    Studies on Babesia infection of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) shot in Hungary

    Red foxes have been recognized as potential reservoirs of several parasites and pathogens transmitted by arthropod vectors and a source of infection for all susceptible species sharing the same habitats, including dogs and humans (Dusher et al., 2015). Several studies have shown increasing prevalence of Babesia microti-like infections of red foxes in almost all European countries, suggesting that red foxes are the natural reservoirs of this pathogen (Baneth et al., 2015). Baneth et al. (2019) officially established and described a new species named as Babesia vulpes n. sp. among the Babesia microti-like spp. In Hungary, blood samples collected from red foxes in 2011 were screened by PCR for Babesia parasites (Farkas et al., 2015). Altogether 20% of the red foxes sampled were infected with piroplasms, and the positive samples sequenced were 100% identical to B. microti-like piroplasms isolated from foxes from Croatia or Italy. The aim of the present study was to screen more blood samples also collected in 2011 and to compare their partial 18S rRNA sequences to those parasites of domestic dogs and wild canids from other countries, especially with sequences of Babesia vulpes n. sp. recently described by Baneth et al. (2019). DNA was extracted from each blood sample and a conventional single step PCR was used to amplify a fragment of the 18S rRNA gene of piroplasms with primers BJ1 and BN2. PCR products were electrophoresed in agarose gel, stained and visualized under ultra-violet light. Altogether 85 red foxes out of 222 (38.3%; 95% CI: 31.9-44.7%) were found to be infected with piroplasms. The positive animals were shot in 17 of the 19 Hungarian counties, except Heves and Nógrád. The 18S RNA gene fragments from 37 positive foxes were sequenced and compared by BLAST. All of them were 99-100% identical to B. vulpes n. sp. This is the first time that infection of red foxes by B. vulpes n. sp was detected in Hungary. Further studies are needed to identify the tick vectors involved in its transmission, the mechanisms of transmission, its pathogenicity and whether or not it can be transmitted in between dogs and red foxes

    A Systematic Review of the Association of Fat Content of Food with Canine Acute Pancreatitis

    Knowledge about acute pancreatitis has increased recently in both medical and veterinary fields. Despite this expansion of knowledge, very few studies explore the treatment interventions in naturally occurring disease in dogs, which are largely extrapolated from experimental models or general critical care principles. General treatment principles involve replacing fluid losses, maintaining hydrostatic pressure, controlling nausea and providing pain relief. The premise for early feeding is to improve the health of the intestinal tract, as unhealthy enterocytes are thought to perpetuate systemic inflammation. The evidence for early interventional feeding is not supported by robust clinical trials to date, but in humans there is evidence that it reduces hospitalisation time and is well tolerated in dogs. This review summarises the fundamental aetiologies, basic diagnostics and general treatment strategies across the literature of both veterinary and human medical fields. Nutritional support plays a pivotal role in the clinical management of patients with acute pancreatitis, however evidence based principles for its management are still lacking, thus the current literature on the potential effects of low fat diets containing different amounts and types of fatty acids will also be discussed. In all, this thesis supports the new premise of enteral feeding of dogs with acute pancreatitis early in the course of disease with low fat diets that are rich in high quality fatty acids

    Control of immunoglobulin absorption using the oesophageal tube feeding method on a Hungarian dairy farm

    Failure of passive transfer in dairy calves has been linked to increased neonatal morbidity, mortality and long-term decreases in productivity. The aim of this study was to assess the control of immunoglobulin absorption on a Hungarian Holstein-Friesian dairy farm and compare it to studies from around the world. Newborn Holstein-Friesian heifer calves (n=235) were examined from the 1st January 2019 until the 31st May 2019. Calves were removed from the dams within 2h after birth and high-quality frozen colostrum (3 to 4 litres) after melting (38°C) was provided to the newborn calves by oesophageal tube connected with a plastic can by a calving assistant. Nine to 10 h after birth the calving assistant repeated colostrum feeding from a plastic bucket, which was repeated by a calf caregiver between 17 to 18 h after birth. Milk replacer was then fed from this point onwards, 2.5l twice daily. Blood samples were withdrawn from all calves between 24 and 72 h of life. The serum from these samples was used to assess immunoglobulin absorption by using a BRIX refractometer. Any animal with a BRIX% less than 7.8% was deemed to have failure of passive transfer. The highest recorded BRIX value was 11% with the lowest recorded value being 5.2%. The average BRIX value for the sample was 8.05% ± 0.08. Average BRIX% showed little variance between the months. Failure of passive transfer was recorded in 95 out of 235 samples (40.43%). Mortality status was also recorded for the period of the study with 5 out of 235 (2.12%) animals dying. Serum IgG levels were estimated using a formula devised by Quigley (2016) and showed that, 88 out of 235 (37.5%) of the sample group had failure of passive transfer defining failure of passive transfer as <10 g/dL. Thus, suggesting that the formula used was quite accurate in assessing serum IgG levels. We found the levels of failure of passive transfer very high when compared to other literature using similar feeding techniques, colostrum volumes and feeding times. We identified areas of our study that would need improving to reduce variables and improve accuracy in future studies

    Breeding Strategy and Health Status of the Icelandic Sheep Dog

    The Icelandic Sheepdog has been around since the time the first Nordic Settlers came to Iceland. The breed grew steadily until the 19th century when about 50% of the population was killed as an eradication measure against a recent tapeworm outbreak. Later in the 19th century an outbreak in the disease distemper almost eradicated the entire population of Icelandic Sheepdogs with a consequent population bottleneck. The current population of Icelandic Sheepdogs can be traced back to 36 founders. Out of these 80% of the genome of the current population has been traced back to only three founder animals

    Application of probiotics for the treatment of neonatal diarrhoea in piglets

    SUMMARY Background: The importance of twinning and stillbirth is increasing due to their potential effect on production, reproductive performance, and profitability in large dairy herds.Objectives: The aim of our study was to quantify the effect of twinning and stillbirth on the main reproductive parameters, and to estimate the resulting eco-nomic loss.Materials and Methods: The data of 3660 calvings that occurred on five large-scale Hungarian Holstein-Friesian farms in 2016 and 2017 were analysed. Informa-tion about twin calvings, stillbirths and uterine treatments were gathered. The main reproductive indices (i.e. calving to conception interval – CCI, services per conception – SPC, and first service conception risk – CR1) were calculated based on cow-level data. Statistical analyses were performed by using linear and logistic regression, and Dunnett-test. Losses due to calf revenue, open days and excess semen use were taken into account in the economic estimations (1 EUR = 320 HUF).Results and Discussion: Overall, twinning and stillbirth occurred in 4.1 and 6.9% of the calving events. Twinning was more likely, whereas stillbirth was less likely to occur in multiparous cows (odds ratio: 4.18 and 0.64, p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0015, respectively). Following twin calving, CCI and SPC were increased by 12.8 days and by 2.8, respectively, whereas CR1 was reduced by 7.1 percentage points. The estimated loss due to twinning amounted to 50.4 EUR/case. The analysed reproductive param-eters were not impaired after stillbirth. Although, the reduction of calf number and the excess semen usage led to 112.5 EUR estimated loss per stillbirth case, on aver-age. Moreover, both twinning and stillbirth were significantly (p < 0.0001) associated with retained placenta (odds ratio: 2.22 and 1.23). The occurrence of inflammatory uterine diseases was not affected by stillbirth, however, it was significantly (p < 0.0001) reduced by twinning
