A machine learning-based nuclear magnetic resonance profiling model to authenticate ’Jerez-Xérès-Sherry’ wines

    No full text
Traditionally, wine quality and certification have been assessed through sensory analysis by trained tasters. However, this method has the limitation of relying on highly specialized individuals who are typically trained to evaluate only specific types of products, such as those associated with a particular Denomination of Origin (D.O.), etc. While tasters can often identify instances of fraud, they are generally unable to pinpoint its origins or explain the mechanisms behind it. On the other hand, classical biochemistry has made significant progress in understanding various aspects of winemaking. However, it has yet to identify the specific metabolites responsible for the unique characteristics of wines, particularly those influenced by complex variables involving multiple compounds, such as geographical differences between regions or vineyards. The concept of the “Terroir fingerprint” has emerged as a novel approach to wine certification. The concept refers to the unique characteristics imparted to a wine by its geography, climate, and aging process. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technology plays a pivotal role in establishing this “Terroir fingerprint” because it enables precise identification, quantification, and differentiation of the compounds present in wine. NMR provides a highly reproducible and specific method for certification. This work introduces an innovative project that combines NMR technology with Artificial Intelligence to create a profiling model for certifying the authenticity and quality of ‘Jerez-Xérès-Sherry’ wines

A new method to measure damage progression in Homogeneous Low-Crested Structures with a low-cost 3D depth-sensor

Mechanical profilers are commonly used to measure damage to rubble mound breakwaters in small-scale physical tests. This study developed a non-intrusive methodology using low-cost 3D depth-sensors to measure damage progression in Homogeneous Low-Crested Structures (HLCS) with and without water in the wave flume. Although light refraction causes distortion in the presence of water, distorted scans are corrected with this new method using a Neural Network (NN) model. The new methodology is adequate to obtain undistorted profiles of emerged or submerged breakwaters and may be described in two steps: (1) a digital profiler algorithm, to describe the breakwater models in series of profiles in order to measure damage, and (2) a trained NN model, to correct the distortions caused by light refraction for the scans taken with water in the wave flume. The NN model to correct profiles requires two sets of scans, one in empty conditions and the other in submerged conditions; the two scans (dry-wet) can be easily obtained without disturbing the usual test programs. This is done by taking the scans at the beginning (dry and wet) and at the end (wet and dry) of each test series. By comparing profiles, the breakwater damage can be analysed after obtaining the series of undistorted profiles from the trained NN model and the distorted scans. To validate the method, a series of small-scale physical tests with Cubipod HLCS were carried out from no damage to severe damage, and then the estimations given by the trained NN models were compared with blind observations, taken from additional pairs of dry and wet scans. The good agreement between the observations and the estimations (R2 > 0.985, r > 0.993) showed that low-cost 3D depth-sensors may be used as non-intrusive methods for breakwater profiling, even when scanning is done with water in the wave flume or basin

Distributed equilibrium seeking in aggregative games: linear convergence under singular perturbations lens

    No full text
We present a fully-distributed algorithm for Nash equilibrium seeking in aggregative games over networks. The proposed scheme endows each agent with a gradient-based scheme equipped with a tracking mechanism to locally reconstruct the aggregative variable, which is not available to the agents. We show that our method falls into the framework of singularly perturbed systems, as it involves the interconnection between a fast subsystem - the global information reconstruction dynamics - with a slow one concerning the optimization of the local strategies. This perspective plays a key role in analyzing the scheme with a constant stepsize, and in proving its linear convergence to the Nash equilibrium in strongly monotone games with local constraints. By exploiting the flexibility of our aggregative variable definition (not necessarily the arithmetic average of the agents' strategy), we show the efficacy of our algorithm on a realistic voltage support case study for the smart grid

When people lose responsibility towards what surrounds us, thinking that everything belongs to us and we can use it as we please, we run the serious risk of wasting natural resources, we stop respecting and caring for nature and we consider that they are inexhaustible. To change this vision and to contemplate it again, with respect and care, taking into account that any action, no matter how small, favors or affects the detriment of Planet Earth, must be a priority issue in education. In this line we find the ecocentric vision, which considers that nature contains an inherent value, regardless of whether it is useful or not to the human being. The Sustainable Development Goals tend to bring the greatest number of people closer to this ecocentric vision in order to protect all humanity on equal terms, although it represents a huge challenge, because sometimes, it implies unlearning what has been learned, in many cases in an erroneous way. Today’s society is full of messages that contradict this vision of the world, the market economy is aimed at maximum profit and for this, advertising insists on increasing and less responsible consumption, and, in the technological field, this vision is expanded to the nth degree, making any innovation an “imperative” for users. Education must be the spearhead to change the situation, as UNESCO has been stating for decades, through the Reports on education and sustainable development, and which have been put into practice by some authors. The main objective of this contribution is to present a transversal training experience carried out at the University of Seville aimed at training future teachers and educators in skills related to the development of environmental awareness and the responsible use of ICT. The data from the initial evaluation underline that there is this training need and that there is a high interest on the part of the students in working on this topic. The conclusions provide evidence that it is desirable to continue advancing in this experience, although the effectiveness of the project is subject to the expansion of the teaching staff network and the level of involvement that they may assume.

Directive (EU) 2019/1023 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 20 june 2019, on preventive restructuring frameworks, on discharge of debt and disqualifications, and on measures to increase the efficiency of procedures concerning restructuring, insolvency and discharge of debt, aims at substantive harmonisation of the insolvency law of the Member States. In our country, this entails the amendment of the Texto Refundido de la Ley Concursal, which is currently being processed and is nearing completion. In particular, within that reform, the introduction of a regime on contracts in the pre-insolvency proceeding is significant, which brings forward the effects of the declaration of bankruptcy proceedings on contracts
