Evolution of Storm Surges over the Little Ice Age Indicated by Aeolian Sand Records on the Coast of the Beibu Gulf, China
The Wutou section, hereinafter referred to as "WTS", lies in Jiangping, Guangxi Province, China (21 degrees 32 ' 8.25 '' N, 108 degrees 06 ' 59.9 '' E; thickness of 246 cm) and consists of fluvial-lacustrine facies and dune sands of the Late Holocene. This study reconstructed the evolution of storm surges along the coast of the Beibu Gulf, Guangxi over the Little Ice Age, based on three accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS)-14C, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating ages, and the analyses of grain size and heavy minerals. The analysis results indicated that the storm sediments interspersed among aeolian sands, lagoon facies, and weak soil display a coarse mean grain size and poor sorting. The storm sediments also show high maturity of heavy minerals and low stability resulting from rapid accumulation due to storm surges originating from the land-facing side of the coastal dunes. Records of seven peak storm surge periods were recorded in the WTS over the past millennium and mainly occurred after 1400 AD, i.e., during the Little Ice Age. The peaks in storm surges, including the 14Paleostrom deposit (hereinafter referred to as "Pd") (1425-1470AD), 10Pd (1655-1690AD), 6Pd (1790-1820AD), and 4Pd (1850-1885AD) approximately corresponded with the periods of minimum sunspot activity, suggesting that the periods of storm surge peaks revealed by the WTS were probably regulated to a great extent by solar activity
Coral-Shaped TiO2-delta Decorated with Carbon Quantum Dots and Carbon Nanotubes for NO Removal
Coral-like TiO2-delta] microstructures with high surface area were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method, followed by thermal treatment in a N-2 atmosphere. The introduction of oxygen vacancies (OVs) to TiO2 significantly improved light absorption and inhibited the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Then, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were decorated on the surface of coral-like TiO2-delta microstructures. The CNTs could greatly improve the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers, while the N-CQDs could further extend light absorption to longer wavelengths, including the IR region. According to the results of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, the introduction of OVs to TiO2-delta and surface modification with CNTs and N-CQDs promoted the generation of O-center dot(2)- and (OH)-O-center dot active species. The formation of O-center dot(2)- and (OH)-O-center dot active species on the surface of TiO2-delta/CNTs/N-CQDs played an important role in the deep oxidation and selective conversion of NO into nitrate. Density functional theory calculations revealed the adsorption and reaction sites for H2O and O-2 separately in space over the surface of TiO2-delta CNTs/N-CQDs. Namely, the reaction sites of H2O and O-2 are on the surface of TiO2- delta and CNTs, respectively. The electron transfer from TiO2-delta to CNTs was further verified through the differential charge density. This study demonstrates a straightforward approach for designing full-spectrum-responsive photocatalysts with high efficiency, stability, and selectivity for NO removal
Concentrations, optical properties and sources of humic-like substances (HULIS) in fine particulate matter in Xi'an, Northwest China
Humic-like substances ( HULLS) are ubiquitous in the atmospheric environment, which affects both human health and climate. We present here the mass concentration and optical characteristics of HULIS isolated from aerosol samples collected in Xi'an, China. Both mass concentration and absorption coefficient (Abs (385)) of HULIS show clear seasonal differences, with the highest average in winter (3.91 mu gC m(-3) and 4.78 M m(-1), respectively) and the lowest in summer (0.65 mu gC m(-3) and 0.55 M m(-1), respectively). The sources of HULIS _C and light absorption of HUUS were analyzed by positive matrix factorization (PMF) and four major sources were resolved, including secondary formation, biomass burning, coal burning, and vehicle emission. Our results show that secondary formation (i.e., gas-to-particle conversion from e.g., photochemical oxidation) was the major contributor to both HULIS _C (50%) and light absorption (55%) of HULIS in summer, biomass burning and coal burning were major sources of HULIS_C (similar to 70%) and light absorption (similar to 80%) of HULIS in winter. It is worth noting that biomass burning and coal burning had higher contribution to HUUS light absorption (47% in spring, 37% in summer, 73% in fall, and 77% in winter) than their corresponding contribution to HUUS_C concentration (41% in spring, 37% in summer, 54% in fall, and 69% in winter). However, vehicle emission had lower contribution to HUUS light absorption (26% in spring, 8% in summer, 18% in fall, and 11% in winter) than to HUUS_C concentration (24% in spring, 13% in summer, 28% in fall, and 18% in winter). These results suggest that HULIS from biomass burning and coal burning have higher light absorption ability than from vehide emission. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Revealing DeNOx and DeVOC Reactions via the Study of the Surface and Bandstructure of ZnSn(OH)(6) Photocatalysts
