Carbon, Water, and Energy Cycle Investigations Using a Common Global Data Set: The International Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Initiative 2

    No full text
Document provides a summary of the ISLSCP Initiative II data sets that were selected to develop, provide inputs to, or validate the results of the elements of a well-defined analysis framework including models and climate observations focused on quantifying how the Earth is changing and the consequences of those changes for life on Earth. The record consists of 52 data sets, with a common series in the 10 year period from 1985 to 1996

Height-Resolved Ozone information in the Troposphere and lower stratosphere from Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME)

    No full text
Measurements by ESA's Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) contain information about the vertical profile of ozone in addition to its total column. Height-resolved ozone distributions spanning the troposphere and stratosphere between 50N and 80S have been retrieved from two orbits of data crossing the east Pacific and north America on 11th January 1996. The height vs latitude cross-section over the E.Pacific is in broad agreement with the troposphere / lower stratosphere distribution calculated for January by a zonally-averaged (2-D) chemical-transport model. A large enhancement to tropospheric ozone is detected by GOME over southern California, which we assume to be due to local photochemical production. Support for the major features seen in the two GOME cross-sections is provided by intercomparison of retrieved profiles with 19 co-located ozonesondes. The standard deviation in fractional difference is <10% in the stratosphere and <30% in the troposphere, and the bias is <5% above 6km and -25% below 6km (possibly due to cloud contamination)

Institute of Physics, Environmental Physics Group newsletter (36), Spring 2007

    No full text
This file contains the newsletters of the Environmental Physics Group at the Institute of Physics. The fundamental aim of the Group is to promote physics within the context of the environmental sciences. In achieving this aim we provide a forum for the discussion of physics as it applies to the environment and encourage the development and application of physical methods to environmental research. The Group also encourages the education and training of physicists in the environmental sciences through meetings and contacts with educationalists at all levels. Because of the broad nature of environmental physics the Group is involved in co-operative meetings with other professional organisations with interests in the environment. These newsletters are an archive of our activities since the formation of the Group. For more information about the Environmental Physics Group, see http://www.iop.org/activity/groups/subject/env/index.htm
