This thesis explores Variational Inference methods for high-dimensional Bayesian learning. In Machine Learning, the Bayesian approach allows one to deal with epistemic uncertainty and provides and a better uncertainty quantification, which is necessary in many machine learning applications. However, Bayesian inference is often not feasible because the posterior distribution of the model parameters is generally untractable. Variational Inference (VI) allows to overcome this problem by approximating the posterior distribution with a simpler distribution called the variational distribution. In the first part of this thesis, we worked on the theoretical guarantees of Variational Inference. First, we studied VI when the Variational distribution is a Gaussian and in the overparameterized regime, i.e., when the models are high dimensional. Finally, we explore the Gaussian mixtures Variational distributions, as it is a more expressive distribution. We studied both the optimization error and the approximation error of this method. In the second part of the thesis, we studied the theoretical guarantees for contextual bandit problems using a Bayesian approach called Thompson Sampling. First, we explored the use of Variational Inference for Thompson Sampling algorithm. We notably showed that in the linear framework, this approach allows us to obtain the same theoretical guarantees as if we had access to the true posterior distribution. Finally, we consider a variant of Thompson Sampling called Feel-Good Thompson Sampling (FG-TS). This method allows to provide better theoretical guarantees than the classical algorithm. We then studied the use of a Monte Carlo Markov Chain method to approximate the posterior distribution. Specifically, we incorporated into FG-TS a Langevin Monte Carlo algorithm and a Metropolized Langevin Monte Carlo algorithm. Moreover, we obtained the same theoretical guarantees as for FG-TS when the posterior distribution is known.
Using a micro-device with a deformable ceiling to probe stiffness heterogeneities within 3D cell aggregates
International audienceRecent advances in the field of mechanobiology have led to the development of methods to characterise single-cell or monolayer mechanical properties and link them to their functional behaviour. However, there remains a strong need to establish this link for three-dimensional (3D) multicellular aggregates, which better mimic tissue function. Here we present a platform to actuate and observe many such aggregates within one deformable micro-device. The platform consists of a single polydimethylsiloxane piece cast on a 3D-printed mould and bonded to a glass slide or coverslip. It consists of a chamber containing cell spheroids, which is adjacent to air cavities that are fluidically independent. Controlling the air pressure in these air cavities leads to a vertical displacement of the chamber’s ceiling. The device can be used in static or dynamic modes over time scales of seconds to hours, with displacement amplitudes from a few µ m to several tens of microns. Further, we show how the compression protocols can be used to obtain measurements of stiffness heterogeneities within individual co-culture spheroids, by comparing image correlations of spheroids at different levels of compression with finite element simulations. The labelling of the cells and their cytoskeleton is combined with image correlation methods to relate the structure of the co-culture spheroid with its mechanical properties at different locations. The device is compatible with various microscopy techniques, including confocal microscopy, which can be used to observe the displacements and rearrangements of single cells and neighbourhoods within the aggregate. The complete experimental and imaging platform can now be used to provide multi-scale measurements that link single-cell behaviour with the global mechanical response of the aggregates
This Thesis presents the study of the production of two Z bosons (ZZ) and a Z boson in association with a Higgs boson (ZH) in the final state with two b quarks and two τ leptons (bbττ), using proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The dataset analysed corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1 collected during Run II (2016-2018) by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The non-resonant ZZ/ZH production, as predicted by the Standard Model (SM), is theoretically and experimentally well-established in high-resolution fully leptonic channels. Given the close similarity in the experimental signature, the SM ZZ/ZH processes in the bbττ channel serve as cross-validation for the strategy employed in the search of Higgs boson pair (HH) production in the same final state. The expected upper limits at 95% confidence level are found to be 1.8 and 3.6 times the SM predictions for the ZZ and ZH production cross section, respectively. The resonant ZZ/ZH search is motivated by numerous theories beyond the SM (BSM), predicting the existence of spin-0 or spin-1 high-mass particles possibly decaying into ZZ/ZH. Different mass hypotheses are investigated, ranging from 200 GeV to 4 TeV, and expected upper limits on the resonance cross section are extracted for each mass and spin assumption. The Run III (2022-2025) data-taking is currently underway and presents opportunities to improve the detection performance. The Level-1 (L1) trigger system plays a key role in the event detection, combining data from the CMS sub-detectors to perform a real-time selection of interesting events. This Thesis proposes an innovative Machine Learning (ML) method for the calibration of Layer-1 calorimeter Trigger Primitives, the basic constituents of L1 objects. The ML-based calibration provides enhancements in energy resolution and selection efficiency, offering a scalable solution to a wide range of calibration contexts. After Run III, the LHC will undergo a major upgrade towards the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), opening new horizons for discoveries and precision physics. In order to maintain its excellent performance, the CMS is planning a series of upgrades of the sub-detectors, including the replacement of the endcap calorimeters with the High-Granularity CALorimeter (HGCAL). This Thesis focuses on the HGCal Read-Out Chip (HGCROC3), the front-end chip designed to read-out the six million channels of the future HGCAL. Along with cutting-edge specifications in terms of noise, charge and time measurement, the HGCROC3 requires high radiation tolerance. Extensive characterisation and irradiation testing with X-rays, heavy ions, and protons demonstrated robust performance while also highlighting design vulnerabilities.