Photocatalytic materials present a robust approach in tackling pollutants in the air. However, the involving reactions and their associated toxicity, those are important for practical implications, have not been sufficiently reported. Here, we synthesize ZnSn(OH)(6) and control its morphology by changing NaOH's dosage in a one-step hydrothermal growth. Combining results from density functional theory and experimentation, we initiatively show the roles of exposed facets, oxygen defects, metal terminated surface, and bandstructure of ZnSn(OH)(6). By carefully characterizing reactions during DeNOx and DeVOC processes, this work enables a comprehensive understanding of photocatalytic activity against pollution of nitric oxide and VOCs. Also, a new systematic calculation of the apparent DeNOx index is introduced for evaluating the total toxicity. The trapping experiments reveal a balance in the involvement of e(-), h(+), center dot OH radicals in the photocatalytic DeNOx and DeVOC. Thus, our findings would enable an important understanding of addressing air pollution using high-performance photocatalysts and proper evaluation of total toxicity. (C) 2021 Acta Materialia Inc. The Roles of N, S, and O in Molecular Absorption Features of Brown Carbon in PM2.5 in a Typical Semi-Arid Megacity in Northwestern China
Brown Carbon (BrC) absorbs light in wavelength of 300-400 nm, and BrC molecule (BrCM) is a fundamental component responsible for aerosol radiative forcing. In this study, Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) coupled with electrospray ionization (ESI) was used to determine methanol extracted BrCM in PM2.5 collected in Xi'an, China. The absorption of individual BrCM was quantified through partial least square regression (PLSR) method. Results showed that 77.5% and 91.8% of winter and summer BrCMs were weak absorptive. The top BrCMs were responsible for 60.4% and 84.6%, respectively, of the absorbances in summer and winter. The nitrogen (N)-containing organic molecules were identified to be critical components of light-absorbing matters in both of the two seasons, outlining the significance of N chromogenesis in BrC. The top BrCMs were more closely related to -(O)NO2 that originated from NO2 engaged reactions in winter, and to -NH that formed in NH3 reactions in summer. Sulfur (S)-containing functional groups were not chromophoric while sulfur dioxide (SO2) triggered N-containing and S-free BrCM formations under high nitrogen oxides (NOx) concentration levels and relative humidity (RH) in winter. Hypochromicity of oxygen (O) in BrC was discovered because of the photobleaching of oxidation and weak light-absorbing of highly oxidized molecules
Oxidative stress-inducing effects of various urban PM2.5 road dust on human lung epithelial cells among 10 Chinese megacities
PM2.5 Road dust samples were collected from 10 representative cities in southern and northern China for examination of chemical components and oxidative stress levels in A549 cells. Downtown road dust was abundance of heavy metals, EC and PAHs compared to nondowntown road dust. Source apportionment also revealed the relative higher contribution of vehicle emission to downtown (35.8%) than nondowntown road dust (25.5%). Consequently, downtown road dust induced much higher intracellular reactive oxidative species (ROS) levels than that from nondowntown (p < 0.05). This study highlights that the ROS-inducing capacity of road dust in China is lower at lower latitudes, which resulted in a significantly higher ROS-inducing capacity of road dust from northern cities than southern ones. Hotspot analysis demonstrated that heavy metals (i.e., Cr, Zn, Cu and Pb) in road dust were the most closely associated with ROS production in A549 cells. Vehicle emission and combustion emission in road dust were identified to be correlated with cellular ROS production. The findings highlight the ROS-inducing effect of PM2.5 road dust and also serve as a reference to make the targeted solutions for urban road dust pollution control, especially from a public health perspective
Aeolian dust dynamics in the Fergana Valley, Central Asia, since similar to 30 ka inferred from loess deposits
Knowledge of the interactions among atmospheric dynamics, dust emissions and climate system is essential to understand the physical mechanisms for the dust lifecycle, their role in loess formation as well as the predictions of future dust concentration. However, these issues still remain relatively poorly known in Central Asia (CA). The extensive loess deposits on the CA pediments provide a promising archive to explore atmospheric dust dynamics and climatic conditions in the past and their association with loess formation. This study investigates the granulometric and magnetic properties of a loess section (named Osh section) in the Fergana Valley, which provides a sensitive record of atmospheric dust dynamics since 30 ka based on radiometric (AMS C-14) dating. The frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility (chi(fd)) and the mean grain size are used to reconstruct the broad-scale effective moisture and summer atmospheric dynamics pattern in CA, respectively. The results show that the precession forcing exerts a huge influence