not return to the courtyard type because it does not meet important requirements of status; whereas the villa type does not meet significant criteria such as privacy. The context is increasing climatic temperatures, which are making both types increasingly uncomfortable. This study highlights the need for a specific contemporary home style that would satisfy 21st-century aspirations, respect Islamic culture, and respond to changing climate

    Towards Understanding Change-Supportive Organisational Behaviours in China: An Investigation of the 2015 Chinese National Football Reform

    This paper investigates the influences of change recipients’ supportive behaviors toward the national reform in the Chinese football sector. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews (n = 29), which were conducted with change recipients from national and local football associations and commercial football clubs. Drawing on an integrated conceptual framework, the findings suggest that the change-supportive behaviors demonstrated by the change recipients were influenced and incentivised by managerial factors (i.e., management competency, communication channels, participation in decision-making, leaders’ commitment to change, and principal support); and contextual factors (i.e., an amenable football environment and the perceived political pressure to change). Three manifestations of change-supportive behaviors were identified: a) showing understanding of the change but pessimistic about the outcome; b) supporting the change and being willing to take risks; and c) supporting the change and actively seeking alternative solutions

    Social prescribing nomenclature, occupational therapy and the theory of Institutional Work: Creating, maintaining and disrupting medical dominance

    Social prescribing is a process of helping people to access non-medical activities and services which address health and wellbeing needs. The process is frequently (although not exclusively) initiated by primary health care professionals and often involves prescribing activities or initiatives provided by community and voluntary organizations. To occupational therapy, the links between activity, social-connectedness and health are clearly not new, although there are emerging international examples of social prescribing initiatives, and examples of newly developed roles, processes and funding opportunities, all of which are creating momentum behind the agenda. In this commentary, we draw upon the theory of Institutional Work to examine how the language of “prescription,” and the purposive action of policy-makers and practitioners, is shaping thinking and action in relation to activity and health. Arguably, this language has helped to translate the recommendation of activity to meet a range of health needs in to an accessible and implementable concept. However, it has also potentially contributed to positioning the concept within a medical model of health, upholding medical dominance, and leaving occupational therapy on the margins of the debate

    This work shows a CoCrFeMnNi0.8V high entropy alloy (HEA) with multiple length-scale hierarchical microstructure, obtained upon cooling at ∼ 62.5 K/s, consisting of a dominant globular sigma phase, FCC matrix and V-rich particles. The novel microstructure, never reported before for the CoCrFeMnNiV system, results in about a fourfold and sixfold increase of hardness and wear resistance, respectively, compared to that of CoCrFeMnNi alloy
