Review of literature
Finnhorse is the only horse breed developed in Finland and it’s hard to imagine Finland without Finnhorse. Without it so many things would have not happened; the fields would not have been cultivated, the forest would have been neglected, roads do not build, and taxes not paid. Due to the industrial revolution on agricultural field, Finnhorse was on the edge of extinction but is qualities as multipurpose horse have risen its status and restored its future.
The definition of Finnhorse is like a student that did well in school: It’s multifunctional, strong, agile, fast, durable, lively, reliable, alert, cooperative, honest and obedient. It is the fastest cold-blooded horse in the world with a record time of 1,20,4. Finnhorse can show it’s though nature in drafting test or get rewarded in high level dressage or show jumping competition.
According to the breed standard the Finnhorse is a 156 cm high, versatile all-round horse. It has many colors, but the main colors are chestnut, bay and black. The Finnhorse has often white markings on the face and the legs. It has elastic movements, good self-carriage and it’s of a fairly solid build. It has a reliable and obedient temperament; it is energetic and always tries its best. For the first stud books for the Finnhorse it was evaluated according to its appearance. Now a days Finnhorses conformation is important and we put more value to its performance and nature than before
Poisonous Plants in the Vet Practice in Germany
In my researches I focused on finding out about the poisonous plants present in Germany.
There has been no particular poisonous plant that only occurs in Germany - they all occur in other European countries as well.
I did not only find the most poisonous plants, but also those causing the most severe and most common poisonings divided into groups for cats, dogs and large animals which local vets both for small and large animals confirmed with their case histories
Selecting dairy cows for dry-off therapy by the somatic cell count
The objective of this study was to test new type of dry-off treatment by analysis of the
somatic cell count (SCC) before dry-off, in order to reduce the antibiotic use in dry cows.
Nowadays the prophylactic antibiotic treatment during the dry-period is widely spread,
to cure subclinical mastitis. This study shows, that the use of antibiotics can be reduced
for healthy cows during the dry-off. This study was carried out on a commercial dairy
farm in Hungary with 95 Holstein-Friesian cows. Before the cows were dried off, samples
from each quarter had been taken and used for bacterial analyses and somatic cell count.
The SCC was determined with a flouro-optical-counting system (Lactoscan SCC,
Milkotronic Ltd., Nova Zagora, Bulgaria). Based on the SCC results, each teat quarter
was assigned to one of two groups. Teats with a SSC above 200,000 cells/milliliter
received an antibiotic treatment (Ubrostar, Boehringer Ingelheim) and teat sealant
(OrbeSeal, Zoetis), all others received only teat sealant. Cows with 0 AB-treated quarters
were the NONE group, cows with both treated and not treated quarters were assigned to
the MIXED group, and those with all quarters treated were the ALL group. The presence
of blind teat quarters were also taken to account. An existing linear SCC scoring method
was also used (1 to 9). After parturition, new samples were taken (Day 3 to Day 5 post
partum).
Altogether 345 milk samples were taken both before dry-off and after calving. Of these
samples, 91 had a SCC lower than 200,000 cells/ml (NO-AB), with a median cell count
of 109,699 cells/ml, and 254 samples had a higher SCC (AB), 759,742 cells/ml on
average. Mean linear SCC scores were 3 and 6, respectively. Based on this, 49 cows
received AB in all quarters (ALL), 38 were in the MIXED group, and 8 received no AB
treatment (NONE). Bacterial growth was found in 229 quarters. After calving, the NOAB
and the AB teat quarters had significant difference in their median SCC-s (537,302

cells/ml and 210,660 cells/ml, respectively, P<0.05). Linear scores changed to 5 and 4.39,
respectively. Median SCC of the cow groups (ALL, MIXED, NONE) were 149,204
cells/ml, 576,766 cells/ml and 235,347 cells/ml, respectively. The difference between the
groups was also significant (P<0.05). The presence of a blind teat quarter had a negative
effect on the SCC (P<0.05). Bacterial growth decreased to 89 quarters, but it did not have
an effect on the SCC. After calving, 37.1% of the teat quarters received antibiotic
treatment for mastitis, and there was no significant difference between the dry-off
treatment groups (NO-AB: 38.46%, AB: 36.61%, P>0.05).
In high SCC herds selective dry-off treatment doesn’t increase the occurrence of mastitis
after calving, but it increases the SCC in the NO-AB group, though other factors (blind
teat quarter) also play a role. However, not using AB at dry-off can be more economically
beneficial in low SCC herds
Mast cells, food allergies and inflammatory bowel disease: a possible link to neoplasia
Relationships between food allergy and IBD are still to be discussed, persistent or repetitive exposure to allergens may result in chronic inflammatory status. In return, IgE-mediated food allergy is more frequent in patients having IBD, especially in children with ulcerative colitis. Concurrently, rats previously sensitised to precise antigen and exposed to audio-visual stress had excessive mast cell concentration and activity in small and large intestines. Besides, permanent stimulation of immune system through altered intestinal permeability to antigen passage would then result in larger formation and release of immunoglobulins and inflammatory mediators, enhancing the risks of developing hypersensitivity responses. Furthermore, mast cells are recruited and activated in both food allergic response and IBD. Aside from inducing tissue injury, chronic inflammation like seen in the case of food allergy and IBD, would favour mast cell mobilization as well as carcinogenesis. Here, mast cells and certain of their inflammatory mediators such as vascular endothelial growth factors and interleukins act on both angiogenesis and mast cell attraction necessary for tumour expansion and propagation. For instance dogs suffering from IBD may be predisposed to lymphosarcoma similarly to human Crohn’s disease and/or ulcerative colitis. On the other hand, allergooncology focused on reduced risks of skin cancer of atopic patients. As for colorectal cancer of dogs, patients with allergic conditions were found to be at lower risks for neoplasia. In fact, mast cells would participate in the immune defence against cancer formation through protective IgE pathways observed during allergic reactions and thrombosis formation in tumours due to heparin release. In parallel, significance of food allergies and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is growing in both human and veterinary medicines as their incidence increases in industrialised and developing countries. It appears to be linked to better health conditions and changes in consumption habit as seen in expanding pet food industry. However, despite animal comparative model research, investigations in food allergies in human are still confronting isotype specific response challenges specific to each species. Regarding IBD, its clear aetiology in small animal practice remains unknown but seems to share common features with human Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Better understanding of food allergies, IBD and their possible link to neoplastic transformation in dogs could throw the door wide open to future applications in human oncology
Heart Rate Variability of Polo Horses in Malta in Different Training Periods
HRV is a non-invasive way of measuring the autonomic regulation of the heart rate. It is
believed that with further research changes in HRV can be better understood, with the aim
of using HRV as a diagnostic tool for several medical and physiological conditions in the
same way as it is currently being used in humans. Further research is still required on how
different physiological and environmental factors may have an effect on HRV in the equine
species. The aim of the study was to assess how HR and HRV parameters respond to an
increase in exercise and training over an entire training season by investigating the effect
that exercise, training and over all increased fitness may have on Equine Polo athletes
A literature review
The goal of this thesis - ‘Canine TPLO – the advantage of one-hole TPLO’ is to examine and compare the different method of osteotomy technique for treating CCL rupture. The thesis is composed of 2 main parts: Part 1 review the written literature of the CCL rupture and its main characteristics, while part 2 discuss on the advantages of the ‘Locking vision’ TPLO plate