on the wind-regime variabilities in CA, but with different physical processes under the impact of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheet (NHIS) before and after 15 ka. The origin of the sedimentation rate variations in the Osh loess is also linked to the NHIS-modulated changes of the atmospheric circulation patterns. Either the strengthened westerlies or the increased surface roughness from higher vegetation cover in loess-deposition areas have significantly accelerated the loess accumulation. As a result, these complicated influence factors of sedimentation rate change in the Osh loess section, especially during the Holocene epoch, may hamper accessibility of the authentic dust emission flux and atmospheric dust concentration in CA. Soil quality assessment in different dammed-valley farmlands in the hilly-gully mountain areas of the northern Loess Plateau, China
There are numerous valley farmlands on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), where suffers from low soil quality and high risk of soil salinization due to the shallow groundwater table and poor drainage system. Currently, research on the evolution processes and mechanisms of soil quality and salinization in these dammed-valley farmlands on the CLP is still inadequately understood. In this study, three kinds of dammed-valley farmlands in the hilly-gully areas of the northern CLP were selected, and the status of soil quality and the impact factors of soil salinization were examined. The dammed-valley farmlands include the new farmland created by the project of Gully Land Consolidation, the 60-a farmland created by sedimentation from check dam, and the 400-a farmland created by sedimentation from an ancient landslide-dammed lake. Results showed that (1) the newly created farmland had the lowest soil quality in terms of soil bulk density, porosity, soil organic carbon and total nitrogen among the three kinds of dammed-valley farmlands; (2) soil salinization occurred in the middle and upper reaches of the new and 60-a valley farmlands, whereas no soil salinization was found in the 400-a valley farmland; and (3) soil salinization and low soil nutrient were determined to be the two important factors that impacted the soil quality of the valley farmlands in the hilly-gully mountain areas of the CLP. We conclude that the dammed-valley farmlands on the CLP have a high risk of soil salinization due to the shallow groundwater table, alkalinity of the loessial soil and local landform feature, thus resulting in the low soil quality of the valley farmlands. Therefore, strengthening drainage and decreasing groundwater table are extremely important to improve the soil quality of the valley farmlands and guarantee the sustainable development of the valley agriculture on the CLP
Level, distribution and sources of plutonium in the northeast and north China
Concentrations of 239Pu and 240Pu in 163 surface soil samples and five soil cores collected from the northeast and north China were analyzed using the radiochemical separation combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurement. The average 240Pu/239Pu atomic ratios (0.185 +/- 0.018) for all surface soil samples indicated that the global fallout is the major source of plutonium in the studied region. The 239,240Pu concentrations of the surface soil ranged from 0.002 mBq/g to 4.82 mBq/g, lying in the range of the reported results in the areas with similar latitude, except for a few samples. The distribution of 239,240Pu in this region is controlled by the deposition of plutonium in the atmosphere and its preservation in the soil, which were affects by multifactors such as topography, climate, utilization of the land and vegetation coverage. The analytical results could be used as the baseline data for the assessment of the impact of nuclear activities in the past and the future
Global Isotopic Hydrograph Separation Research History and Trends: A Text Mining and Bibliometric Analysis Study
Scientific research into isotope hydrograph separation (IHS) has rapidly increased in recent years. However, there is a lack of systematic and quantitative research to explore how this field has evolved over time. In this study, the methods of text mining and bibliometric analysis were combined to address this shortcoming. The results showed that there were clear periodical characteristics in IHS studies between 1986 and 2019. High-frequency words, e.g., catchment, stable isotope, runoff, groundwater, precipitation, runoff generation, and soil, were the basic topics in IHS studies. Forest and glacier/snow were the main landscapes in this research field. 'Variation', 'spatial', and 'uncertainty' are hot issues for future research. Today, studies involving the geographical source, flow path, and transit/residence time of streamflow components have enhanced our understanding of the hydrological processes by using hydrometeorological measurements, water chemistry, and stable isotope approaches. In the future, new methods, such as path analysis and ensemble hydrograph separation, should be verified and used in more regions, especially in remote and mountainous areas. Additionally, the understanding of the role of surface water in streamflow components remains limited and should be deeply studied in the future