The Economic Penalty of Terrorism: Increase in Discrimination against Arabs and Muslims after Paris Attacks
International audienceWhat repercussions does Islamist terrorism have for Arab/Muslim minorities in targeted countries? We highlight consequences in the domain of online real estate rental. Using high-frequency data on all transactions happening on the largest Parisian online rental market over the period of November 2014 to March 2018, we are able to trace the evolution of prices and occupancy rates over time. We demonstrate that discrimination against properties hosted by Arab/Muslims rises swiftly in the aftermath of the terror attacks in November 2015 and wanes at a much slower pace. We quantify the average financial loss per listing that results from increased discrimination to equal $178 per month. Our findings not only highlight the presence of discrimination in peer-to-peer transactions but also show how sharing economy data measuring these transactions can be used as a “seismograph” to track and measure the development of discriminatory attitudes in response to societal events
Nucleation of nanodiamonds in H-atom rich microplasma
International audienceIn this study, the formation and properties of carbon nanostructures obtained from a low-pressure-low temperature microplasma operated with H/CH gas precursors were investigated. The study reveals gas phase nucleation of nanodiamonds among other phases of carbon such as graphite and amorphous carbon. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the signature of the nanostructures produced was insensitive to the nature of the substrate. The main conclusion of the paper is that nucleating of nanodiamonds is sustained by high densities of H-atoms at moderate gas temperatures and optimum concentrations of hydrocarbon radicals and molecules. High densities of hydrocarbons push the equilibrium towards sp and amorphous nanostructures even under high H-atom densities.</div
We first introduce new combinatorial objects called “matricubes”, a natural generalization of matroids. In the same way that matroids provide a combinatorial axiomatization of hyperplane arrangements in a vector space, matricubes abstract arrangements of flags. As for matroids, we provide cryptomorphic definitions of matricubes in terms of rank function, flats, circuits, and independent sets. We provide precise connections between matricubes and permutation arrays, and propose a description of matricubes in terms of local matroids. We then use matricubes to develop a purely combinatorial theory of limit linear series on metric graphs. This is based as well on the formalism of slope structures, which constrains the slopes of tropical meromorphic functions. We show that combinatorial linear series arise naturally by tropicalizing linear series on algebraic curves. We explore their topological properties and develop tools to study them. We provide a full classification of combinatorial linear series of rank one, showing that they are in one-to-one correspondence with harmonic morphisms from the graph to metric trees. This entails a smoothing theorem. Finally, we study tropical Weierstrass points, which are analogues, on tropical curves, of ramification points of line bundles on algebraic curves. The tropical Weierstrass locus of a divisor on a metric graph can be infinite. Nevertheless, we associate intrinsic weights to each of its connected components. We prove that the total weight of the tropical Weierstrass locus depends only on the degree of the divisor, its rank, and the genus of the tropical curve. Furthermore, in the case the metric graph is the tropicalization of an algebraic curve, we show, using combinatorial linear series, that our weights count the number of algebraic Weierstrass points which are tropicalized to each connected component of the tropical locus. In each of these contributions, we discuss multiple examples and ask open questions leading to other perspectives of research.
Temporally Resolved Type III Solar Radio Bursts in the Frequency Range 3–13 MHz
International audienceRadio observations from space allow to characterize solar radio bursts below the ionospheric cutoff, which are otherwise inaccessible, but suffer from low, insufficient temporal resolution. In this Letter we present novel, high-temporal resolution observations of type III solar radio bursts in the range 3–13 MHz. A dedicated configuration of the Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) High Frequency Receiver (HFR) on the Solar Orbiter mission, allowing for a temporal resolution as high as ∼0.07 s (up to 2 orders of magnitude better than any other spacecraft measurements), provides for the very first time resolved measurements of the typical decay time values in this frequency range. The comparison of data with different time resolutions and acquired at different radial distances indicates that discrepancies with decay time values provided in previous studies are only due to the insufficient time resolution not allowing to accurately characterize decay times in this frequency range. The statistical analysis on a large sample of ∼500 type III radio bursts shows a power low decay time trend with a spectral index of ‑0.75 ± 0.03 when the median values for each frequency are considered. When these results are combined with previous observations, referring to frequencies outside the considered range, a spectral index of ‑1.00 ± 0.01 is found in the range ∼0.05–300 MHz, compatible with the presence of radio-wave scattering between 1 and 100 R ☉
Addressing Bias in Online Selection with Limited Budget of Comparisons
International audienceConsider a hiring process with candidates coming from different universities. It is easy to order candidates with the same background, yet it can be challenging to compare them otherwise. The latter case requires additional costly assessments, leading to a potentially high total cost for the hiring organization.Given an assigned budget, what would be an optimal strategy to select the most qualified candidate? We model the above problem as a multicolor secretary problem, allowing comparisons between candidates from distinct groups at a fixed cost. Our study explores how the allocated budget enhances the success probability in such settings
